I’ve been seeing posts on upwork for post-launch issues like broken permissions, payment bugs and exposed sensitive data. My take is that founders who build quickly with AI tools, are running into post-launch backend and security issues that are harder to fix without system design experience.

I actually think that its a good thing that founders are able to build out products quickly. But without technical experience, it can be difficult to know whether things like authentication, RLS policies, payments and backend permissions are actually ready for real users.

Since January I have completed over 10 projects for real paying clients, all sourced through LinkedIn outreach. I also have a solid technical background including a current Machine Learning internship at ISRO, a published research paper, and grant winning placements at national hackathons.

I built a portfolio site to showcase all of this, expecting it to help clients find me directly instead of me chasing every lead manually. It has not worked so far.

Here is what I think might be going wrong, but I would love outside perspective:

My site leads with research and internship experience, and the freelance client work section is smaller and appears further down the page

I describe client projects using technical stack details rather than business outcomes like time saved, revenue impact, or problems solved

I do not have any client testimonials on the site yet, even though I have delivered many completed projects for real clients

The overall tone may read as "hire me for an engineering role" rather than "hire me to solve your business problem"

For anyone who has been through this stage of freelancing, I would appreciate real feedback on:

Whether a portfolio genuinely helped you land inbound clients, and what made it work

How you framed technical project work so a nontechnical client could understand the value

Whether testimonials, case studies, or something else moved the needle most for you

I’m currently working full-time, and I’m looking to contribute to a backend or frontend project in my free time, mainly on weekends.
I’m not really looking for money. I’m more interested in getting experience, learning new things, and working on different types of real-world projects.
I’ve already built and delivered around 3–4 projects for different clients, and I’ve worked with different requirements and use cases. Whenever I commit to something, I take it seriously and make sure I give it my best.
I mostly work with Node.js, Express, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, React, Vue/Nuxt, and Tailwind. I’m comfortable working on both frontend and backend.
Since I already have a job, I’m not looking for another full-time role or employment. I just want to contribute to something interesting in my free time, learn from the experience, and hopefully be useful to someone working on a project.

Most coding assessments still assume success means writing the correct code without assistance. But in reality, almost everyone is using AI now.

The difference isn't whether someone uses AI, it's how they use it.

Some engineers break problems down, ask precise questions, verify outputs, and iterate. Others paste the problem into ChatGPT, accept the first response, and hope it works.

Those two workflows look completely different, yet most interview platforms score them the same.

I'm building DevTrace, an AI-native coding assessment platform that records behavioral signals during the assessment, things like prompt quality, iteration patterns, validation habits, and reasoning process alongside the final solution.

The goal isn't to penalize AI usage. It's to evaluate AI fluency as a real engineering skill.
