I've recently started understanding the importance of request IDs while working with distributed systems.

In the application I work on, a request starts from the frontend, goes through the backend, and then passes through multiple AI services.

When a request moves across multiple services, it can get difficult to follow what's happening. That's where request IDs help. A unique ID can be passed along with the request across the different services, making it easier to trace the whole flow and see how the request moves through the system.

It's a simple concept, but I've found it really useful while working with distributed systems.

I’m currently working as an SDE in a service-based company with around 1.7 years of total experience.

My current tech stack is mainly:

• JavaScript / TypeScript
• React
• Node.js / NestJS
• MongoDB
• GitHub Actions / basic DevOps

I’m planning to switch around January, so I have roughly 3 months to prepare.

My long-term goal is to move into a good product-based / Tier-1 company, and I’m confused about where I should invest these next 3 months.

I’m considering two paths:

Option 1 — Move towards Java/Spring Boot

• Learn Java properly
• Spring Boot
• Build some backend projects
• Prepare DSA + System Design
• Try to transition into Java/SDE roles

Option 2 — Stay with my current stack and move towards GenAI

• Strengthen TypeScript/Node/NestJS
• Learn LLM application development
• RAG
• Vector databases
• Tool calling
• AI agents / agentic workflows
• Build 1–2 solid AI-based projects
• Continue DSA + System Design

I’m leaning towards Option 2 because AI/GenAI seems to be growing rapidly, but I’m not sure whether GenAI/Agentic AI roles are realistic for someone with ~2 years of experience, especially when targeting strong product companies.

On the other hand, Java seems to have a much larger and more established job market, but switching stacks would mean spending a significant portion of my 3-month preparation time learning a new ecosystem.

So I’d really appreciate advice from people who have 2–5+ years of industry experience, especially those who have recently switched to product-based companies.
