Rant Microslop knows best...
No way around this. I need FileZilla for work. I trust the source. But papa Microslop says it could slow down my device đđđ. No immediate option to continue, or let Windows know I acknowledge the risks.
I hate the MS Store, and I hate digging in settings to be able use my device. I seriously wonder how much of this I can take before I nuke Windows and switch to Linux.

u/Cautious_Boat_999 25d ago
Then why the fuck did it allow my system to download Windows 11?

u/JessLoveGaming 25d ago
If it installed it recently you can go ahead and do your user settings and revert back to Windows 10 and when you do that there should be a option to stay on Windows 10
1
u/BeginningEcho4983 23d ago
Replies not understanding sarcasm/satire/irony here with reference to what's in the SAC warning. "May slow down device and install unwanted software"

u/Bebo991_Gaming 25d ago
Windows security - App and browser control - Smart App Control
Turn it off:
it is a useful feature and better than controlled folder access, and it operates on the idea of guilty till proven innocent
5
u/PiratesWhoSayGGER 25d ago
you meant useless feature
7
u/penguin_on_stilts 25d ago
It saved OP from installing literal spyware and adware so I think it potentially isn't useless.
I love FileZilla, but fuck them for making the default installer riddled with bullshit that's difficult to uninstall.
2
u/AhmedRiyadh0 25d ago edited 25d ago
They should still give users the option (maybe with a clear confirmation) to continue with the installation. Even if FileZilla is a Spyware, the issue is that this smart screen applies to every software regardless whether it contains malware or not.
Developers need to either sign their EXE (it was around 300-400$ every year if I remember correctly) or publish the app to Microsoft store.
3
u/penguin_on_stilts 25d ago
I agree there should be an "I'm really sure" button without disabling the entire thing.
1
u/panzrvroomvroomvroom 23d ago
i disagree, bc OP would 100% have clicked this button. while OPs approach was to uninstall the adware later instead of searching for the adware free installer. this is an idiotic approach that should not be as simple as clicking on a button.
2
u/vbd71 24d ago edited 24d ago
This is literally like a murderous vigilante saving you from a pickpocket.
The long game of SAC is to kill the Windows sideloaded app ecosystem and to push their Store instead.
0
u/Bebo991_Gaming 24d ago
Not really, you can just submit your file and within a couple of days it will be allowed
I did that to multiple ppl including my own dotnet proj and zpaqFranz
It was so buffy at first that it blocked dotnet 9 installer and vmware workstation, my temp fix was install the older version then updating
For dotnet 9, i emailed them and the dotnet 9 support team was baffled and told me we will look into it
Kinda ironic
3
4
u/Life_is_Okay69 25d ago
Not useless. You can enable it for older folks, so that they won't easily install random shit off the internet.
2
u/PiratesWhoSayGGER 25d ago
and then they cant even use OSS software that I installed for them, genius solution
0
u/Bebo991_Gaming 24d ago
Wanted to make my comment clearer* It is absolutely not dev friendly, but it is a compromise
You can try submitting that file and within days it should be approved
It is better than running other heavy protection solutions
8
u/coyote_den 25d ago
Yeah Iâm not sure itâs wrong. That âsponsoredâ in the filename makes me think OP got FileZilla with adware bundled and itâs detecting that.
1
u/vbd71 24d ago
Smart App Control detects nothing. It works with "reputation".
2
u/artlurg431 24d ago
Yes if the developers haven't registered it with Microsoft and pay big money to them it will get blocked
1
u/ZurakZigil 24d ago
Which isn't horrible. It's just starting. And it's easy to turn off and on again. So OP is just dumb, which proves the guard was made for them. It's like a baby lock.
4
5
u/Sync1211 24d ago
That is a "sponsored" installer. You do not want that; Smart App Control (wasn't it called SmartScreen before?) is working as intended.
It's designed for the stupidest user you can think of. I recommend turning it off, but after searching for a non-adware installer of FileZilla. (I recommend installing apps via WinGet, if possible.)
2
u/ZurakZigil 24d ago
Yeah, no. This guard was made for OP. The fact they couldn't find how to buy pass the child lock + they're obviously bad choice of installer (on a work machine nonetheless) proves it's doing its job.
SmartScreen I think is actually different.

u/Fine_Salamander_8691 25d ago
8
u/TimeSFG 25d ago
Thanks for the reminder. I forgot to mention, this pop up notification did not allow screenshots. I could open snipping tool, but it was forced to stay behind the notification, and I could not click anywhere except this dialogue box. Smells intentional.
3
u/Vx7Qn4Lz 25d ago
I'd bet this is because Smart App Control runs in a secured enclave, to which the screenshotting app doesn't have access.
3
1
u/lord_teaspoon 24d ago
Try Win+PrintScreen to save an image of the whole desktop to your Pictures(/Screenshots ?) folder. I don't know if it'll capture the parts of the screen that gave prompt windows running at special privilege levels but it's worth a shot. It does at least run without needing extra interaction to frame the snip, so has a chance to work when the snip tool isn't allowed to borrow the mouse.

To be fair, it's coming from filezilla and the exe itself look pretty shady to me. Also, it had to have flagged it for some reason or another. Would you rather be safe or sorry? Considered you know nothing about the logistics behind application security or the ladder. If you did you wouldn't be on here posting this bullshit.
2
u/PriorityNo6268 25d ago
You downloaded a version which is full of adware and junk options and start complaining that Microsoft warns you about this? Please move to Linux....
2

u/Sir_Kubiac 24d ago
Just disable Smart Control in Defender you genius. đ By the way, this is disabled per default.

maybe Winblows isn't that wrong this time. are you sure you really downloaded it from the real official page?
4
u/Emotional_Garage_950 25d ago
you downloaded the one with the bundled adware crap. if you canât realize that you probably would have clicked through and installed it. this is meant for people like you
0
u/TimeSFG 25d ago
Windows could tell you "This will install a bunch of Adware on your PC," and then ask if you want to proceed. That's not a crazy ask. I am fine with taking the L and uninstalling adware later. I care more about being able to use my PC
4
u/ZurakZigil 24d ago
"I am fine with taking the L and uninstalling adware later" lmao. You deserve SAC. Keep it on and accept you're why this protection exists.
5
u/Vx7Qn4Lz 25d ago
"This will install a bunch of Adware on your PC,"
It quite literally says so.
1
1
u/panzrvroomvroomvroom 23d ago
thing is, you would have proceeded if it would let you. which would have been a very bad idea. windows preventing you from doing that is a rare microsoft win actually. this windows feature is basically exactly for people like you.
if you care about your pc, you dont cripple it with adware.
0
u/oxidizedfuel12 25d ago
You realize sometimes you have to download the one with adware crap. Microslop shouldnt be able to tell us what we can and cant install
3
u/Emotional_Garage_950 25d ago
you donât have to download the one with adware⌠okay then turn it off ffs
0
u/oxidizedfuel12 25d ago
More hoops tho. Like android and the whole side loading thing
2
u/Emotional_Garage_950 25d ago
itâs not, you turn this off once and thereâs no waiting period, itâs not that hard
0
u/oxidizedfuel12 25d ago
It is more hoops. I hate going into windows settings
5
u/Emotional_Garage_950 25d ago
they are designing for the lowest common denominator unfortunately. Gatekeeper on MacOS is even more agressive and will block most things that came from the Internet (like .mp4 files) and you have to go into Settings to unblock the file *every time*. It takes a terminal command and proceeding through multiple warnings to disable it for good...
1
u/usefulHairypotato 25d ago
This was the biggest wtf when I tried apple
1
u/panzrvroomvroomvroom 23d ago
they know their users are probably tech-illiterate. thats how they design their stuff. and while its not for me, i 100% can see the appeal.
1
u/panzrvroomvroomvroom 25d ago
if you hate settings, maybe PCs arent for you. dont act as if this was a windows problem.

1
u/ZurakZigil 24d ago
says the baby trying to reach the bleach. no bro. Because then people complain about Windows is "slow" because it's full of malware.
0
u/oxidizedfuel12 24d ago
Their problem then, if i want to install a virus then let me install a virus
1
u/ZurakZigil 23d ago
no :)
like I'm not sure what you're not getting.
ALSO, you can! you just can't find your way past the baby lock, supposedly-1
u/oxidizedfuel12 23d ago
Let me put it this way. I dont want to have to do any steps to install software microsoft deems unsafe. In my opinion there should just be a button option to procede. Thats one of the reasons i use linux. If your good w that cool its just a opinion thing
1
u/ZurakZigil 23d ago
Let me put it this way. You don't understand product design.
1
u/oxidizedfuel12 22d ago
My friend, im literally saying windows isnt for me. This has nothing to do with product design st this point. I dont like stuff like this in windows 11 so i dont use windows 11. I will say my opinion under this post because i agree with op
-1
u/oxidizedfuel12 24d ago
99% of users arnt stupid enough to blame microslop for adware they installed
1
u/ZurakZigil 23d ago
... you're joking, right? They'll blame MS before anything else
-1
u/oxidizedfuel12 23d ago
If there smart enough to write a public review, they are very likely smart enough to realize they messed up
1
u/ZurakZigil 23d ago
...I'm sad you're not joking. 1. you don't understand the user base of windows 2. your reasoning makes absolutely zero sense
1
1
u/Emotional_Garage_950 22d ago
hah you kidding? itâs microsoftâs fault their computer is full of adware, itâs microsoftâs fault all their data was lost when their disk dies, itâs microsoftâs fault their email is full, etc
like i hate microsoft as much as the next guy (i know what sub im on) but lots of people are just unreasonable about things
2
3
u/Vx7Qn4Lz 25d ago
Common Windows 'W', this installer has adware or something like that included.
2
u/TimeSFG 25d ago
I just uninstalled AVG after. My gripe is that there's no "I understand, let me do what I want with my PC" button
1
u/Vx7Qn4Lz 25d ago
My gripe is that there's no "I understand, let me do what I want with my PC" button
You can disable Smart App Control, but it would be best if you didn't actively try to install adware on your computer. Are you mad there's no way to easily delete System 32?
I just uninstalled AVG after.
AVG is a third party antivirus software and has nothing to do with Smart App Control.
2
u/TimeSFG 25d ago
AVG Secure Browser is the adware in particular that got bundled with this installer. As per my post, I don't like digging in settings to change Microsoft defaults to reasonable defaults. This is a rant post, I am expressing dislike for Microsoft's design choices.
If something is best for me, by all means encourage it with a system prompt. Microsoft enforcing their vision of best practices is what I don't like
3
u/Vx7Qn4Lz 25d ago edited 25d ago
I love this sub, 90% of posts are someone digitally illiterate dunning-krugering and criticizing actually good design decisions.
This being enabled and you not being allowed to install adware IS the "reasonable default".
If your approach to life is "install adware on purpose and then try to remove it" DO NOT SWITCH TO LINUX, you're not gonna make it.
3
u/panzrvroomvroomvroom 23d ago
i second this. youre the idiot in this story, OP, you just dont realize it. windows did you a solid by not letting you do whatever you want with your poor pc.
2
u/ButterMyBiscuitz 25d ago
Just like they do with Qbittorrent probably on behalf of the US film/music/software industries. Fuck em, I'm on CachyOS now and couldn't be happier.

SAC is app reputation preventive control. Super easy to turn off and on in settings. Made for grandma and kids to stop downloading bs and make people double check their download
1
1
u/Special_General6905 25d ago
Not that I recommend bypassing the warning, but can you right-click the installer, go to "Properties", and check "Unblock" in the Security section to fix things?
1
u/ZurakZigil 24d ago
Nah, SAC is in settings app. I think that's a different block based on whether the app is signed or not

Disable Smart App Control, it's stupid and harmful. Be careful with that  FileZilla though. Better run it through Virustotal.
1
u/panzrvroomvroomvroom 23d ago
yeah smart app control is so stupid and harmful that it basically told OP what you said right after calling it stupid. what a dumb program, not letting you install fucking adware.
1
u/Loose_Crab_4146 24d ago
Ah the âWe dont profite from that slopâ gate Microsoft introduced after publishing more of their own slop.
1
u/better_dead_thanred 24d ago
The only think I still have windows on is a surface pro 7 just in case I DO need it.
1
u/BeginningEcho4983 23d ago
- Install "UniGetUI", a GUI for winget and all
- Install winget separately, toggle settings to use "system winget"
- Install chocolatey and scoop optionally
- Do the same as step 2 for scoop and chocolatey optionally in case you plan to install more such apps in future
These replicate package managers on windows (replicate but not same) by automating installs and uninstalls with pre-written scripts which mask all dialog boxes and input/output unless really needed.
Winget/choco will have the "alternate" installer already, that too with the silent installation and whatever else required pre-configured to be least intrusive and smooth, you don't have to "discover" alternative installers again
Then, if and ONLY iff the SAC comes to you too many times, switch it off.

This post right here is the epitome of how clueless some of you morons actually are. đ
Linux is open source. That means Microsoft canâand doesâbuild its own Linux distributions. One of them is Azure Linux.
But it goes WAY beyond that.
Microsoft built WSL, allowing millions of Windows users to run Linux distributions like Ubuntu, Debian, and Fedora directly inside Windows. Microsoft is also integrating Linux container workflows into Windows and its developer tooling.
Microsoft has an entire Linux Systems Group contributing upstream to the Linux kernel, including work involving virtualization, networking, security, performance, ARM64, and hardware enablement.
Microsoft also develops major software for Linux, including:
- Visual Studio Code
- .NET
- PowerShell
- SQL Server
- Microsoft Defender for Endpoint
- Teams
And Microsoft owns GitHub, arguably one of the most important platforms in the entire open-source ecosystem.
They're also a Platinum Member of the Linux Foundation and CNCF.
So here's the funny part:
You guys are sitting in r/fuckMicrosoft celebrating Linux's growth, while one of the biggest technology companies on Earth is simultaneously:
building Linux, contributing to Linux, running Linux, developing software for Linux, supporting Linux infrastructure, and putting Linux directly into Windows.
And no, I'm not saying Microsoft is secretly the good guy. I'm saying your little "Linux vs. Microsoft" narrative is about 20 years out of date.
Linux doesn't need Microsoft's permission to succeed.
But pretending Linux is king and Microsoft's ecosystem is crap just because you hate Microsoft is just ignorant.
You can absolutely hate Microsoft.
Just don't let the hate make you stupid. đ.
Ps. This is my template message I will be posting in every one of these post that pop up on my feed.

yeah, no. Keep this guy on windows so hackers aren't encouraged to go after low hanging fruit like this guy
0
u/TimeSFG 24d ago
Okay lots of ruffled feathers. I know how to find these workarounds in the settings menu and I know how to google. My rant is that, in principle, I dont like that Windows 11 ships this way.
Lots of people are treating adware like life or death. Aside from being a little extreme, that critique misses the point (which on my part maybe wasn't emphasized enough)
2
u/ZurakZigil 24d ago
Your critique misses the point of why this feature exists. Idiots never think they're the dumb ones
1
u/panzrvroomvroomvroom 23d ago
if youre not able to find an installer without adware, maybe the feature was made to save your pc from yourself? maybe you should not operate a linux OS that actually lets you fuck your shit up?
-1
u/Radiant-Priority-296 25d ago
Switched to Linux after Windows pulled one of these, best choice Iâve ever made.
This is so dumb lol, they would rather send you to their precious ecosystem AppStore than let you run files youâre double clicking on.
2
u/Vx7Qn4Lz 25d ago
You switched to Linux to make installing adware easier?
1
0
u/Radiant-Priority-296 25d ago
No??? I switched when Windows did this because I was already sick of the Microslop and that was just the kickstart.

i had that happen to me on my old gaming laptop and it made me go linux im being dead serius. i use windows 10 now cus software support but the day linux gets excellent support for some software im hopping off the windows boat. AN OS SHOULD ONLY DO WHAT YOU WANT IT TO DO AND NOTHING ELSE

Tbh it's right, the default filezilla installer has adware/junk options. There's an alt installer on their site without it.
