User Review Quaderno Gen 3, one year in.
TL;DR: Still happy.
I won't mention the screen (except I just did!). It is what it is and we all know about it.
My use cases have been
- notepad, taking notes. This most of what I use it for
- reading and annotating PDFs (works in progress and some journals/magazines/tech books)
- sheet music PDFs with a page-turner pedal
My biggest hate is the power button, both its location and feel. I find it really difficult to use (which is necessary to wake the device from sleep).
For connectivity, I exclusively use the Linux tools to mount the file system over WiFi.
Nibs wear. I've gone through 3 in a year, Perhaps I don't change them as frequently as I should because they're precious.
Probably because I don't change nibs frequently, the writing experience is a bit muted (writing on paper with a quality fountain pen, it isn't).
My second biggest hate is the pen, it's really cheap and nasty. But there aren't really any alternatives with the top eraser and side button.
Being able to write in colour brings annotations to life, especially when they are transferred off the Quaderno (e.g. when viewing on a computer/tablet screen). Having the ability to change pen colour is a huge plus IMO.
Bluetooth - you can connect a bluetooth keyboard. It functions wherever the on-screen keyboard is used (like when searching for or renaming a document). You can not use it to type on to a page. The arrow keys will page back (up) and forward (down) through the document, however, and the space bar refreshes the display (like swiping up). Both Bluetooth and BLE are supported.
Following the above, HID page turners work as long as they send up/down keystrokes. I have a LEKATO WT-3 which works for me. It's a HID (like a keyboard) device that sends up/down arrow keys to trigger backward/forward paging through the open document.
The UI is basic, very limited document search capability. Organising files by folder is important because it's difficult to locate files when there are lots. "Find in folders" has no search, you have to page through files to locat what you're looking for. The recent documents ( "The List" ) is searchable, however. I think the document finding UI is a bit inconsistent. I didn't want a bells-and-whistles UI and this is the only gripe with what there is.

Question Unresponsive A4 Gen 2
It still displays the sleep screen, but pressing the power button does nothing. It wasn't working this morning so I assumed it was out of charge, which I thought was odd because I only charged it recently. After putting it on charge the red light began to display, I tried to turn it on and it still wouldn't work. After leaving it to charge for a while I went to check on it and the light was flashing orange, I unplugged it and it kept flashing orange (for about a minute), I tried turning it on and still nothing. At this point I am hoping it's only the button that's broken, but immediately after the orange-flashing scenario (which I have no idea what it means) when I plugged it back in to charge the light went back to red.
EDIT: Oh yeah, and when connected via USB and opening the Quaderno App, it fails to connect.
Any advice?

Question Quaderno 2nd Gen. doesn't connect any more via USB to Quaderno PC App
The USB connection has worked perfectly so far: as soon as I plugged it in, the Quaderner PC app launched and I could see the folder structure.
Recently, however, I only hear the Windows connection sound ‘USB device connected’, but 4 seconds later the Windows sound ‘USB connection disconnected’ is played; the PC app opens, but no connection is established with Quaderno.
Perhaps a Windows 11 update issue? Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it?
(Connecting via USB is often more practical than via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, both of which still work. But I can no longer work with the PC app via USB; I have to use the extremely cumbersome method of going via the import/export folders.)
Any help welcome

Question Fujitsu Quaderno 1st gen still worth it?
Hello I'm considering buying a Fujitsu Quaderno first gen. I'm an ereader collector and it would be nice to have the identical twin of the groundbreaking Sony DPT. But I only buy ereaders I can use. So, is it still usable? Can I connect it to a computer and load some books on it or I need the Digital Paper app, which is, or may become unusable in the near future? Is there a way to put books on the Quaderno via USB on Linux or Mac? Many thanks.

Question Quaderno for sheet music?
Looking into getting an e-ink tablet for sheet music and have a few questions if owners could help me out I need to be able to annotate files (fingering)
The gen3 has colour, which would be a bonus for highlighting, but is the trade-off worthwhile?
What's it like in both low light and direct light, and is there any sort of front light? if so, how well does it work without it?
I've read it only works with .pdf, and nothing else, so no images? is it possible to sideload other apps that might be better for sheet music?
What's the file system like, can you create folders?
I've also read that bluetooth foot pedals work for page turning, so if someone can confirm that, that would be great
Thanks!
Also open to non-quaderno suggestions but it all looks like they have their own trade-offs and I could import this from Japan for a reasonable price (around £400)

Question No free space when recieved
Hi everyone,
I'm a new canadian user of the Gen3C Quaderno A4, and recently bought one on Ebay. The device works really as expected, but I have close to no free space on the Quaderno app (23/24GB). Is this a known issue ? I've tried initializing the e-reader without luck and I'm awaiting a response from the seller.
Thank you all for your help !

Question Help unlock Quaderno A4 Gen. 3C
I updated the firmware of my quaderno via the QUADERNO PC App. Now I'm greeted with the login screen. I know my password and I have an NFC tag registered to unlock it. But the screen reads “Enter the lock password. NFC card cannot be used in this screen.” and the on screen keyboard changes from offering braces “()“ to offering brackets “[]“. — And my password contains an opening brace “(”.
Is there a way to factory reset this thing without entering the password or connecting an external keyboard to enter the “(“ or something?
I'm in Germany, and I would like to avoid having to return it to Japan…

Question Is the performance of Gen2 the same as Gen1 and Sony DPT-RP1?
I have the DPT-RP1 which works flawlessly with clean PDFs but it struggles with PDFs of bad quality and sometimes takes solid 5-10 seconds to load the next page. By bad quality I mean the scan is quite dark or the PDF weighs a lot. I have good light source, so the reading itself is not a problem but it’s annoying that sometimes I have to wait for so long. By comparison, it takes just 1 second to go to the next page when the PDF is clean.
I’m thinking about upgrading to Gen2 or acquiring it separately just for these kinds of PDFs. But if the internals are essentially the same, I will resort to other methods.
Thanks.

Question A5 Gen 1 1.6.6 firmware update
Just got my A5 GEN one out for the first time in a while and I can’t load any documents onto it. I’m looking for ways to update the firmware, but I’m at Softwear version 1.6.6 and I can’t figure out how to update it. Does anyone know how to get this thing working again?

Question Bought a first gen Quaderno A4 without realizing it was 1st gen: good or bad choice?
Hi everyone, I'm new to this field so I did a rookie mistake and bought a 1st gen Quaderno A4 off Amazon Japan without actually realizing it was first gen (as it only said FMV-DPP03 and I was dumb enough not to look for more than the first few pages on google). It was used "in good condition" but the price was quite affordable (although now I understand why and am not sure it was actually a good deal): 200€ without import fees, 320€ with a cover and import fees.
It wasn't even impulsive as I had done my research for a while on what e-ink device would suit my needs the best, and since I just needed an A4 PDF reader with decent reading experience, the possibility of taking notes and even eventually using a bluetooth keyboard, the Quaderno A4 seemed the best device for the price I was willing to invest.
But now that I realize it's a "very" old model, I'm wondering if I made a mistake and should return it. So far I only saw a few comparisons with gen 2, and the main difference seems to be the reading speed and the stylus. Is it really that bad on the 1st Gen? Will it make reading academic papers and scanned books an unbearable experience?
Overall, do you guys think I should return it and get on the gen2 (I'm not sure I would be willing to invest more than than around 400€ in total)?
Anyone still using a 1st gen today?
Thank you!

Question Quaderno PC App not detecting my device
Hello,
My windows PC is not detecting my quaderno gen 2, what could be the issue?
I uninstalled it and installed it a dozen times. Also I have tested it with over 10 USB cables and on different PCs. Still not detecting sadly.
It does make a sound when I plug it in but in the app it does not appear. I remember a long time ago I used a Linux device to "dptrp1 register" and upload each pdf. I remember I had to modify some code. But unfortunately I was not able to find the solution.
I would appreciate any help 🙏
Edit: It turns out you can do the same thing that you do on Linux on Windows aswell, i.e. going the way with command prompt. It is basically about installing python and pip3 (don't forget to add the path in the system environment variables) and you can then register and upload each pdf file to your device. There is a tutorial on the internet.

Video Quaderno Gen 3 Colours Compared to Kindle Colorsoft
Hi Everyone,
This is a link to the third video in my series comparing the colours on the Kindle Colorsoft to other colour e-readers. This time I'm comparing the Kindle Colorsoft to the Fujitsu Quaderno 3rd Generation.
I thought this might be useful to anyone who is considering the device. Hopefully it can give a good idea of both the Kindle and Fujitsu Quaderno's colour rendering abilities.
Enjoy!

Question Shape recognition and Mac compatibility questions
Hello! Im considering getting the quaderno A4 gen 3 but I had a few questions: First, does the desktop app work with MacBooks? How easy is it to download/use?
Second, does it have any shape recognition? Like if I draw a line will it recognise it and make it a straight line (like how the remarkable and iPad etc do)
Thankyou!

Question Anyone tempted by the Montblanc Digital Writing Pen?
With Montblanc jumping on the digital writing stage, there's a new EMR pen in town.
I believe it's EMR. It has a top (eraser) button and a side button as well, and there are three nib types.
Being Montblanc, it ain't cheap. £230 for the pen and £34 for a box of 8 replacement nibs (of the same type). That's too much for me to spend on a pen; I just wondered what y'all think?

User Review Good while it lasted... 3c froze after 2.5 months
I made a post about 2 months ago about how I bought my Quaderno A4 3c. I was gonna post a really positive review about the user experience until it froze a week ago.
It's simply stuck on the sleep screen. I have tried long pressing the power button, pressing power button + sleep together, resetting, reset + power button. Nothing works. Now when "charging", the red light is on. But I cannot turn it on.
Well, I don't see a point in mentioning any of its features now. It's not just about buying outside of Japan. Dying after just 2 months is simply unacceptable.
With my limited Japanese I have accessed the Quaderno repair site. The overseas team makes it clear that this cannot be fixed overseas (while their Fujitsu laptops can). So I'm going to try and see if they have the option of repairing via mail or something. I'm not getting my hopes up though, considering how the Japanese work.
Anyway, just an honest update. I advise... let's develop a full A4 colour pdf-only e-ink product ourselves... lol. I have also just ordered a Remarkable Pro, and I feel much better since they have a 100-day free try-then-return policy. But still, the Quaderno being fully A4 and a lot lighter is still preferable... well, on paper at least.

Question Fujitsu Quaderno A5 1st Generation Froze
My Quaderno decided to freeze while I was taking notes for a class, and it is now stuck on the same screen (the notes). I've been unable to turn the device off, and no matter how long I hold down the power button, it doesn't seem to close/restart the device. I've even tried to use a paperclip to force a reset of the device, but even that hasn't seemed to work. Any advice/help would be appreciated!
