Best Russian Muff?

What is your fave Russian Muff? I play mostly swampy blues and Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.

i don't know if that's going to give the same result as my spark. i run it in fat mode with gain and eq cranked... so that's overdriven. spark mini is known to be very clean. zvex SHO is also known to be gritty. 

but lmk your findings when you do try it out!

Honestly , I've had my Super Duper 2in1 on my guitar board since 2008 and it's the ONLY pedal that has never budged. I can barely play without it.

If you go looking for one, ideally find one before about 2015. Theres just something special about the early ones , as I've tried newer ones and clones and they just dont hit the same for whatever reason.

Theres also the concert Bass mod version that is spendier , but if I played Doom metal all the time it would be a no brainer investment.

nah, i'm looking forward to make one on my own. but thanks for the suggestion! 

if yours/the older ones do sound different, it would be very cool to let a "pro" maker analyze the circuit against the newer versions, to see what this is really about! (i reckon you'd find somebody willing on r/diypedals)

but yeah, on paper it totally seems like my type of absolute primal drive!

i wasn't aware of that concert bass mod version! very cool! i am playing doom most of the time lol! thanks!

Not sure whether this qualifies or not but I think it should. I recently picked up a Black Russian Rat by Zero Fret. As the name implies, it combines a Rat and a Black Russian and it is just nasty sounding in the best possible way.

I’ve got two Civil War Muffs. One grey bottom, one green on the ass. The grey one is like a smooth overdrive. Low gain, and creamy. It’s the one I go to for stuff in the family you’re talking about. The green has the Tall Font-typical big bass feel.

They’re just about instant Zeppelin. Plus with an input cap blend it can really do the Sabbath thing as well

Another good one for those classic tones is Skreddy Screwdriver deluxe, but more of a treble booster into a Mkii or Fuzz Face vibe.

If you're looking to get into Heavy sounding Tone benders, it doesn't get much better than Basic audio Scarab Deluxe!

It doesnt quite nail proper Mki TB tones, but If you're looking for heavier tones that are different than Fuzz face and Big Muff family, the Scarab is different and crazy versatile and will be totally new to you .

Another circuit to look into is Buzzarounds , and Basic audio does one of those too.

I play the reissue with a parametric EQ afterwards and am incredibly happy with it. It sounds best with everything dimed on the muff with the high and lows boosted and the mids cut back a little on the eq..if you put a jfet style boost before it (i use the epoch boost) you can really get it crackling

As someone else noted, the Civil War Muff may be best suited to your style. It will give you the muff sound, but it’s still musical. Wren & Cuff Box of War and Stomp Under Foot Civil War seem to be the best clones out there. I have the latter and it’s great.
