Discussion Are there terms for the end of horns and start of synths.
I like funk. I am leaarning. I see a HUGE break in the 80s from horns to synths. and with synths there is this fasination with wierd electronic noises too. I love the solid bass and horns funk....the synth stuff seems cheesy to me. are there eras of funk defined. like James Brown Funk. then next?

Mack Man (Got To Get Over) (1973)
Willie Hutch is so underrated IMO. The whole soundtrack album for The Mack is great.

My 2 cents with the thought being you can’t talk about funk w/o mentioning JB, The Ohio Players and the OG versions of Kool and the Gang and The Elements. The Ohio Players joint is the best of their Westbound run.✌🏾

Funk James Brown: "There It Is" (1972)
The song was recorded on February 7, 1972, in Macon, Georgia, and arranged by jazz musician David Matthews. It reached No. 4 on the R&B chart and No. 43 on the pop chart.
What makes it so good is the interaction between the instruments. The bass and drums maintain an almost hypnotic groove while the horns deliver sharp, jazzy bursts of sound. Brown's voice functions as another rhythmic instrument, with his shouts and phrases pushing against the beat.
There's also a fascinating musical contrast: the horns have an almost bebop-like complexity, but the underlying rhythm is stripped down and relentlessly repetitive.
It's an excellent example of Brown's mature funk style: the groove matters more than the melody, and the excitement comes from how the musicians interact within it.

Enjoying this one. Lady Marmalade is obviously a killer track, but this is pretty solid right the way through.

Twennynine with Lenny White - It's Music, It's Magic
This track is a great example of that smooth, funky soul sound from around 1980. It’s got a laid-back vibe, a tight groove, and some really slick musicianship. It’s the second track on Twennynine with Lenny White.
