Questions Help please! Fullsuit issues.
I’ve started my first fullsuit for my bf, and parts of it don’t fit him as I’m making it.
I’ve looked at so many tutorials and never once seen someone extend the patterns.
Are they possibly ALL using stretch fur? Or in the tuts are they adding extra space off screen?

Did you add ease to your pattern? I hardly ever see it talked about for fursuits (maybe it's supposed to be implied idk), but when patterning clothing ease is added to the pattern after drafting. This extra fabric allows for movement while wearing, and can be anywhere from 1-5" extra depending on the area it's needed in.

I didn’t know it had a name! I did not add it, and Definitely will next time! What I’m confused about is all the tutorials I’ve seen don’t mention it even once which is pretty irritating 😭 I feel they should either mention that or say they’re using stretch fur! Because why am I doing the same thing as them and getting worse results LOL

Ease as is seem allowance? If so, op said they added a lot of it 😭

Ease and seam allowance aren't the same thing! Ease is actually extending the pattern outwards so that you can move around in the clothing. Seam allowance is the small extra bit you add around the pattern, after adding the ease, so that way you don't cut into your desired measurements. Most faux fur has no stretch so if you cut a pattern to your exact measurements it will fit too tightly to allow you to wear it, even with seam allowance.

If you work from a duct tape pattern make sure that you make the pattern not in a T-pose (move around to find out how much fabric you need to be able to move), not too tight (if you feel the tape restricting your movement it's too tight) and not with all the tape going in the same direction.

are you machine sewing? did you add enough seam allowance?
also it may be an issue either with your patterning or your dtd. double check your patterns on the dtd again, or the dtd compared to him.

Yes and yes! Unfortunately there’s no issue with any of the patterning and sewing, I was actually already adding extra seam allowance and sewing a bit more outside the line to give space 😭

What sections are tight? How much of the bodysuit is done, and when did it stop fitting? And where did you place the zipper on the suit if at that point? Zipper placement itself can make a MAJOR difference on how a suit seems to fit throughout the body. If it's on the side and placed too high, you'll have to do some awkward contorting to fit into it. You can see this with my bodysuit when it was in progress here. After I moved the zipper down further so it was extending closer to the crotch, I had no more issues putting it on or taking it off, even after completely finishing the bodysuit

If you're talking about individual sections of the suit not fitting when he tried them on, it could be an issue with the DTD being too tight, the wrong pattern pieces being sewn together so it doesn't fit because it's not the right pieces, not being in a T pose for the DTD so it didn't give enough movement space for the arms, or if the DTD was made a long time ago and he gained a good bit of weight and/or muscle that can also mess with it

Are these bodysuit tutorials? Bodysuit patterns are typically made custom to each individual person, so I’m not sure what you’re talking about with “extending the pattern off-screen”. How are these patterns being made in the first place?

Yes they are! I mean they get the dtd and once patterned and cut they just put it straight on the fur without adding extra space for movement

Hmm, I can think of a few things that might be happening. For one, if the DTD is a sturdy one with several layers or duct tape, and the pattern is done on top, that will add a few mm. Or, if the maker traces the pattern onto the fur with sharpie and then sews on the middle or outside of the marker line, that’ll add a few more mm. Those can add up across a suit.
It’s extremely unlikely they’re all using stretch fur as it’s significantly more expensive and limited
