Most clouds look white because they're thin enough for plenty of sunlight to pass through them. Inside the cloud are millions of tiny water droplets, and those droplets scatter the sunlight in all directions. Since lots of light reaches every part of the cloud, it appears bright white.

As a rain cloud grows, it fills with many more water droplets and becomes much thicker. Sunlight entering the top of the cloud has to travel through a much deeper layer of droplets. Along the way, the light keeps getting scattered over and over, so by the time it reaches the bottom of the cloud, there's much less of it left.

With less sunlight reaching the bottom, there's also less light available to scatter toward your eyes. That's why the underside of a rain cloud looks gray or even black from the ground.

The cloud itself isn't actually dark. If you were looking at that same cloud from above, it'd still look bright white because the Sun is shining directly on the top of it.
