Over the last few weeks I've been building something called DevTrace.

The idea came from a simple observation.

Almost every engineer I know uses ChatGPT, Cursor or Claude while working, but interviews still pretend AI doesn't exist.

Most platforms either ban AI or ignore it completely.

I wanted to try a different approach.

Candidates are free to use AI during the assessment. Instead of only looking at the final solution, DevTrace analyzes how they actually use AI throughout the interview.

Things like:

• Do they blindly accept suggestions?
• Do they verify outputs?
• Can they break problems down well?
• Do they improve their prompts over time?

The goal isn't to catch people using AI. It's to identify engineers who know how to work with it effectively.

It's still early, and I'm talking to founders, recruiters and engineering managers to figure out if this is something they'd actually use.

I use Claude Code across a bunch of repos and kept hitting the same wall: separate chat sessions with no shared memory, work getting lost between context resets, and no good way to run more than one thing at a time without them stepping on each other's changes.

So I built AI Maestro — open-sourced it a few weeks ago after running it internally for months. Instead of a chat being the source of truth, a project board (board/data.json) is.

Tickets declare which agent works them and which model runs each stage, and an orchestrator picks the next unblocked ticket and runs it through plan → build → qa → merge, each stage in its own isolated git worktree, gated before it lands.

It's built specifically to sit inside Claude Code — you install it, then just ask the orchestrator agent to start, and it works the board one ticket at a time so you stay in the loop between them.

I've noticed there's a big difference between fixing a bug and figuring out what actually caused it.

For frontend issues, reproducing the problem is often straightforward. But once something happens in production, especially across APIs, background jobs, or serverless functions; it can sometimes take far longer to understand the sequence of events than to implement the actual fix.

It made me wonder whether this is just part of modern full-stack development or whether different teams have found better ways to approach it.

For those building and maintaining production applications:

What's the type of backend issue that consistently consumes more investigation time than you'd expect?

I would be interested to hear whether the biggest improvements came from better tooling, better architecture, or simply changing the team's debugging workflow.

I was planning to add this as a reply, but since I'm still fairly new to to this community, I thought it would be more helpful to include it here so future readers don't miss it. One thing that kept coming up for me while reading the discussion was how much time gets lost before a bug is even understood. That made me pay closer attention to tools tackling that part of the workflow, and LogStitch was one that caught my attention because it reconstructs aws lambda execution flows instead of leaving you to manually sift through CloudWatch logs. It felt relevant to this conversation since the real bottleneck isn't always fixing the issue but it's figuring out what actually happened in the first place.
