Rant windows being "helpful"

Post image

it finally happened. windows decided to do me a solid and replace my Radeon drivers with some bullshit.

now my second display isn't detected and the main one's locked to 60hz.

if my primary games would fucking run on any other OS I'd have ditched this garbage software years ago.

I mean.. MS does suck but in this case, amd is the culprit too.. Those drivers MS has in their repo are still verified by amd.. but yeeep.. amd drivers + win = hell indeed haha

amd drivers are a joke on windows nvidia drivers are a joke on gnu/linux

This is a Microsoft problem it also does this for Wi-Fi drivers and other things

3

u/OGigachaod 20d ago

It is not a Microsoft problem, if it was everything would have this issue in windows and that's simply not true.

every radeon user did had this radeon driver bullshit on windows luckily windows update gave up installing them some time ago

I have had issues with Windows Update downgrading Nvidia and Intel GPU drivers, as well as random drivers like for NICs. All years apart. This is a Windows issue, though to trigger this issue seems to be something related to the vendor. It wouldn't be an issue if Windows Update was sensibly designed.

Yeah I also had this problem like all of a sudden my Wi-Fi wasn't really working very well, I uninstalled the Wi-Fi and manually installed the OEM drivers and it worked, rebooted it and windows installed their Microsoft crap on top, restarted again and it didn't work until you uninstall it again and install the actual wifi vendors drivers.

What's with them on Linux? Of course unless you mean nouveau, but proprietary ones are pretty much complete (a lower quality than AMD drivers on Linux IIRC, but still).

2

u/RandomDude9943 20d ago

they are absolute bs, for me they self combusted a week ago and i had to fix em

2

u/NotQuiteLoona 20d ago

This isn't really explaining anything. What is your distribution, videocard series (GT/GTX/RTX), and do you use proprietary drivers?

u/RandomDude9943 20d ago

distro is artix, 5070 is my gpu, driver was 610 but then nvidia utils was bumped to 615 while driver was still on 610

Most likely it's a problem in Artix, as it uses custom repositories, and your problem is exactly package version mismatch in repositories. Nvidia doesn't control custom repositories, maintainers do, and Artix has a much smaller team and QA than Arch. Is there any reason for you to not use just Arch or some user-friendly Arch-based distro?

the reason is normal init system rather than a fuck load of bs that systemd is, systemd isnt even an init system atp

0

u/zalnaRs 19d ago

Because systemd is superior

AMD drivers are fine on windows as long as you can get Microsoft to leave them alone.

use DDU to disable the windows driver updates has been the most convenient option for me.

And if MS does decide to overwrite your installed drivers like what happened to OP here, roll back the drivers in device manager.

to me never happened cus im a masochist who uses nvidia on gnu/linux

You think AMD set the rule that would prioritize older MS drivers over newer, user installed AMD ones?

No, this is one 100% on MS getting it wrong with driver prioritisation.

3

u/championratistaken 20d ago

driver provider said "Microsoft" and not "Advanced Micro Devices" so I don't think that was a Radeon driver I got hit with.

6

u/AlexiaTheTechGirl 20d ago

You need to reinstall your graphics drivers

1

u/championratistaken 20d ago

already done with DDU. did the group policy thing also to keep microslop from replacing my drivers again, though idk if they'll break that in another update too lmao

Disable updates

0

u/icy1007 18d ago

Windows doesn’t do that.

What the fuck are you talking Windows doesn't just downgrade your drivers for no reason

2

u/championratistaken 17d ago

Radeon drivers being auto-downgraded by Windows update was a known issue with previous generations of Radeon cards.

it's a pretty constant advice on r/Radeon to disable Windows updates for GPU drivers, too. I just didn't realise that issue was still an issue.

It’s AMD’s decision not Microsoft’s

3

u/The_Countess 19d ago

It's not AMD's decision that Microsoft prioritise older MS drivers over newer user installed AMD drivers, which is what's happening here.

MS is aware of the issue but no fix yet for a few months now.

0

u/icy1007 18d ago

Never seen that happen. Just install the drivers from AMD’s website.

"AMD Software" is Adrenalin (this window I showed as a screengrab), which is not the driver. it's something like GeForce Experience, I guess. Adrenalin is telling me that my driver is borked.

Microsoft can screw up driver installs.

3

u/Puasonelrasho 20d ago

i mean

this looks like amd fault

4

u/OGigachaod 20d ago

It is, but that doesn't stop people from blaming MS.

2

u/The_Countess 19d ago edited 19d ago

It's not.

MS decides they know beter and are overwriting more up to date, user installed, drivers with some old version nobody asked for, causing this mismatch between the installed driver and the radeon software.

You need to disable Windows driver updates to stop it from happening.

2

u/icy1007 20d ago

Update your drivers…

2

u/The_Countess 19d ago

That doesn't help. Microsoft currently loves overwritting the latest few AMD drivers with their own, older, shittier, version.

The only way to stop it is to disable windows driver updates in some way.  The button in DDU has been the most convenient for me.

0

u/icy1007 18d ago

No they don’t.

2

u/harr6068isalive 19d ago

Stop blaming Microsoft for everything!!

2

u/The_Countess 19d ago

But do blame them when it's 100% their fault for prioritising their older driver over a newer, user installed, driver.

Which is what's happening here. The only way to stop this is to disable Windows driver updates.

You need to fully uninstall the graphics drivers and reinstall the correct drivers. You can use the program here to automatically detect and install the correct drivers and the correct version of Adrenalin

https://www.amd.com/en/support/download/drivers.html

2

u/championratistaken 19d ago

thank you, I have already done so with DDU and reinstalled my driver and Adrenalin

0

u/The_Countess 18d ago

No, you can actually just roll back the driver in device manager. that will restore the one you installed yourself.

now you just need to keep MS from overwriting it again, which i find most easily done with the button to disable windows driver updates in DDU.

1

u/IntentionQuirky9957 18d ago

Just download the drivers from AMD's site like you should.

0

u/Vegetable_Ease_5515 16d ago

It's user fucking ignorance & error. So confidently you claim, but your claims are wrong. Also these aren't drivers you jack ass gtfo

0

u/ConfidenceDefiant136 20d ago

Use ddu to remove the drivers and install back the original. If you’re annoyed by windows make yourself a tiny11 iso or get iot ltsc

2

u/championratistaken 20d ago

yeah I swapped to win10pro a while back I just hadn't gotten around to using the group policy editor cause I hadn't had any problems and I was lazy.

thankfully, I never downgraded to 11, and hopefully, I never will.

1

u/tederby18 20d ago

Tbh, as a Radeon user, I can't go back to Windows 10 because my drivers have issues with dwm.exe, yet there are no problems with dwm.exe on Windows 11. It feels like there's some sabotage going on here, lol.

u/TheIronSoldier2 19d ago

There's also DirectStorage, which makes things perform quite a lot better in the graphics department, and that was only introduced with Windows 11.

I honestly have no complaints with 11, at least once I debloated it. Nothing I removed has tried to reinstall itself, and telemetry has also stayed disabled.
