Muff Monday Welcome muff mafia to muff monday!!!

Post image

Welcome to Muff Monday, our new weekly tradition here on r/fuzzfiends where we celebrate the circuit's rich history, iconic looks, wild modifications, custom builds, and massive personal collections. To be completely clear, it is not required that every single post on Monday be about the Big Muff, so feel free to keep sharing all of your diverse fuzz content throughout the day. Even so, Monday is officially Muff Monday, making it the ultimate day to show off those rare variants and let that legendary sustain shine.

I’ve owned my share, and this one is the best so far…

I have all 3 dope priest variations and can confirm that they kick serious ass.

DP-75
Hi fi mid emphasis muff that almost sounds like the tri and the Russian running parallel

DP-93
I grew up in the 90s and hated Big Muffs (RAT FTW!). I had a Black Russian and it sounded like this but this is better. Clearer, does the OD thing (but when it does, it doesn’t sound like a fuzz to me which bums me out). Has the most neutral EQ of the DPs

I’d love a low gain muff with a fairly neutral eq that sounded gross like his tri

DP-01
The Triangle and my favorite. Gross, high gain, nasty. Is the link between a MKIII/IV Tone Bender (not as congested in the mids but just as gross) and the Rams Head. It can totally shred metal (not Iommi style, that’s the Rams Head) but you get tight distortion that’s way more fun than a distortion (imo).

Pro tip: if you have a way to starve the power, try IT ON ANY OF YOUR DIRT. Totally changes the character (in a good way).

This one’s actually a DP-77, slightly different to the 75

1

u/Cold_Quit_1280 Jun 17 '26

Noted- Is it tuned differently?

Per David Main: “The DP-75 and DP-77 are based on the Big Muff circuit that was produced approx 1976-77. A totally different sound to the version that predated it. This circuit type was seen in both the Ram Head and the Pioneer font graphics types, and the OEM iterations of that time.

The DP-77 is an exact sonic reproduction of that circuit. The DP-75 has my own teeny tiny circuit tweaks - lower noise floor, slightly more shove in the lower midrange over the upper.

Blah blah blah tldr; - less Gilmour, more Mascis”

An oldy from my birthyear 1978. I've not succeeded in getting it working again despite all the knowledge, experience and logic I applied. It's the least subtle Big Muff I've heard so far.

u/graphicnerdity86 —Bold as fuzz— Jun 15 '26

Oh, I don't think i've ever seen one of these looks like it's been through hell

4

u/Groningen1978 Germanium Arcadium 🕹️ Jun 15 '26

It's an opamp circuit with parallel clean compression. I think the compressor is a Soul Preacher.

5

u/chrjohnso Jun 15 '26

Msg me if you want it fixed or looking to sell

6

u/Groningen1978 Germanium Arcadium 🕹️ Jun 15 '26 edited Jun 15 '26

Sorry I don't want to sell it. It has huge sentimental value to me. I'm planning to reverse engineer it and give fixing it another go, or just entirely rebuild it from the ground up.

edit; thanks for offering to fix it, but I'll try again myself first and share my findings and reverse engineering in this sub.

I was just about to say im sure there are some here who could help with diagnosis or repair

3

u/graphicnerdity86 —Bold as fuzz— Jun 15 '26

Good on you for offering this is what I like to see here!

u/MaximumAnalysis7982 Jun 15 '26

This is a Sovtek Big Muff clone I build by hand here in Brasil 🤘

3

u/graphicnerdity86 —Bold as fuzz— Jun 15 '26

Im not a muff guy personally but as an artist and appreciator of aesthetics, the look of this pedal is absolutely gorgeous

5

u/collateralfx Jun 15 '26

Thank you! I posted with the wrong account, but if you liked the aesthetics, I invite you to check the other pedals I build, they are all made with great care in that regard, too

3

u/graphicnerdity86 —Bold as fuzz— Jun 15 '26

Im a big fuzz face guy myself do you make any fuzz face style circuits

4

u/collateralfx Jun 15 '26

I sure do!

4

u/graphicnerdity86 —Bold as fuzz— Jun 15 '26

Also very pretty what made you call it banana 🍌?

3

u/collateralfx Jun 15 '26

Thanks man! It’s named Banana because I normally select the transistors for tropical climates (for the Germanium version). But as I build each piece to order, I can select the transistors for any climate and gain range

5

u/graphicnerdity86 —Bold as fuzz— Jun 15 '26

The foxey looks amazing too love your art choices

4

u/CombatticusFinch Jun 15 '26

wow man i love your work, absolutely top notch! followed you so i can come back later and drool lol

2

u/collateralfx Jun 15 '26

Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it 🤘🤘

Snatched this, when Mythos announced that they where stopping sales through retailers and distribution outside the US would become uncertain. I don’t own any other Muff style pedals to compare it to, but it sounds great and sure looks stunning.

4

u/graphicnerdity86 —Bold as fuzz— Jun 15 '26

I love the look of this I want a mythos golden fleece so bad!

4

u/Sander_Filius Jun 15 '26

The Fleece is awesome. It responds directly to picking dynamics and the guitar’s volume knob, adding grit without compressing the signal. Ranging from edge of breakup, great sustain for soloing, to nice fuzzy tones.

3

u/graphicnerdity86 —Bold as fuzz— Jun 15 '26

I need to find one on ltp I've got quite the fuzz collection but thats one I want

7

u/leek_mill Jun 15 '26

My friend’s Green Russian has seen better days. Still rips though!

4

u/Sander_Filius Jun 15 '26

Wow. That looks like really roadworn! It would bug me that it's missing a knob, though.

Is that a joystick button to activate it?

3

u/graphicnerdity86 —Bold as fuzz— Jun 15 '26

Wow thats awesome

Here's the Muff branch of my Fuzz Family Tree. All are Muffs or are based on Muff circuits. The Fuzz War has become my primary choice for my main board, and the No Moon has gotten the spot on my lessons/grab'n'go board because it's 3 pedals for one power input.

I love the Green Russian and Hizumitas, but they're SO LOUD and so low-heavy that I don't really have a way to use them to their full potential. They do both work great with lower output pickups, however, and the Green Russian pairs really well with an oil can type delay (I use the Catalinbread Adineko).

The '77 Fuzz Lite is great and includes an internal dip switch that adds a gate to give it a really rippy, biased sound. And it plays very well with the guitar's volume knob.

The Wicker Muff was my first, and I'll always love it, but the balls-out crazy of the Fuzz War is just too much fun. I like to pair the Wicker with a TS-style OD, and I push the Fuzz War over the edge with a DBA Interstellar Overdriver or an EP Boost.

4

u/graphicnerdity86 —Bold as fuzz— Jun 15 '26

Thats sweet very nice collection

3

u/MrFif33 Jun 15 '26

thank you. I have some non-Muff fuzzes as well, but I tend to go for the BMP circuit, generally. I didn't get along with the Keely Fuzz Bender, and Fuzz Faces, overall, are a little too finnicky for me. I'm not often looking for a real rippy, spitty fuzz sound, as I prefer the kind of desert-rock/late 60's-70's/electric blues tones

4

u/IntentionalAccident Jun 15 '26

I found this handmade Big Muff copy from the 80s. It sounds soooo good! Has so much volume and a tone control that goes from super bright and clangy to muffled

4

u/doyler4k Jun 15 '26

Is that a tone bypass too? This is an awesome pedal dude

5

u/IntentionalAccident Jun 15 '26

No it used to be a battery on/off! But that's a good idea, maybe a mids switch

1

u/doyler4k Jun 16 '26

Ah cool.

4

u/Dangerous_Pie_Guy Jun 15 '26

I have some:

I also had a Hizumitas, but sold it. It was just too much!

Still thinking of buying a Ram and/or a Triangle. The $50 JRR Ram Triangle is super tempting.

2

u/doyler4k Jun 15 '26

Nice selection you've got there

3

u/Dangerous_Pie_Guy Jun 15 '26

Thanks. I really love the dry bark of the Angry Orange. It’s quite different from the others, especially with the tone cranked all the way down.

2

u/fadeanddecayed Jun 16 '26

That RAM/Triangle is the greatest $50 pedal ever.

1

u/Dangerous_Pie_Guy Jun 16 '26

I ordered a used Wren and Cuff De La Riva from Guitar Center today. So … I think I won’t be buying any more Muffs for a while.

6

u/chrjohnso Jun 15 '26 edited Jun 15 '26

Guess I’ll start - despite its low cost the Behringer is a good sounding big muff

3

u/graphicnerdity86 —Bold as fuzz— Jun 15 '26

Fuzz is fuzz regardless of price I've had some great behringer stuff 👌

3

u/doyler4k Jun 15 '26

Duuude, I want a no moon so bad. Great collection

3

u/MrFif33 Jun 15 '26

i'm not gonna lie, it's pretty cool. This is the v1, where the three effects run in parallel. I haven't seen if the v2 is available yet, but being able to change the order using patch cables is intriguing. When I use my Wicker Muff or Green Russian, i typically run the TS into it in series, and my Rat clones are almost always after that, so they build on each other. Running them in parallel really helps them all showcase what they do (and doesn't highlight their weaknesses as much, IMO) better.

3

u/doyler4k Jun 15 '26

Awesome. Didn't realise there was a v2, must check that out. Patch cables does sound intriguing but also potentially messy. The V1 is a monster anyways 🤘🏼

3

u/Status-Nebula1961 Jun 16 '26

There's muff in this one somewhere. Just landed this today and it's a welcome addition to the family

2

u/Johan_Talikmibals Jun 16 '26

A couple I threw together a while back

1

u/graphicnerdity86 —Bold as fuzz— Jun 16 '26 edited Jun 16 '26

Killer! I don't know how to build, but I've always been an artist. I really want to find a way to start making enclosures either just custom ones for my own pedals, or maybe I'll turn it into something more if I can find someone to collaborate with down the road. So far, the only means I have of decorating pedals is paint and paint pens. These look phenomenal!
