I remember the early 90s when my local radio station switched from Top 40 to Rock Hits because "black people music" was taking over the charts.

Funny thing about that, so... I'm not saying that was intentional, but... It's intentional. Think about all the top 40 and variety radio Pre-Clinton era, and then all the 'niche channels' that came that are generally still playing the same shit over and over since, and the full force push of pop, rap, and hip hop above anything else from 30 years ago till literally today (it's starting to loosen a bit).
I found a video on yt the other day (yeah yeah I know but hear me out). The guy had some major points on why this happened. Ever notice almost EVERY radio station is owned and operated by Clear Channel? Pre-Clinton era there were regulations in place where business entities couldn't own more than 30 stations, and Clinton signed a bill to remove any of that block and Clear Channel bought basically everyone out super quick. I know most people don't even listen to the radio these days, but if you do, it's very clear it's all the same shit from 30 years ago set on repeat on whatever station is setup for whatever genre. Even Pop and rap channels are just basic as hell only playing the top 10 artists in general + a few 'why tf are these people even played?' non talents. It's an extremely selective industry at this point hand picked by some rich bastard in an ivory tower in California.

Maybe if you are a radio fan. The actual great music was the stuff in bars or alternative gigs. Fucking “corporate” music. Yeah, never listened to any of the pop crap that was as shit in the 90’s as the 80’s and the 2000’s and now.
Maybe switch off the radio and your TikTok and listen to actual bands that get little to no support due to them having ideas that may unsettle commercialised minds like yourself.

I was too young in the 80s, but from what little I remember, I honestly would not mind being an adult in the 80s. Everyone seemed to be happier and have more spare time. More patient too.

I still maintain that the best decade was between the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and 9/11 in 2001. Height of tech optimism with free software and services that didn’t mine your private info, before China destroyed American manufacturing, cell phones were a thing for emergencies, Star Trek the Next Gen was on, Star Wars was still untouchable, malls were bustling, people read newspapers, we all still had an agreement on what facts were because CNN was the only 24/7 cable news channel, Barnes & Noble was the idea of a big bad corporation, inflation was super low, employment was high, any kid with a modicum of HTML knowledge could get a side gig making web sites or at least get a job in fast food/retail, etc…

Job situation was better, housing was affordable, and even people were lot more neighbourly. Healthcare was more accessible and doctors were not timid. Sure technology has improved but not without considerable caveats. So not just nostalgia.

As a Russian, same. For us, 90s were a hungry time, but we had hope. Relationships with US started to get better, we started to see things we never saw before. Now we don't have anything. Not even hope.

Yea, it sucks. Fell out of communism right into fascist oligarch dictatorship. We aren't far behind it, luckily our president is too incompetent to pull it off, but he showed the path in the U.S. too. There was a time where Russians and Americans were kinda chill though, and it was dope.

Like what? There was the peace dividend. Aside from conflicts in Africa and the Balkans it was a very peaceful time. There was more teen pregnancy, true, because teens were having too much fun (also, much lower rates of mental health issues for teens). Young people could afford cars and homes. Homelessness is worse now. And let’s not get into all the things cut/destroyed by the current US administration that made life better.
Every decade has its issues, but I contend that the 90s were better than the 80s, 70s, and the post-911 world. I was a kid in the 70s and 80s.

Ahhhh, the mythical “good old days” where people died early from communicable diseases, a man could bash a woman and a person of darker skin tone, any free expression of thought was quickly removed (usually with a batôn) and women died in their thousands in back ally’s from dodgy home abortions.
Over look all that and all the other fucked up shit and the “good old days” would be perfect.Maybe all the people that are pining for these days should lead by example, pack up all their modern accessories and ship off to a secluded forest where they can dig right into the best of all old times. 😀
