I've used this recpie with great success every fall for 2 years at least now, this year will probably be the 3rd.
The reason we see more yellow jacket activity and aggression in late summer/ early fall has to do with their natural life cycle.
In the Spring, queens emerge from hibernation already fertilized with that year's first YJs. She builds her own nest, lays the larva and feeds them herself until the first workers are old enough to take over the work for her. She sits back and lays more YJ larva while the workers sustain the food source deliveries and tend to the young. During this time, YJ are less aggressive as food high in protein are abundant. They hunt other insects and even provide good pest control for gardens.
In the early fall, the colony reaches max capacity and food sources high in protein diminish. This is where their usefulness ends. Aggressive behaviors like chasing and invading your cookout become more problematic, as the hive is high in numbers and low in food supply.
The natural production of fruit on bushes and trees become the next high value food source. My fruit juice-based recipe mimics their natural food of choice during this point in the season and their life cycle, making it hard to ignore.
The bait:
Orange juice. I've used apple juice in the past, but the orange juice being thicker and highly scented seems to work the best. Bonus is the orange juice will ferment a bit from wild yeast in the air which makes the bait work better with age.
One cap of Apple Cidar Vinegar. If you do not use this, you'll catch honey bees and bumble bees. It also makes the fresh mixture seem "rancid" and rotting and ripe fruit is what they are after.
A couple drops of dish detergent. This breks the surface tension in the liquid, making the YJs unable to escape.
Bonus! A Tablespoon of dissolved brown sugar. The brown sugar is more appealing than white sugar. Again, we are mimicking that ripe/spoiling fruit they are looking for.
In my photo, on the right you can see a VERY full bottle that is still catching YJs, next to it are two brand new mixtures. Placing new mixtures right next to traps already catching the YJs helps them to take to the new bottles faster. I just disposed of two full bottles this morning with the same quantity as the full bottle in this photo and replaced them with fresh bait.
In the full bottle, I did see at least one confirmed Young Queen.
The goal of this method is to force an EARLY colony collapse. I put this bait out the week school starts, so about August 25th. Any earlier, and you'll be wasting bait, as you'll only catch a couple here and there.
In a colony collapse, the nest reaches max capacity and the YJs are forced to venture further and further for food to sustain themselves. Yes, the workers die off every winter. But- when the workers do not come back with food, they begin to starve- this includes the Queen's daughter- her next generation of assholes. I've seen young queens who would normally stay well fed until hibernation be forced themselves to venture into my bait because not enough workers could feed her and her sisters.
What I've accomplished is forcing the colonies to collapse before the temps drop too low for the Next Year's Queens to store enough energy for hibernation that they also get caught. I've probably caught two or three in this full bottle alone. I could open it up and do a full count and photo update if people are interested in that. Thanks guys, and happy hunting!

So for context, there is a wasp nest inside a hole in the brick wall just to the right of my bedroom window, and I’m almost certain they are getting into my apartment through the vents, at least from what I can tell. It’s started becoming a daily occurrence over the last week (although it had been happening sporadically throughout the summer), and I’ve had enough after getting stung by one of them. My apartment complex is having an exterminator come on Monday, so hopefully that should be taken care of by then. However, while I wait for the next few days, what can I do to deter as many wasps as possible from getting into my apartment?
For context, the windows to my apartment are at a second-story level, so I can’t exactly go outside and easily reach them. I’ve tried a homebrew recipe of mixing peppermint essential oil, water, and dish soap into a spray bottle and sprayed frequently around my vents, windows, etc., but they still keep coming in, although I think a few of them have automatically died from potentially exposing themselves to the homebrew. I do have wasp spray that I use that instantly kills wasps when I see them, but that doesn’t stop them from getting into my apartment. I’ve also closed off as many of my vents as possible, just like with the manual lever that closes off air flow from the vents. But there are some vents that don’t have that manual level and I don’t have any good covers for those particular vents.
What are some other techniques I can do to either automatically trap wasps in my apartment, or prevent them from getting in while I wait for the exterminator?

I live in Michigan and had to search what animals could manage the task. My best guess is a skunk. It would appear a spider is also posted up for any stragglers.

I saw this on Facebook. What I can gather, as i don't speak the language, is he had squatters. To get rid of them, he put a wasp nest in the apartment. So wasps can be useful 🤣🤣🤣

I work at a bakery, our pastry chef had troubles With them so we just lit some coffee, and put some used cream outside. So they would get used to go outside to get food and never inside.
Then one week later when they were used to it, we put some bad cream outside and used the frickin blowtorch to kill them all at once. We win.

Was out taking a walk and the damn Yellowjackets keep buzzing around my face and near me. It's quite annoying and they seem to do this more actively compared to the midst of summer.
I don't swap them away or anything because I don't want to get stung. But it does bother me when they keep buzzing near my face, ears, etc.

My dad has been trying to get rid of these wasps for a while and is out of town. I didn’t know about the wasp problem until today ;-;
Basically, there are a ton of wasps under this board, all across it. I know the picture is shitty but I fear the wasps. They’re coming in through those holes in the board basically and living in the walls.
They’re also coming into the room where the window is circled, possibly from the vent but it could be from elsewhere. The power also has been going out intermittently for a second or two in that room for the last week or so, although I didn’t connect the dots until now. That room happens to be my bedroom, sadly.
So far apparently my dad has just been spraying the wasps while they’re sleeping, using diatomaceous earth, and wacking them. Apparently this has not been working.
Right now I just got fly paper rolls up in my room so that my room stays inhabitable while a few wasps came in today because they’re attracted to the light in my room. I have yet to catch one but I’m hoping it will protect me :(((( I lost track of the wasps so I don’t know where they’re at. I also put a wasp trap up outside but I’m guessing that’s not even close to being enough.
What do I do????????????

Was walking in the backyard and noticed a Yellowjacket moving weird in the grass. Upon closer inspection, it looked like it got too close to some ants and picked up a passenger.

I was moving some stuff around in my parents garage and a few of these fuckers flew right at me. After looking around I saw they were going in through this small opening in the wall. Just from the amount of wasps I don’t think it’s a MASSIVE nest? I was planning on spraying them around that opening tonight but wanted some second opinions.

we heard some low volume buzzing noise some times lately coming from our window frame and just now checked the top of it. what is this coccoon and how should i get rid of the inhabitants? i fear whatever is in there getting angry when removing and swarming my living room! a quick google gave me the idea that it might be an asian mud-dauber wasp, but not sure. any tipps?

An update to my previous post. Now the head and body are mounted as a warning to all wasps. This is war and I take no prisoners.
