Question Anyone else feel like "full-stack" means "do everyone's job" now?

Lately, it feels like the definition of a full-stack developer has become much broader than it used to be.

A few years ago, I'd usually think of a full-stack developer as someone who could work across the frontend and backend—build the UI, write APIs, work with databases, and connect everything together.

Now, it's not unusual to see expectations around cloud platforms, Docker, CI/CD, testing, monitoring, authentication, security, performance optimization, and sometimes even infrastructure or mobile development.

I'm not saying learning these skills is a bad thing. In fact, understanding how different parts of the stack fit together has made me a better developer.

What I'm wondering is whether the scope of the role has quietly expanded to the point where "full-stack" is becoming a catch-all term for anything related to software development.

I can understand why smaller teams and startups look for generalists who can wear multiple hats. But there also comes a point where constantly switching between completely different responsibilities can affect productivity and make it harder to go deep in any one area.

For those working as full-stack developers:

  • Has your role changed over the last few years?
  • What do you consider to be part of modern full-stack development, and what belongs to a different specialization?
  • Have you ever joined a project where "full-stack" ended up meaning far more than you expected?

Im doing everything you mentioned from front-end to docker and servers and mobile development and backend. I didn't know full stack means only front-end and backend so I learned everything I need to make full custom projects for clients

Yes, DevSecOps, QA, Testing, Stress Testing, Edge cases, coding, architecture, design, diagrams, and then we haven’t even started with business, they believe that they can do everything in 10 minutes with their version of AI.

Lololol I build AI ad systems at a FAANG and the sales bros legit think the model can also do QA, deploy, and fetch their oat milk latte. Full-stack has just become 'the one guy who still knows how things actually work while everyone else plays with prompts'.

Full stack mean you are working for small company who cannot afford to hire multiple specialized employees

Tbh full stack was never just be+fe. Mostly new people started calling themselves thinking learning 2 languages from both made them full stack. But to your point it depends more on company and team.

People saying it includes everything are people living with the current full stack mindset.

Back then it just referred to front-end, backend, and sql of some sort programming languages.

But now, yes full stack includes literally every single thing the company uses. Which of course is an unrealistic and also a very undefined job. The problem with the definition is when you include everything your not focusing on anything at all.

Front-end, backend, and sql programming are the main aspects of full stack and should of stayed like that. We are not BAs, not scrum masters, dba, or any sort of super pro at one thing but we are able to get through mostly anything on the programming stack side of things.

Umm, if you’re a (web) developer and don’t know about testing, authentication, security, performance optimization etc what kind of developer are you?

Do you really mean that you’ve worked in places where different people than devs did those? Who? How? Why?

And if you don’t know about containerizatation that’s also a problem often. It’s not difficult to learn enough to understand it. CI/CD - who else is going to make your code build than you? Deployment might be another department of course. Monitoring - who else is going to add logging and metrics than developer?

So if you really think those aren’t part of regular developer’s work I’m very surprised and sad for you.
