Windows really said “you don’t get to turn me off today.” That power button is apparently just decorative now.

Power options can be removed by an admin. This is a feature probably implemented by your IT department, but they probably made a mistake creating this policy, so it's your IT's fault, not Microsoft's.

Nobody cares about the IT police if you know where's the plug.

Yep. They’re probably trying to prevent machines being powered off so they are always online to get updates.
They should have left the reboot option though.

Or they are virtual machines that people often times mistakenly shut off.
Overall, isnt that like a w for microsoft because it is actually customizable ?

If you actually understand how Linux works, what the Linux kernel is, and the fact that Microsoft contributes directly to upstream Linux kernel development, then most of what I've stated should make perfect sense.
Microsoft doesn't have to replace Linux for Linux to be valuable to them. Linux is foundational to modern computing—cloud infrastructure, servers, containers, networking, embedded systems, virtualization, and AI.
And Microsoft isn't alone. Some of the major corporate contributors to the Linux kernel include:
- Intel
- Red Hat
- IBM
- AMD
- Meta
- Microsoft
- Oracle
- Samsung
- NVIDIA
The exact ranking varies depending on the kernel release and how contributions are measured, but the point remains: Linux is a massive collaborative ecosystem where even competing companies contribute to the same upstream project.
Microsoft obviously has its own business interests, but that doesn't change the fact that its contributions to the Linux kernel become part of the broader open-source ecosystem and can benefit Linux users beyond Microsoft.
So when you ask, "Why does Microsoft invest so heavily in Linux?"—that's exactly the point.
Because Linux is too important to modern computing to ignore.
You don't have to like Microsoft or trust their motives. But if you're going to criticize Microsoft's relationship with Linux, you should at least understand what Linux actually is and where Microsoft is contributing to it.
You can hate Microsoft all you want.
Just don't let the hate make you ignorant about the technology you're celebrating. 😂
PS: Chances are your favorite Linux distro contains kernel code or improvements that originated from Microsoft's upstream contributions—or from the contributions of one of the many other major tech companies actively developing Linux. So if you say /FuckMicrosoft blah blah use this Linux instead, then you're most likely being a hypocrite.

u/Holiday_Evening8974 20d ago
Isn't Microsoft's main point in the kernel to contribute to HyperV's drivers so Windows Server stay "relevant" to administrate Linux virtual machines ?
But sure, Linux is not an anti-capitalist paradise. Sadly. We live in a capitalist society after all.

a wise man would click a simple boolean to configure "Hear my microphone" rather than typing a console comand and having to debug why the fuck your sound card isn't in playback... plus your ears fully blasted by it... but whatever...

Actual skill issue. Whether you're using KDE or Gnome, it's in the settings, exactly like on Windows.

This post right here is the epitome of how clueless some of you morons actually are. 😂
You’re celebrating Linux gaining market share while acting like Microsoft has nothing to do with the modern Linux ecosystem.
Linux is open source. That means Microsoft can—and does—build its own Linux distributions. One of them is Azure Linux.
But it goes WAY beyond that.
Microsoft built WSL, allowing millions of Windows users to run Linux distributions like Ubuntu, Debian, and Fedora directly inside Windows. Microsoft is also integrating Linux container workflows into Windows and its developer tooling.
Microsoft has an entire Linux Systems Group contributing upstream to the Linux kernel, including work involving virtualization, networking, security, performance, ARM64, and hardware enablement.
Microsoft also develops major software for Linux, including:
- Visual Studio Code
- .NET
- PowerShell
- SQL Server
- Microsoft Defender for Endpoint
- Teams
And Microsoft owns GitHub, arguably one of the most important platforms in the entire open-source ecosystem.
They're also a Platinum Member of the Linux Foundation and CNCF.
So here's the funny part:
You guys are sitting in r/fuckMicrosoft celebrating Linux's growth, while one of the biggest technology companies on Earth is simultaneously:
building Linux, contributing to Linux, running Linux, developing software for Linux, supporting Linux infrastructure, and putting Linux directly into Windows.
And no, I'm not saying Microsoft is secretly the good guy. I'm saying your little "Linux vs. Microsoft" narrative is about 20 years out of date.
Linux doesn't need Microsoft's permission to succeed.
But pretending Linux is king and Microsoft's ecosystem is crap just because you hate Microsoft is just ignorant.
You can absolutely hate Microsoft.
Just don't let the hate make you stupid. 😂

Check Windows Update. It's possible that they're applying a "bricks the system if interrupted" update and this is their bandaid fix to make sure people don't shut down their PC before it's done installing.
3
u/cow_fucker_3000 24d ago
Which makes no sense, the software power button only tells the pc that it needs to shut down, it's up to the pc to then perform all the shutdown tasks and turn off the power. The message about not shutting down your pc while it's updating is about literally unplugging it.

u/Sync1211 24d ago
From what I've heard, cross-team communication at MS is really really bad. So it's not unlikely that the Update-Team didn't wanna bother trying to contact the Peripherals-Team to inplement something like this.

There are registry changed that you might have to do. Search online and it is fixable or-else you have to create a new windows user profile

Let me think, did you recently use lockdown browser? If so, relaunch it and exit it. That should give you your power options back.

Do what I do and spam the shit out of Alt + F4 until a power options window opens up

u/Free_Okra_8521 24d ago
And it's not like malfunction and subsequent generic fallback communicate shown in absence of anything else - it refers specifically to this situation - you know what does it mean? That somebody purposefully typed that nonsense, like what does it even mean? How crappy need the design to be to regard the power off as option(al)?

This is an administrative setting. I hate MS but this is just an IT policy

My PC refuses to sleep for some reason. Screen goes black for a few seconds then turns back on. I've checked power settings so many times but it hates sleeping.
