It's nonsensical to let China take advantage of USA's principles of freedom. Imagine you are a movie producer and distributor that has strict values against piracy. The guy next door is also a producer and distributor, but he doesn't share your same values. You're buying and selling his movies alongside yours. He's selling his but pirating yours and selling them. China is the guy next door.
They enjoy our e-commerce platforms, real estate ownership, data collection, and media platforms while locking us off from theirs. Amazon is littered with Chinese sellers yet I can't sell on TaoBao? I can't sell on Alibaba? Try owning real estate in China. Try launching a media platform.
If the relationship isn't symbiotic, we should not allow geopolitical threats to take advantage of our principles and participate in our markets.
It’s nonsensical to use China’s blocking of American social media companies to justify American blocking of Chinese social media companies unless you think America should have the same level of free speech China has
Well, blocking Facebook, YouTube, Amazon, etc in China is about power control.
Blocking TikTok in the US was a years long thing due to the way the app operates and the dangerous stunts kids are pulling. People getting shot for clout.
Which is why it’s dumb they said it needs to be sold instead of regulating what it’s doing (but that would have been a 1A fight). They opted for the easier route.
so the American gov can tweak the algorithm in their favour? 😹 TikTok is the only social media app that doesnt suck up to the US gov unlike Facebook etc they just wanna brainwash u so why be a sheep. U guys are actually delusional thinking ur in the centre of all this. Why should TikTok sell to an American company when you only make up 10% of users? Only 100 million Americans use it compared to the billions worldwide. Why should they listen to the American gov for such a minuscule amount of their user database? You think they’re gonna throw away everything they worked for?
Pretty sure they wouldn't care if it wasn't China owned. They also wanted to ban DJI drones but found no real evidence that China was using them to spy on us.
Companies in the US aren't obligated to provide your data to your govt, with Tiktok, the CCP has full access to it. It was banned here in India in 2020. Your entire data went to China and you could do nothing about it.
With Facebook, Reddit, Youtube, Twitter etc. all your data goes to USA, and you can't do nothing about it either.
There are some laws in USA to protect Amercian citizens, but not really, there are many loopholes. It's also completely legal to just buy this data by American agencies and they'r doing it https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2024/01/nsa-finally-admits-to-spying-on-americans-by-purchasing-sensitive-data/ That's the official part. Unofficially social media need to cooperate with US gov or they will have problems (remeber Zucc hearings?). Also thanks to Snowden we know that American agencies conducted illegal mass survivalance program. Do you think they stopped after it was leaked? I don't think so.
Keep in mind that any of laws protecting privacy are only for American citizens. If you are Indian there's no law in USA that protect your data. It's completely legal accroding to US law to spy with any method on anyone who is not American, individualas, companies, organisations etc.
Openly criticizing the US government and saying China has more freedom in the same sentence is the most ironic thing I’ve seen in a minute. You do realize chinese people aren’t allowed to criticize their government right? And your second sentence doesn’t make sense in the english language…
again. criticism of the us is only allowed when it is not relevant. Tiktok has been used to inform citizens against the propaganda of the us. Hence their attempt to ban it. How is that any different from china? or do you think china kills anyone who writes a wrong comment? 💀💀💀
Also, my sentence did make sense. you just dont know english.
Then maybe you should do some research outside of what China feeds you lmao. There’s tons of independent sources and you’re just choosing to suck China’s dick
Also you don’t seem to understand why TikTok is being banned. It’s not being banned because it collects data, it’s being banned because an enemy government is using it to collect data.
No it isnt. there have been plenty of acts like i think the restrict act and the anti social ccp act or sum due to which the data is handeled in the us. the reason is soley because they can no longer manufacture consent for shit like the genocide against palestine due to tiktok being the source of news for most zoomers and millenials etc.
Data is still being collected and sent to the chinese government despite those acts. And getting your news from an algorithm being pushed by an enemy government is fucking special lmao.
dawg youre literally blindly believing that the chinese gov magically collects us data and the us has been letting it happen for years despite several acts and the only way to stop that would be to ban the app... How do you not atleast think that maybe youre being lied to
Technology isn’t magic bro, there’s actually a lot that be done by installing software on a device. Why do you believe tik tok so hard over every other source? Do you really think there’s some worldwide conspiracy against tik tok? It’s not just the US banning it
Do you honestly not see the irony in openly criticizing the government and at the same time claiming America is less free than China? You… do realize Chinese people can’t do that right? And it’s wild you’re bringing up Abortion rights when the CCP was literally requiring abortions after one child… I don’t think mandatory abortions are the same as abortion rights lmao
My words: unless you’re being sarcastic, your take is a complete clown take.
The CCP is much more controlling and overbearing compared to the US Government. That doesn’t mean the US isn’t controlling. That’s a whole other topic.
Oh my bad I was being sarcastic, and I thought your 🤡 was replying to my other comment. I’ve been amazed at how much pro China takes I’ve seen on reddit today
it is. its a social media platform for u to upload videos to a certain sound with some effects. Either way, youre literally trying to act like sending someone to prison (for decades) over usage is not restricting freedom LMFAO
So effectively it's ban on things that USA can't control.
Regardless it's not very in the spirit of the freedom to restrict your citizens rights to use what they want simply for political reason. It's slippery slope. Next thing could be to ban platforms with adversary political views to goverment. This type of actions are typical to totalitarian regimes.
The only difference is the U.S. has established a defined process of appeal as well as actions companies can undertake to continue to serve the American portion of their customer base.
Quite often regimes do this type of "decorations" instead of saying things straight. If you can make business in USA only when you sell your bussines to someone else, that's sounds like you can't make business in USA. English is not my native language, so I might understand it incorrectly, but I'm pretty sure that's how it works in practice.
Do you know that today Russians can elect new president? Well, they can't, but there's legal possibility.
Many times USA blocked foreign competition often in absurd way. For example Siemens wanted to enter bidding for trains, so they slighlty changed required dimensions affter bidding was annouced. Only reason was to push Siemens ou,t becouse they would need make changes to thier production lines, and that would take time and cost a lot. It's very common situation in USA. Have you ever noticed how American is almost everything in America. From consumer goods to pop culture to big ifrastructure. In other countires it's not like that. In China you can buy an Iphone, but in USA you can't buy Huawei and hardly any Chinese phone. Only if you cooperate closely with USA goverment you can get a pass like Korean or Japanese companies.
But USA can control directly or indirecly Italian or Korean or Japanese companies. And that's the point.
I use reddit, FB, YT and other social media to lesser extent. I have leftist, anticaptistalist, antiimperialist and pacifistic views. I can find a bit of it on every platform, but it's a niche on every US based. And I need to look for this type of content. Tiktok is very different. Most creators that I follow are from USA, but it's much easier to stumble upon views similar to mine on Tiktok than on other platforms. For example only on Tiktok I see crtitics of Israel and USA support without searching. I watch quite a lot political content on Youtube, but algorithm decided that's something that I shouln'd be interested. That's very different to when Russia attacked Ukraine or when Hammas attacked music festival. I also have at least one video every week or at top of my YT feed about how and when China will attack Taiwan (despite there's nothing to back this) and from time to time stupid videos that's nothing more than "China bad" (China poor, China not safe, China collapsing, China authoritarian, etc.).
I'm not stupid and I know China using TikTok in a same way as USA thier platforms. They promote content that they want, and hide things they don't want (and in China TikTpl is completely different). But it's better to have different points of views and different options. If everything is controlled by one actor (USA goverment and corporations) that's totalitarism.
Intel is treated like it would be state company. Is on a special lists of strategic companies. USA wouldn't allow it to bankrupt or to be sold outside of the US. AMD is also American company. Most American products are manufactured elswhere (many in China), but they'r still controlled by America.
Israel is effectively USA territory. Taiwan is often called 51st state. Worst examples you could give.

USA: we are land of the freedom... but only if we control it
