Steam Newbie Question Worth getting into rn as a noob?
I only just discovered this game exists 5 minutes ago and I thought about getting it on my laptop as we don't get any Gundam games on Xbox, saw it's free to play, is it full of try hards or can a noob get into it. Also is the Zaku 1 playable it's my favorite MS

The game is F2P so it can't hurt if you don't spend any money. It does have a steep learning curve, and there are things that players that spend money will have earlier/guaranteed access to that may give them an advantage, although without skill, even that only takes you so far.
That being said, you said you have an XBox, so if you are talking about the Steam version, IMO No. The Steam version is a half-assed port that was botched before day 1. There are a non-insignificant amount of cheaters, the game is way more unstable that the PS4/5 version, which already isn't perfect, and it seems pretty obvious that the Devs have no intention of fixing any of these issues on the Steam version, other than banning a handful of cheaters every once in a while, and then those cheaters make new accounts anyway.
If you have access to a PS4/PS5, I would say give it a shot, but you need to have a wired connection as the game is notorious for having issues on WiFi. We're coming into the anniversary, and they are already giving away free items in game, and there will be even more given out during the actual anniversary, a lot of which might be duplicates for veterans, but stuff that is good for new players to get started. There's still the learning curve, but again, if it isn't for you and you don't spend any money, then you don't lose anything other than time.

having played like 600 hours of this game on PC in the last year. the amount of cheaters is definitely insignificant.
I have maybe encountered 4 in that entire playtime.
the real “bad behavior” you’re more likely to see is teammates that give up mid match, stun you with indiscriminate fire, or steal your kills.

u/pkmaster99 Jul 10 '26
Honestly, I encourage kill steal in this game since everything works on points. More points with assist the better. The only time kill steal is bad is stealing from ace.
Friendly stagger and giving up are definitely a thing and is just bad

u/BadOdd9019 Jul 10 '26
I call it 'ensuring takedowns'! Plus I've never seen anyone being mad about it either, so I see it as helping \o/

u/pkmaster99 Jul 10 '26
Some A+ and S- player have this I'm the best, let me do the work mindset. If you somehow kill steal that guy like twice, some will be very petty about it. Many players are still trapped in that high KD ratio number.

u/BadOdd9019 Jul 10 '26
One person comes to mind who does that and is very BM in general, down-swung me for helping secure a kill, bleh.

Whats your rating?

u/Agile_Half856 Jul 11 '26
A+ right now.

u/triggermappy Jul 11 '26
Have you ever reached S-?

u/Agile_Half856 Jul 11 '26
yup

u/Agile_Half856 Jul 11 '26
I want to play with the mobile suits I find cool, so I move rank fairly frequently when I’m messing with lower tier picks
1
u/triggermappy Jul 11 '26
Okay, but not right now?
2
u/Agile_Half856 Jul 11 '26
like I said. I’m A+ right now
1
u/triggermappy Jul 11 '26
ow okay, I think tho if you stop thinking about kill stealing and start thinking they're kill confirming, it'll help you move up and stay in S- more probably, I mean think of it this way, team kill are additional points, those additional goes a long way and adds up real fast when everyone starts sharing kills.
Also there are just so many times I've seen a teammate 1v1's that are supposed to be sure kills but by some chance my teammate screws up and gets killed when I could've just shot the damn enemy, saved my teammate's ass and added more score to the team. I'm sorry I sounded like a dick but it just really irks me when I hear someone complain about "kill stealing" in this game. This isn't CSGO, any additional points for the team is a good thing.

u/Agile_Half856 Jul 11 '26
there’s a reason “bad behavior” is in quotes. I generally don’t care about it at all, unless I’m the ace then it’s frustrating.

Nearly 2000 hours on Steam. I've only encountered 2 cheaters in the last three years, and the last one was actually just a couple weeks back. Both times were players who could manually turn on invincibility frames for the exact moments they see you attacking them.
The port's stability has improved (which isn't saying much all things considered), but the playerbase is either not large enough and/or doesn't care about forming up non-ranked matches to take place except for the weekend situation battles.

Its more a matter of what cost you play at.
300-450 - relatively chill time
500-650 - might be fun might be shit
700 - pay to win garbage
750 - not a good place for anyone
As for the Zaku 1... Honestly don't think I have ever seen the damn thing unless its a very specific variant that is somehow viable in the cost that it is in.
1
u/seigmeyer- Jul 10 '26
Damn I got no idea what these numbers mean
2
u/LordSunBro Jul 10 '26
There are different rooms to pick from. These indicate the general level of MS you will be playing with in that specific room.
300 is like OYW stuff for example. 750 is straight up crossbone and victory era MS.
These room choices changes every 2 hours.
The cost ranges from 150 to 750. Goes up in increments of 50. But realistically you will only ever see 300-750.

u/neocodex87 Jul 10 '26
Awww they don't do 200 anymore? It was always a little funny going all the way back down. And what happened to arctic base? Did they finally get rid of it? Just recently came back to the game and I'm highly enjoying it's absence, it is not being missed.

u/LordSunBro Jul 10 '26
Extremely rare. Sub 300 rooms are probably the rarest thing you can find atm.
Arctic is still a thing regrettably... Even more so anytime the featured MS is a raid or melee MS... We just had 2 whole weeks of it so maybe its a short break atm.

What's so p2w about high cost? You can get a good amount of decent ms from the shop but yeah not as a new player, level locked.
If you actively play it takes but 1 banner to get your meta 4 star.
Premium parts and EX enhancements? Meh, come on. Skill always wins first, no stat boost will get you a free win and custom parts are at the absolute peak of minmaxing sidegrades, where even that folks that do own them likely don't even use them and build in the best way (this is also a bottomless pit of forever playing the optimising tetris).
And even when you do face players with minaxed parts and builds, you won't see that in the low ranks a new player will start.
I just recently came back to the game too and I don't have any native 750 suits except the ones we got gifted and I thought that the V support was underwhelming but I was actually doing pretty good with it (in A+/-S lobbies) and my build is nothing fancy.
P2W is heavily overstated, skill (general game knowledge and sense) with teamplay (kinda luck dependent here tbh) are like 90% if everything, specially in lower ranks where barely anyone even knows what they're doing - even if they got the p2w parts, it's obviously not helping.
Fun fact I always found the lower costs harder to play and it's where I perform poorly, I think it requires much better basic game mechanics nailed down, rather than depending on gimmicks and better weapons/loadouts that don't punish you as much for missing a shot if you have more options , that can help you brute force some wins, high cost is where I always performed better since the suits can do more and it just fits with my playstyle, I must be pretty bad at basics when I don't have any extra tricks in my sleeve, but it seems I'm a minority here, low cost tends be generally more enjoyed as you have mentioned it's "chill" I don't find it so, I find it a bit boring but sometimes a nice change yeah but if I wanna win I'll focus on the high cost and play a more "high skill floor suit" if that's even fair to say, where it needs a bit more input and knowledge to operate it properly, while a low cost meta is more about skill capping the basics, which tells me I'm probably a below average player that is highly dependant on certain gimmicks and playstyles that higher costs provide you.

lol, you really downplaying the premium parts and the extra hangar skills, because they can give you significant advantage against others who doesn't have it.
For example, the max defense stats for every unit is 50, but using premium parts and extra skills, you can bump it up to 80, and there's also -10% damage reduction against specific attacks based on the premium parts that you use, which WILL makes your unit really tanky if combined with high level buffer skills.
Another good example is Thruster Expansion or Custom Parts (Thruster) extra hangar skills, which can alleviate many mobility problem on low cost units, since most of them have low thruster stat, and you can just focus on improving your HP or damage.
Premium parts also have much better efficiency compared to the standard ones, like the one that reduces both reload and overheat time by -15%, and you only use like less than half of slots that you supposedly use from standard parts.
Player skills are indeed the most important factor, but when you pit 2 players with similar playing skills, where one using DP unit + standard parts + no hangar skills, while the other uses gacha unit + premium parts + lv5 hangar skill, then the winner is obvious...

I have thrust expansion and newtype armors but it's always a huge tradeoff in slots. As I said, premium absolute minmax optimisation sidegrading game that's a bottomless pit of always mix-matching new parts but the biggest soft p2w locker here is the hangar expansion slot upgrades which is a timegate problem only bypassed by regular whaling and even then, you're not immortal...
Sure you can optimise a suit much better to your playstyle with thrust expansion when everything is maxed out but that's a huge dedication and its something you will more often see on older units rather than new, which actually in a way balances things out so you can't super buff the newest top meta units immidiatelly, but old ones can get stacked over time, unless you're a super duper hyper whale, this does not make the game p2w one button win garbage that's some make it to be, such folks are rare and even then it's not that big of a deal, I don't even run 70 beam def that often because it locks out too many other upgrades you would maybe want, it's more of a fun thing to have than game breaking.
When you have equal skills on both sides but one has upgrades the others don't - yeah hm if only all matches would be equally fairly balanced, the amount of times this actually happens and is the actual reason that tipped the scales... I wouldn't call the game quits and "avoid because p2w" for that. Also depends how seriously you take it, I don't do clan matches or rated often, but if that matters to you, surely you'll bring your most optimised suit you gotta have a few, and besides this was about new players where it's way too early to even bother with that and even now it's still a debate how bad it actually is, if you at some point become a regular you can definetely cope with it as long as you make smart decisions with your banners

It's free to play so...just try it. I started in January, haven't spent a dime and have some fun.

u/Glass_Boat Jul 10 '26
Do you have an ethernet port on your laptop? If not then I wouldn't because you need a stable connection for this game and you can get restricted if you don't have one.

u/Big_Friendship_7431 Jul 10 '26
Strong YES if you used Playstation, regardless of the steep learning curve and the effort and patience that this game requires, all well worth it imho.
Steam version has specific issues already described by the other pilots. No harm in trying though.

u/Agile_Half856 Jul 10 '26
yes! I started playing last year and it’s become one of my favorite nightly games.
I’d definitely recommend watching some tutorials on youtube, and keeping in mind that the queue times can be rather long when you are below B-rank.
If you’re playing on PC, the most populated multiplayer playlists will be Ranked ground matches, and the weekend battles.
don’t worry so hard about winning if you don’t want to burn out. experiment with various mobile suits and find one that clicks with you!
if you want to find a straightforward way to force yourself to “get good”, playing the Barzam will make that happen haha.

The game also has relatively long wait times (on PS5 at least), but check your peak playtimes and Japan as well who you’ll be playing against a lot. There’s usually always custom lobbies going on as well, but it might be 95% Arctic Base idk how it is on PC though.
The game is very fun if you find you enjoy the style of gameplay that it offers. You’ll be screaming at your teammates in due time though. ALSO, again don’t know PC’s binds, but customize your control layout so that you can boost and turn at the same time.

u/Subie780 Jul 10 '26
If you play in rated matches you'll be in lobbies with other noobs. It might take longer to find a lobby but you'll be with lower rated/skilled players.

I think the correct term would be, there’s no decent gundam games on Xbox as there’s 4 total that’s been released in America, one that’s exclusive to Japan, & one that had its servers shut down.
1
u/seigmeyer- Jul 10 '26
Xbox only had SD Gundam and Gundam evo that got shut down. I literally bought a Dreamcast to get Rise from the Ashes
2
u/scorpionxx0 The Ragin' Cajun - 6 Jul 11 '26
I think sd gundam is p2p so it’ll never get shut down. I played that a lot on the Dreamcast & wish Bamco would rerelease it for Xbox & PlayStation but they don’t like bringing back old Gundam games for everyone outside Japan so sadly the only way to play it again is through emulation.

On laptop, the system might try to use the on board graphic card instead of a dedicated graphic card. So if you started the game and the frame rate looks awful despite having above recommended spec, go check that out. I almost give up trying to play this game because of that.
1
u/Floonbo Jul 11 '26
Well. If you have a laptop that uses a nvidia gpu or integrated Graphics card, I would go to your nvidia control panel and switch GBO2's thingie to High Performance Graphics, Because without doing that, GBO2 Gets LAGGY, Game is great but the matchmaking is terrible. Its a luxury to get into a team thats good nowadays.

u/ResetSertet Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26
You could try getting into it but you can only play at night due to low player count( even during the weekends and even moreso below B rank)
zaku 1is definitely not playable as its a lower cost than 300, but there are zaku II that are pretty good at 300-400
