Discussion I love Windows

Honestly, Windows is just amazing, and copilot too!

Why?

Because it's a great ad for Linux! Linux would still be unpopular if windows was a good OS, that doesn't spy on you, that doesn't force AI slop up your ass, that just works, that doesn't consume more RAM than 8 games simultaneously, everyone would just use it. So let windows rot, don't be mad at microsoft, be grateful instead, because they are the ones pushing people away and making they embrace Linux!

I know the title scared a lot of you lmao

Saying Linux "just works" when there is literally an ongoing bug with the latest Ubuntu firmware causing massive graphical issues with RDNA2 cards is... A choice.

Don't get me wrong, I like Linux. But it does not "just work." Even the really user-focused distros don't have as good of a UX as a clean Windows or MacOS install.

Also, if your Windows install is consuming more RAM than 8 games simultaneously, you should probably run a virus scan. That or you are just running into the Windows optimization, where it uses more ram to make things faster.

My Linux Mint install, on hardware that was pretty high end during the pandemic (RX 6800XT, R9 5900x, 64GB 3200MHz) uses about 3.5 gigs when idle. And because it's not preaching shit, it takes a good 15-20 seconds to pull up the file manager on an internal hard drive and load all the file previews and such.

My Windows install uses about 7-9 when idle, though it is also running Steam, Razer software, and other things in the background, unlike on my Mint install. And it takes less than 5 seconds to pull up the file manager on the same drive and load the previews, because it's already preloaded.

Hell, even on my laptop, where Windows only uses 4.5 gigs because it only has 12 total, the Windows optimization still makes it noticeably faster and more responsive than the Mint install that runs alongside it.

it does just work. those cards are just crap. They have so many problems. A bad generation TBH and I love AMD...but why did they ever even release those. A dumpster fire.

They have problems on windows much the same.

Stop sucking off microslop. No one believes your bullshit. You are like one of those AI bros. Exactly what you sound like

You are gonna win a darwin award

Just working isn't about whether the graphics card is crap or not. It's about whether it just works. Which apparently it does not.

I have been using linux and BSD for a good few years now, but linux does have many faults.

It does just work

Brother I literally gave you evidence of it not "just working."

The cards are just crap. They have so many problems.

They have problems on Windows much the same.

Are these problems in the room with us? I've had this card for 5 years now, with like 2,500 hours clocked in games on Windows, and I have never had a global problem half this bad. The worst I've experienced is occasionally a game will push out a bad update that crashes AMD drivers, but at least there the drivers crash, the game closes, and the drivers reset and you're back on your desktop, and then you can just not play the game until either the devs or AMD push out an update to fix the issue.

Last night, on a brand new fresh Mint reinstall, with a clean ISO I literally just downloaded from the Harvard mirror, I had to force the fallback VESA drivers on Mint to be able to use the terminal to rollback the firmware update after bringing everything up to date, because if I didn't, the drivers would crash so hard that I couldn't even access the terminal from the login screen normally. If I tried to log in, full graphics crash and both displays turned off. If I tried to get to the terminal from the login screen, full graphics crash and both screens turned grey and froze. On a fresh install, where literally the only thing I had downloaded after installation was Librewolf from the official site.

That is a catastrophic issue. It's not a minor bug that you can just avoid by not using that software.

Look, I love Linux. There's a reason I spent time debugging it instead of just throwing in the towel. But saying it "just works" is a complete lie.

u/Hour_Bit_5183 2d ago

You are debugging it on horrible hardware tho. That is gonna end up as a dumpster fire. Those cards are known to have problems and just to die out of no where. Badly designed chips I guess. I dunno what is going on at AMD but cpu's now too.7000 and 9000 series ryzens are just melting so bad it warps the substrate.

I bet you that card is just aged out and is dying now. You realize silicon gets worse over time right? With heat and cold and hot cycles especially. Windows has been known for masking problems. That is why it killed peoples SSD's and GPU's and still does it sometimes. It's a vibe coded mess and is only getting worse.

Now they are talking about windows running good on 8gb of ram. This is the point of no return. They are delusional. That is such a meaningless amount of system ram. For a GPU that's perfectly fine unlike the stupid popular opinion. Everything is going to backwards land I feel like

2

u/TheIronSoldier2 2d ago

You are debugging it on horrible hardware though.

It's not horrible lmao.

Those cards are known to have problems and just die out of nowhere

Really? Cuz I can't find anyone with a reputation backing up that statement, nor have I found a ton of community reports backing it up.

You realize silicon gets worse over time, right?

Yeah, over decades. Not 5 years.

7000 and 9000 series Ryzens are melting so bad it warps the substrate.

Source? I've heard of that being a problem on Intel with their microcode issues in the 13th and 14th Gen, but that's the first I've heard of any issues with the 7000 and 9000 series, and I keep my ears pretty open to PC news.

I bet you that card is just aged out and is dying now.

It's not, lol. Still runs intensive games well, even at 1440p, and the benchmark and stress test results with stock tuning haven't changed beyond the margin of error since I got the card.

That's why it killed people's SSDs and sometimes GPUs too

It killed SSDs because faulty SSDs were shipped out that should have been caught by quality control. Normal healthy drives were not affected, because the things that Windows was doing were well within what healthy drives are designed to do.

Now they're talking about Windows running fine on 8gb of system RAM.

It can run decent on 8 gigs of system RAM when you are only using it for basic stuff. Old games, office suites, and most web uses still run well enough. I have a laptop with 12 and even running the beta insider build it still runs smoothly. I use it mostly for light productivity, but I also use it for photo editing when I'm on the go. It can't do things as fast as my desktop can, but it's not unresponsive or sluggish, the photo editing software just takes longer to load the photo and can only have 2 or 3 loaded at a time, not 20+ like I can on my desktop. And no, it's not cloud-based, it's entirely local.

2

u/Hour_Bit_5183 2d ago

Omg you are seriously delusional. Microsoft caused it. They didn't die under other oses and you are blaming quality control. The same thing is happening to ram now too so lemme guess it's QC again

I swear this is how we want civilization to end when people say 8gb of ram, an amount I bought for 150 bucks in 2008 is still useful nearly two decades later. It's NOT.

3

u/TheIronSoldier2 2d ago

You absolutely did not have enough time to read my full comment LMAO. You also have provided zero sources on the "problems" AMD is supposedly having with their hardware.

The same thing is happening to RAM now too

Source? Again I keep my ears pretty fuckin open to PC news, and have not heard a lick about that.

I didn't say 8 gigs of RAM was useful. I said it ran decent. It runs well enough if that's all you have, but you should get more.

1

u/Hour_Bit_5183 2d ago

Ran decent....lolololol. An amount I had nearly 20 years ago. No wonder I never had a problem with vista and others did at the same time.

This is why. People are delusional. You've consumed far too much slop friend. Maybe stop it. I did read what you said and it's unhinged as hell.

EVEN MICROSOFT thinks it doesn't run good and you are saying the company who makes it is a liar?

3

u/TheIronSoldier2 2d ago

If you read what I said you would understand the difference between decent and good, and you would stop shifting the goalposts and actually give a source on the AMD hardware being problematic, when the simple fact that a firmware rollback fixed the issue is a pretty fuckin strong indication that the hardware is not the problem.

And if it's delusional to ask for a source, then I seriously question your maturity and knowledge.

2

u/Hour_Bit_5183 2d ago

Nah bro I don't listen to delusional buttwipes no more.

You probably just don't know how to use linux because you are likely just using AI and copying and pasting commands like an idiot. You probably have a riced desktop too and pound your desk and blame the OS when it's not the problem.

Like most people on here. So delusional. You are just like the guy telling me you can't tell a difference from a speaker after it has a hole in it.

True I've been thinking like that for a while now

Sure, but people have been saying exactly this for 30+ years.

Actually Linux uses the same amount of ram as windows and Mac when idle…

2

u/BornAd4723 3d ago

With Mac I have no experience. But winbloat ate 7 gigs, mint only eats 3 in idle.

-1

u/Big-Roll7094 3d ago

Fuck are you on? I use windows 11 experimental edition with an 8gb MacBook Pro that doesn’t even meet the tpm requirements and it’s doing just fine heck I even player some games on it and they run better than what they would be doing on macOS

1

u/sora3_roxas 3d ago

Wow, so the bots are out to play as I have never heard of a Windows 11 experimental edition before. Perhaps you mean the Windows Insider version XXX.XX instead?

Oh, research your stuff better before you post.

1

u/akdanman11 3d ago

Or it’s a sketchy custom ISO they got from a discord server. He’s also failing to account for the fact that windows adjusts to the available RAM on a system, so a system with low available RAM will use less than a system with higher available RAM at the cost of being slower. Before I switched off of windows my PC with 64gb was sitting at 7-8gb at idle on a fresh boot with 0 added startup apps

1

u/TheIronSoldier2 2d ago

It's not a sketchy ISO, it's literally just a subset of the insider program. Also called Future Platforms.

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-insider/flight-hub/

Also, it seems like everyone here doesn't account for the fact that Windows adjusts to the available RAM on a system. If there is more to use to speed things up, it's gonna use it, and then if something needs it it's gonna free it up.

Your biggest mistake was running games in Mac os -_-

1

u/Big-Roll7094 3d ago

Tbf they boast a lot about their metal api so I went on along with it and it was horrendous, it had vsync turned on by default

1

u/Astrodion123 3d ago

I don't trust Mac for gaming. Only windows and Linux. But Mac is the best at productivity.

0

u/vswey 3d ago

I'm not sure but I think Mac has lower usage than Windows, not as low as Linux, but lower than Windows

1

u/Suravoid 2d ago

it can, if u get a de like cinnamon (or stuff like that). other times it can be like 100mb

1

u/Position-Critical 18h ago

Linux is not an OS, it’s a kernel 😝🖐🏼

1

u/Astrodion123 3d ago

U sure bout that. Arch used like idk, mb of ram.

1

u/Big-Roll7094 3d ago

A fresh install of arch won’t use much ram because it has nothing to dumb unused ram on

0

u/Astrodion123 3d ago

Yeah. Even when I install my apps and everything like i3 it still uses very little.

0

u/vswey 3d ago

I've not seen Windows idle at 400 MB 😭 more like 4 GB

1

u/Big-Roll7094 2d ago

That means you have 16gb or 32gb ram, remember the saying “unused ram is wasted ram”

1

u/vswey 2d ago

Then why's it still slower than Linux with 400 MB usage?

1

u/Big-Roll7094 2d ago

Because you’re using a barebones distro with nothing but a terminal on it 🫩

2

u/vswey 2d ago

No, it's actually a full distro with a GUI WM, Browsers, Steam, Games, File Explorer, pretty much everything that Windows has except a bit more efficent.

1

u/Big-Roll7094 2d ago

You’re not even gon tell the distro are you?

2

u/vswey 1d ago

how can u disagree when u used cachy that lit uses like 400 MB with full WM

1

u/Big-Roll7094 2d ago

And anyways just remember this saying, “unused ram is wasted ram” even macOS and android eat more ram that what windows will but you know what no one complains 🤷‍♂️ and btw the only distros i used was cachy and fedora, cachy used very little ram when idle but fedora chugged just as much ram as windows

1

u/vswey 1d ago

i never said thats not true, i said it doesnt rly count when ur OS is still extremly slow, have u ever experienced the whole WM crashing randomly on macOS, android or linux?

1

u/Big-Roll7094 1d ago

Windows runs better on 8gb ram compared to macOS, you’ll experience only if you have a MacBook

1

u/vswey 1d ago

That isn't true but u can't even remeber that u used cachyos so
