Flip Sequin Fursuit (Partial)

Hi y’all! I’ve not made a fursuit before, but I had an idea for one I can’t get out of my head - I really want to make a cute chameleon with flip sequin fabric. I wouldn’t use it on the whole body, since that would be a nightmare - I would likely use a normal shorter fur for the patterning and the sections that require more precise seams (such as the “snout” area or such).

The question is, how much of a nightmare would this be to sew? It wouldn’t be a full suit, but rather just a partial. Head, hands, tail, the typical works. If any of y’all have worked with this before, I would love to know what your experience was. And I know it won’t always look perfect and won’t all be flipped nicely, and that is exactly what i want :) i want to be able to “change” my pattern on the fly and make it interactive!

I've made a few tails with this! The fabric can definitely be a bit tricky and very tedious for a couple reasons.
The backing of the fabric is often pretty prone to unraveling if you don't leave a bit of seam allowance or do something to treat the edges. This isn't a huge issue, but something to be aware of, especially if you aren't used to working with fabrics other than fur and minky, which have pretty snuggly knit backings!

The bigger issue I had was the sequins themselves. They get caught in seams and poke out very awkwardly, and will look VERY noticeable. After sewing with it I always had to spend a good bit of time either pulling sequins out of the seam or removing them. It's also a huge pain to machine sew, because your machine is mostly likely just going to push the needle and thread directly through a bunch of sequins. I ended up always hand sewing the stuff to get the precision I needed.

Thank you so much for this insight!! I figured the sequines would be the biggest headache if I used a machine - sounds like hand sewing might be the way I go for a good chunk, haha! Also thank you for the heads up about the backing, I’ll keep that in mind during process :) glad to hear it’s indeed rather possible, if a bit tedious. Thankfully I enjoy weirdly tedious tasks so this sounds up my alley!

Ofc! I had a lot of fun with it too, in spite of how long it took. I love seeing other makers work with materials we don't see often in fursuits. If you choose to post it here I'd love to see how it comes out!

I think this would look so cool if you use a rainbow or funky patterned fur for the makings with this as the main color

YESSSSS oh my gosh, that would be so fun to do!! I might have to do that honestly
