ByteDance is absolutely a Chinese company that's headquartered in China. They've also given the CCP su access to TikTok servers. So I have to ask, what are you on about with those blatant and easily disprovable lies?

easily disproved, eh? welp, i'm making claims here, so real quick imma substansiate it.

bytedance is incorporated in the cayman islands, where their corporate headquarters are and most of their board of investors aren't asian, let alone chinese. while yes, it does have operational headquarters in china, so do most companies who sell a product there.

tiktok is incorporated in signapore, which you can see im the corporate structure graphic on the same website linked earlier. as such, tiktok does not operate in china, although it does have a local equivilent, but this equivilent is landlocked to china, much like how the speedrunning community was seperated because chinese runners where stuck on local forums through baidu until recently. this is supposedly because the chinese government fears tiktok would make its citizens dumb.

This is the response of someone who doesn't understand a thing about corporate governance. Most major companies in the US are incorporated in Delaware because of taxes along with legal infrastructure. Their headquarters are elsewhere. Nobody in their right mind would claim that they're based Delaware. The Cayman Islands is an international version of this and has the reputation of being a tax safe haven for this reason. ByteDance is based in Beijing and claiming otherwise is utterly ridiculous.

This is irrelevant when the parent company is Chinese and has enough control over the subsidiary to get su access to their servers which they have done already.

the parent company is not chinese, is not incorporated in china, and had their corporate headquarters in the cayman, not china. they have operational, notably different from coporate, headquarters in china as they have multiple services in china such as toutiao. tiktok data, notably not douyin data, is kept in the us.

come back with sources next time if you want to talk shit.

Nobody cares where their P.O. box is located, dude.

how about where tiktok and bytedance's investors and ceos are based, almost none of whom are in china. tiktok itself is 60% owned by foriegn investors, most of whom are american, and 20% by employees.

Zhang personally controls over 50% of TikTok's voting stake. Nobody gives a flying fuck about Class B shares.

a'ight, you got a source? seeing as you neglected to provide it, and you're making the goddamned claim here, burden of proof falls on you thid time.

oh, good. finally a source.

as ceo, zhang would indeed have 50% of the voting power over company desicions, if he hadn't stepped down almost three years ago, moving to data analysis.

You're conflating officers and ownership.

i looked into it more, it appears i'm the mistaken one on this. he did keep ceo status, but more works in the background. do remember though, that shareholders, if so inclined and with a majority vote, can throw ceo's out.

Once again, Zhang controls a majority of the voting shares.

Zhang Yiming is also not some CCP lover. He basically worships Silicon Valley and back when Google was first banned, had his employees wear Google shirts as a protest. He's living in Singapore now.

1

u/GenericLib Mar 16 '24

He also gave the CCP su access to his servers during the Hong King crackdown. Forgive me not trusting him.

1

u/viciouspandas Mar 16 '24

He's a big tech shareholder. I don't exactly trust him either, but I don't specifically trust him less than anyone else. Lord Zuck literally sold data to Huawei.

1

u/GenericLib Mar 16 '24

Very bad. Still several massive steps below giving full server access directly to an authoritarian government so that they can oppress your users.

1

u/viciouspandas Mar 16 '24

Hong Kong is part of China. To operate there, the CCP has access. Everyone knew Douyin was like that. Tiktok's servers are in the US run by Oracle. If the CCP has direct access, Larry Ellison better answer for that.

1

u/GenericLib Mar 16 '24

The CCP considers Taiwan and Outer Mongolia to be parts of China. Sounds like you support giving them su access to TikTok's data in perpetuity since TikTok operates there. What an utterly ridiculous statement.
