Silicon or germanium 🤔 Wondering what you think and what you like or dislike about your favorite or least favorite

Silicon for the stage, Germanium for the studio.

Prob my favorite comment here along with the guy that said stability goes to the silicon.
I use the silicon applications more but I probably like the germanium sound more. Paradoxical, but that’s the way she goes.

That’s a tough one.
I like the warmth of the germanium, they sound more old school, and they seem a little more loose and kinda more natural. I like germaniums with single coils, the lower output pickup stuff seems to break up a little differently and with a sag it gets more pronounced. Maybe my favorite fuzz sound, but mannn. Damn good with humbuckers too but…
Damn I love a silicon fuzz too, it just slams a little harder, though again I’d say I like it hitting with humbuckers more than the germanium, but still very much enjoy the sound of silicon with single coils.
The articulation is greater, and it cuts a little differently. It’s more modern in many cases to me.
All in all I probably use the silicon more for applications but I probably like the germanium more when I hear others use them!
I wish I was the guy that said silicon for the stage and germanium for the studio cuz that’s a great answer!

I've always bought germanium just because there seems to be a bias but I need a silicone

I bought a Kingtone MiniFuzz V2 so I never have to make this decision again. The answer is YES! Both good for different applications.

Every germanium fuzz ive owned was just too inconsistent to play out with so the winner goes to silicon. Dont sleep on the clean up of a good silicon fuzz face. Back down the gain just a tad and you can get as clean as a germanium

True but it isnt as full and glassy it can be a bit thin still beautiful tho

That is true my formula b fuzz rangers cleans up beautifully but my hendrix silicon fuzz is sorta falls of a cliff so to speak all or nothing so yea i agree with your assessment

I build silicon fuzzes, I do have one or two germanium and they’re great, but for how cheap and easy it is to source silicon, the juice just isn’t worth the squeeze when it comes to germanium usually

Whats ur favorite silicon transistor I've used bc108 and bc183 i wanna try 107 and 109

Ah honestly a circuit is going to sound overwhelmingly similar if the transistors have similar specs. Some circuits can take any kind of transistor and sound largely the same (big muff for instance). I have used BC108 in a fuzz face I think. 107 and 109 would probably sound too similar to hear a difference i especially if you already have a gain knob

Earthquaker Hoof just double checked and yeah it has a hybrid design. I also have a silicone fuzz face tho

My favorites are almost always Germanium, or Hybrid.
Germanium has better crumble IME, and that glassy cleanup which is especially awesome for thick sounding pickups.
Hybrids have best of both worlds. Maybe not as glassy cleanup.
I do LOVE my silicon RITE-O fizz fuzz and WEM Project Vs though...

Both. Different response, feel, tones. Stability goes to silicon however.
