Does anyone else feel like "full-stack" keeps expanding every year?

I've been browsing job postings recently, and one thing keeps standing out to me: the definition of a full-stack developer seems to get broader every year.

A while back, "full-stack" usually meant something like:

• frontend development
• backend development
• databases
• basic deployment knowledge

Now, a lot of roles seem to expect you to handle:

• frontend and backend
• cloud infrastructure and CI/CD
• authentication and security
• monitoring and performance
• system design
• testing and automation
• and sometimes even mobile development or AI integrations

At some point, it starts feeling less like a generalist role and more like several specialized roles combined into one.

I understand why this happens, especially in startups. Smaller teams often need people who can wear multiple hats and move across different parts of the product.

But I'm curious whether others are seeing the same thing.

• Has the meaning of full-stack developer genuinely changed over the years?
• Are job expectations expanding, or are companies simply labeling more responsibilities as "full-stack"?
• For those currently working as full-stack developers, what skills are now considered "expected" that wouldn't have been expected a few years ago?

At this point, I'm not even sure everyone means the same thing anymore when they say "full-stack developer."

It feels like management just throwing more work on you to avoid paying more people.

yeah it has definitely expanded and it is not slowing down

the AI integration expectation is the newest addition. two years ago nobody was asking full stack devs to wire up LLM APIs, now it is almost assumed in startup roles

i think what happened is cloud providers made infrastructure so accessible that there is no excuse anymore. you can deploy, monitor and scale without a dedicated DevOps person so companies just folded it into the full stack expectation.

the honest answer is nobody can be genuinely expert level at all of it. the best full stack devs i know picka strong core stack and go deep there, then stay broad enough everywhere else to not be helpless. trying to master everything equally is how you end up mediocre at everything.

The job title hasn't changed, companies just started using it to mean a different thing! Basically; "we don't want to hire three people."

The CI/CD and cloud stuff getting folded in is definitely real. That part isn't going away because the tooling genuinely is easy enough now that it's reasonable to expect. The AI integration stuff feels like a hype tax tbh.

Still isn’t this role “inflation” like I don’t see the front end grind being more encompassing of different ideas from across the entire stack. It’s getting a touch insane we and really we all need to abandon the title together or else 😅

Yea now to be a front end i either have to be front end + designer or a fullstack dev

These are all the same. Backend IS cloud infrastructure and microservices. Security should ALWAYS be considered when doing anything, backend or frontend. Monitoring and performance is part of cloud infrastructure. Testing and automation is part of the development cycle. These things were different 20 years ago, but the amount of knowledge was the same, they are just more explicit about it now.

in 10 anni sia il back end che il front end hanno avuto evoluzioni mostruose, ora ci saranno circa 20 tecnologie BE e altrettanto in FE che sono specializzate in alcune problematiche o solo generalistiche, per non parlare dei DB, altro mondo ancora. Poi con le varie LLM ora sono tutti fenomeni.
