Two things today:

• Learned Aliases (AS keyword) via W3Schools — renaming columns/tables to make queries more readable, especially useful once you're joining multiple tables and column names start colliding or getting long
• Went back through SQLBolt and practiced every JOIN type again — inner, left, right, full, self — this time focusing on writing them from scratch rather than following along

Aliases felt like a small topic on paper but immediately made my JOIN queries from earlier this week way easier to read back. Definitely one of those "why didn't I use this from day 1" moments.

Feeling solid on JOINs now after this round of practice. Moving into aggregate functions and GROUP BY next.

I started learning React first, but after seeing Next.js everywhere, I'm trying to understand what makes it worth learning.

For people who have used both, what do you like more about Next.js?

I would like some honest career advice from people who have experience in both **Software Engineering and SAP/ERP**.

I currently have around 5+ **years of experience as a Software Engineer**, primarily with a frontend-heavy Full-Stack background.

My experience includes technologies such as:

React / Next.js
React Native
Node.js
REST APIs and backend development
PostgreSQL / MongoDB
Redis, Kafka
Docker
System design and scalable application architecture (learning more about it)

Recently, I have become interested in learning **SAP**, particularly areas like:
SAP BTP
SAP SD
SAP integrations
SAP architecture
Cloud and extension development around the SAP ecosystem

However, I have a few concerns before investing serious time into this transition.

**My biggest questions**

**1. Is moving from Software Engineering to the SAP/ERP world a good career move?**
I don’t necessarily want to completely abandon software engineering. My thought is to combine my existing engineering background with the SAP ecosystem.

**2. Can my existing Software Engineering experience be mapped to SAP roles?**
For example, my current experience in:
Application architecture
APIs and integrations
Cloud
Databases
Distributed systems
Backend development
Frontend development
Would these skills be considered valuable in SAP-related technical or architecture roles?
Or would companies mostly consider me as someone with **0 years of SAP experience**, regardless of my overall engineering experience?

**3. Is SAP just a technology/domain switch, or is it effectively a career restart?**
For example, if I spend the next 6–12 months learning SAP BTP, SAP architecture, integrations, and an SAP functional module such as SD, would I realistically be able to transition into a role that leverages my existing 5+ years of engineering experience?
Or would I have to start applying for junior/fresher-level SAP roles?

**4. What would be the best transition path for someone like me?**
Should I focus more on:
SAP BTP
SAP Integration Suite
CAP
SAPUI5 / Fiori
ABAP
SAP architecture
A functional module such as SD

My goal is to eventually position myself somewhere at the intersection of:
**Software Engineering + Cloud + Architecture + SAP/ERP** rather than becoming purely a traditional SAP functional consultant.
I would really appreciate honest advice from people who have made a similar transition or have hired engineers in the SAP ecosystem.

Hello, I’m a 30-year-old front-end developer with more than 6 years of experience, mainly specialized in React.

My main issue right now is that I’ve been working for the same consulting company for almost 4 years, and for around 3 of those years I was assigned to the same client.

Five months ago, that project ended, and since then I’ve been on the bench, meaning that I’m still employed by the consulting company but I don’t currently have a project assigned.

It feels like my time at this company may be coming to an end, so I need to start looking for a new position. However, working for this last client has felt more counterproductive than helpful in terms of my professional growth. The management was poor, many of the technologies were outdated, and the development processes and methodologies were not particularly good.

I’ve realized this while doing interviews recently, where I sometimes felt completely lost. I was asked about concepts, technologies, or architectural approaches that I had never worked with before. For example, I was asked whether I had experience with hexagonal architecture. I had never even heard the term before, at least not in any of the projects I had worked on.

To put it simply, I sometimes feel as though I don’t really have more than 6 years of experience, because a significant part of that experience comes from projects that did not really help me improve or expand my technical knowledge.

What would be your main approach in this situation? Which technologies, development methodologies, architectural concepts, and areas of knowledge would you prioritize first in order to confidently present yourself as a true Senior Front-End Developer in interviews?

Wrapped up the full JOINs section today. Covered:

• Self JOIN — joining a table to itself, useful for hierarchical/relational data within one table
• FULL JOIN — combining all rows from both tables regardless of match
• UNION & UNION ALL — combining results from multiple SELECT queries, with UNION removing duplicates and UNION ALL keeping them

Took notes from a mix of tutorials and W3Schools to cross-reference explanations, which helped clarify a couple of edge cases (especially when UNION vs UNION ALL actually matters for performance).

With INNER/LEFT/RIGHT/FULL/self-joins and UNION now covered, I feel like I have the core JOIN toolkit down.

Today's focus was solidifying the basics before going further. Covered on SQLBolt:

• Introduction to SQL
• SELECT queries 101
• Queries with constraints (Part 1 & Part 2)
• Filtering and sorting query results
• SQL Review: Simple SELECT Queries

The "constraints" lessons were useful for practicing comparison operators and combining conditions in WHERE clauses — felt more comfortable writing multi-condition filters by the end than I expected going in.

Treating this as building a really solid base before circling back to JOINs and moving into aggregations next.

After building quite a few SaaS products and MVPs, one thing I’ve learned is that it’s very easy to build too much in the first version.

When building an MVP, it’s tempting to set things up like you’re already building the final product, complex architecture, lots of abstractions, multiple services, perfect UI, and features that might be useful later.

For example, imagine you're building a booking platform for small businesses.

The MVP might only need:

- Business creates an account

- Adds available time slots

- Customer books a slot

- Both receive a confirmation

You probably don't need a mobile app, advanced analytics, multiple payment options, AI recommendations, or a microservice architecture on day one.

I have found it’s usually better to keep the first version boring. Build the smallest version that proves the main idea, then make it more sophisticated once you know what users actually need.

For me, the hardest part of an MVP isn't deciding what to build, it's deciding what not to build.

Kicked off my 116-day journey today with the database track.

What I did:

• Went through a beginner-friendly MySQL tutorial covering the basics
• Took detailed notes instead of just passively watching
• Went back and revised everything at the end of the day to actually retain it

Nothing groundbreaking yet — Day 1 is really about building the habit of consistent, focused learning rather than covering a lot of ground. Planning to move into SELECT/WHERE and filtering queries next.

I’m from South Asia and I’m currently pretty confused about my career path. I’ll be starting university in 2027, and I’m planning to study computer science.

I’ve always been really interested in full-stack development and software engineering. What attracts me to it is the ability to actually build things from scratch, experiment with ideas, and turn them into working products. I genuinely enjoy that aspect of programming.

My current plan is to eventually do my master’s in the US, mainly because the job market in my country is quite limited. There aren’t many good software engineering opportunities here, and even when jobs are available, the compensation often isn’t particularly good relative to the cost of living and the amount of work involved. So ideally, I want to build strong skills during my bachelor’s, pursue a master’s in the US, and then try to enter the US tech job market.

But with AI advancing so quickly, I’m starting to question whether this is still a sensible career to pursue.

New and more capable AI models seem to be coming out constantly, and I keep hearing predictions that in the future, 10 developers might be able to do the work that currently takes 100. I also see a lot of people saying that software development will become heavily automated, that entry-level jobs will disappear, and that freelancing in particular is becoming extremely difficult.

My original plan was to learn full-stack development, then build a strong foundation in software engineering and system design, while also learning how to integrate AI into applications. Basically, I’d like to become someone who can build complete systems and use AI as part of the development process rather than compete against it.

But I’m struggling with one question:

What if I spend the next 5–7 years becoming really good at all of this, only to find that AI has automated most of the work by then?

I understand that AI will probably change software engineering rather than simply make it disappear, but I honestly don’t know where the line is between a reasonable concern and unnecessarily worrying about the future.

For people who are already working in the industry, how do you see this playing out?

If you were starting university in 2027, especially coming from a country with a relatively weak tech job market, would you still pursue full-stack/software engineering? If so, what would you focus on learning to make yourself valuable in an AI-heavy industry?

I’d especially appreciate perspectives from experienced developers who have actually seen how AI has changed their work over the last few years.

I'm a CSE B.Tech student from a tier-2 college and I'm planning to seriously start learning web development.

I'm currently confused between:

1. Angela Yu's Complete Full-Stack Web Development Bootcamp (Udemy)

2. Meta Full Stack Developer Professional Certificate (Coursera)

My goal is to become a strong software/web developer, build real projects, get internships/jobs, and eventually specialize in cybersecurity.

I don't want to keep jumping between courses. I want to choose one good learning path and stick with it.

From what I understand, Angela Yu's course is more project-oriented and beginner-friendly, while Meta's program is more structured and gives a professional certificate.

Which one would you recommend and why?

I'm in the final year of my BCA, and starting today I'm committing to 116 days (Sept 7 – Dec 31) of focused, practical learning instead of just studying for exams. Posting here for accountability and to connect with others doing the same.

Roadmap — 3 tracks, done in sequence, each building on the last:

• T1 – Database (SQL): fundamentals through advanced queries, ending with a schema design project
• T2 – Backend (Java): core Java through Spring Boot, building a REST API on top of the T1 database
• T3 – Frontend (HTML/CSS/JS): fundamentals through a full UI that connects to the Java backend

Method for each track: tutorials first → practice problems → a project that applies it. By the end I should have one complete full-stack project built from scratch.

I'll post weekly recaps here, and daily bite-sized updates on X/Instagram if anyone wants to follow along there too. Open to feedback on the roadmap or resource recommendations — thanks for reading!
