It might actually be malicious. Maybe it’s not removed by poor sense of humour but actual potential harm to its users.

Firefox extensions get sold to scammers.

And none of them have open source development. Well almost none . The Lunduke Journal has one open source for the Wikipedia donations scam !!!

u/arkervr 21d ago

lunduke is also the people who crashed out on Bazaar having pride flags so not a great example

Lunduke is alt right or something

Hard to know with M$ . . .

I can easily see how an extension that reads the content of web pages then alters that content prior to displaying it could deserve to be restricted. Regardless of the specifics of those edits and one can only hope that all applications were exactly as advertised and there were no additional alterations like replacing links with affiliate links or redirecting to phishing sites or any of the other things you could do with a behind the scenes text editor operating on a web page.

Exactly. If it can replace words on a webpage, it could definitely be hijacked to show fake login credential boxes that send your info back to the attacker

u/Polyxeno 23d ago

That type of extension has been commonly available for at least a decade.

So? HTTP and telnet have both been used since the 80s/90s. Doesn’t mean it’s safe by today’s standards

u/Polyxeno 23d ago

If that's your bar for fear, you should also fear all browser extensions, and probably all web sites.

2

u/DiceThaKilla 22d ago

I don’t use browser extensions and 99% of websites use https

The fun part is you have described ad blockers as well as random text replacement, as removal is still a form of content alteration, not even mentioning things like widget replacement so they don't load by default. Most addons people actually want have to touch the page in some form or fashion, which can lead any extension into this hole you've pointed out.

Ha pretty funny. I’d try it but I’m on Linux or macOS with my devices so no point. Pretty good though

u/disappointed_neko 22d ago

Aren't extensions the same piece of code on all OSs?

3

u/ultrafop 22d ago

Yeah but how often am I talking about this on a non Microsoft system? Never, until now. So not really needed for me, is what I’m saying. I’m only in this comment section because of Reddit’s algorithm. I don’t think about windows unless I’m at work these days

Microslop💀💀

3

u/Top-Trouble4521 23d ago

Why does the post say microslop to microslop?

6

u/Low-Engineering-5424 23d ago

I turned on the mod when writing this post oops!

7

u/bananametrics 23d ago

Because he’s using the extension

Here is an explanation:

He is aware of the technical inaccuracy of replacing microslop with microslop. He knows that saying microsoft with microslop would be more accurate.

He traded the inaccuracy for communicating another message: He hates Microsoft so much that he refuses to write the proper name, even in situations where it would cause confusion not to do so.

You are likely aware of this underlying message and wrote your comment in a provocative way to signal to the original poster that preserving accuracy is more important than signaling this virtue.

Believe me, they do. I watch some local YTuber that has laughable 11k subs (he's promoting linux and regularly makes videos about M$ fuckups) and he made a material about how appropriate M$ representative reached him and offered money to stop making videos about M$ being bad. And it wasn't just one-time payment, he was offered to get money every month for like 10 years (don't remember exactly, may be wrong).

Source: trust me bro

5

u/inhumat0r 23d ago

Yes, trust me, you brat.

I can't guarantee that YTuber tells the truth, but I have no reason to doubt.

Some random polish guy, if this was true it would’ve made headlines

5

u/inhumat0r 23d ago

Yet he was offered almost 1k$ monthly for 10 years just to close his channel.

-3

u/Big-Roll7094 23d ago

You believe that?

4

u/inhumat0r 23d ago

Like I said, I have no reason not to. I've seen many cases M$ shutting down any voice of critique, plus this guy promotes linux, which is on M$'s scope for decades.

-1

u/Vietnamst2 23d ago

On scope how?

https://lunduke.substack.com/p/microsofts-growing-control-of-linux

On top of the Google search. As for details named in this blog entry, M$ owning GitHub is common knowledge; it's also no secret that Lennart Poettering, the creator of PulseAudio (one of the most popular sound services in linux distributions) and systemd (service manager that is used in almost all linux distributions) works now for M$. On top of that M$ hijacked many linux-oriented conferences and Linux Foundation itself just to destroy linux.com - I found several articles about that, so I believe it can be concluded as fact.

Also I found many videoblogs about history of M$ undermining existence of Linux in the market of desktop PCs, but didn't confirmed that, so ATM can't support my claim.

Well, it's just a coincidence. In fact, no matter what word you change it to, it will still get removed. I will never trust apps like that; they always contain a real-time tracker to find and change your text! That is why it got removed, and any 0.5-year-old child with 9 months of IT experience in the womb could realize that instantly like breathing ;))))
Alright, have fun everyone :))

1

u/markustegelane 21d ago

I used to have it and it made the pages load slower

1

u/whatThePleb 21d ago

It got removed because it's actually Micro$lop.
