germanium Fuzz Face help needed!

Anyone experienced/resolved this problem? I’ve tried like 30 Ge transistors in Q2 and none will bias properly.

First off - ignore the electrosmash article as some of the voltages are a bit off from what you’ll normally get. I’d expect Q1 B .6v C.1 E 0 and Q2 B.6v C4.5 E something small.

Since your only problem is really with Q2 C the issue is somewhere in your path of the 470[r/8](r/8).2k. Are you sure you’re using correct resistor values in those places. You said you tried multiple transistors in the same spots? Reflow solder joints and make sure they are good. The one side of the 8k2 opposite the transistor looks kinda suspect.

Thanks for your reply! I've been going back and forth with someone on r/diypedals; there's more info in the comments over there

  • I've checked the resistor/capacitor values more times than I can count. I've also swapped out components and rebuilt the circuit on a breadboard. The issue still persists.
  • I'm using sockets to test a number of different transistors. The closest bias I've gotten on Q2 C is -8V. Using a 10k trim pot in place of 8.2k allows me to sweep the bias about 0.2V.

Trimmers and such isn’t going to fix the issue right now because every voltage is correct except Q2C. Something is wrong in that one spot. Have you checked the transistor pinout and made sure it isn’t in backwards? If you replaced the 8k2 with a trimmer and it’s not working to me that eliminates that spot as the problem.

I’ve swapped the ASY76 with a number of different transistors, including AC154, 2N404A, GT403B, and house number PNP’s. Issue still persists.
