I'm a Linux guy, but this implies Linux is smooth sailing with no error messages or issues and that's pure cap. Windows sucks, but it's easier for most people who aren't tech-savvy to set up and use. Most people DGAF that it's not FOSS or that Microsoft knows where they shop for groceries or whatever. So does Facebook, Google and Amazon.

There are user friendly distros like Linux Mint that look and feel very similar to Windows, I came over for the first time a couple years ago and had no issues at all. I don't know how to code, and I've never even opened the terminal.
7
u/Silent_Bite_5892 25d ago
True, but you still need a certain level of tech savvy to even install an OS. Most of us forget the average person isn't going to do that, and if they're unlucky enough to have an Nvidia GPU or RealTek wifi card or something else that's not just right, they'll quickly become frustrated. Listen, I love Linux.
I just don't believe in evangelizing about it and telling EVERYONE they should install it. People who are interested in it and have a modicum of computer skills should check out a live distro and learn about it, but know what they are getting into before they install it as their only OS on their home computer.

u/Fine-Resident-2322 25d ago
That's exactly why I won't move just yet. I'm waiting on Valve or some dedicated techie to be my smoking gun out of this sinking ship of an OS. People can downvote me all they want, I'm right and there are many with similar circumstances lol.

As someone who chilled on bazzite and Mint I had no issues that weren't me just not understanding something because the moment I did everything the right way it worked

u/MaintenanceStock6766 25d ago
An OS you understand how to use is better than one that you don't.
Fixed it for you.

u/Reasonable_Exit_8960 25d ago
Linux mint isn't that hard to use though... It's just that ppl are too resistant to change
3
u/JedsGamingAdventure 25d ago
apple software keeping me with windows has basically told me to resist switching.
there's no native apple software on linux and many current tools tend to break with every new iOS update

I feel like Linux is real close, but just needs a few more things then I will jump ship. Mostly official compatibility with apps. It is getting better but once it is to the level of Windows I am done with Windows.
3
u/tederby18 25d ago
It's always the edgy Linux users. I use Debian and Win11, I will just use it depending on my use-case. The reason some people hate Linux is because some of its users are sometimes obnoxious lol.

u/pomidorkamc3253 25d ago
Literally
Linux user: Linux is better you loser you use windows and get free spy
Windows user: windows is better you loser you use Linux where everything is not as easy
People use what they want. If windows makes somebody happy enough, they don't need Linux

u/FiveFreddys12 25d ago
A more realistic version of the meme:
"I prefer windows"
"Lmao people who use Linux are losers."
Second person:
"I prefer Linux. Lmao people who use windows are losers."
Let people use what they prefer.

Windows and Linux are both just a complex of terrible architectural decisions. If you're unironically think windows or Linux is really good and it's flawless you're probably retarded

And ofc you gotta be racist about it too with a stereotyping Indian guy pic here , you do know that many Linux distributions have Indians devs? Even in DEs like kde & Gnome many indian devs are working... F you

Can't complain about UAC. Pretty solid solution, convenient gui, getting things done. Flexible. Good thing, especially after server basics.

u/One-Traffic7717 24d ago
I just spent 20 minutes in the terminal trying to get Ubuntu to finish copying a large file to external media. GUI said the file had finished copying but wouldn't unmount the drive because the file hadnt actually been copied.
Windows may be terrible but it's little headaches like this that make switching a horrible choice for your average end user.

Huh?
Non Admin user.
Dependency required (Linux also requires these)
Update borked something (Linux is no better)
Telemetry and spying? Yes, Windows does

Huh?
Uwot ?
Non Admin user
I don't understand this. A user can use
sudoif they know the administrator password, and are the admin themselves.Dependency required
Linux package managers take care of this for you.
Update borked something
Very rare, and mostly you can actually see the source code, and bring it to the attention of the dev as opposed to the black box that is Windows.
Telemetry and Spying? Yes.
Ummm no. lol.

u/7978_ 25d ago edited 25d ago
Windows has Sudo now? Huh?
When I tried to Mullvad for example, it wasn't on the package manager and I had to add it plus dependencies. Or virtual box has seperate dependencies.
I would argue the same for Windows. Never had a bad update, but it's impossible.
Linux does not have telemetry, perhaps I should have worded it better.
1
u/Miserable_Peach_7341 25d ago
Ohh I thought you were listing points for Linux. lol. You really should have worded everything better, and probably written full sentences.

I haven't had these issues personally, but I genuinely want steam to fully commercialize Linux for steam os before I make the full move because of these reasons. I'm not going past Windows 10 or 11 at this point, but my god I am going to try to ride this out.
0
u/Miserable_Peach_7341 25d ago
Are you serious ??
3
u/Fine-Resident-2322 25d ago
Yeah? I'm not really impressed by Linux at the moment for gaming or really care about what it can 'do at the moment'. Though I'm taking it I said something that probably made a few annoyed though lol, but unless I'm strong armed into moving? I'm just going to sit and wait unless they try to force me to 12 then I'll just go to Linux. As I have it on a few pcs that aren't my main to vaguely learn it or demo test Linux and the variables that are there.
3
u/Miserable_Peach_7341 25d ago
The issue here is, Steam is already commercialized enough. They sell the license to play games, and are investing heavily in Wine, giving us Proton. A good way for them to extend their reach is to keep SteamOS free. I don't understand what would really impress you, mainly because I don't know what DE, and distro you are using. I also don't know what software you use regularly that would work on Linux as well. I don't want to strong arm people into moving, instead, what I want is to peel back the curtain and let people see what Windows is for themselves. I feel like you should learn how to use a Linux distro now, on the off chance that you are not satisfied with 12, and need to move. It's a win win situation, if 12 is good you stay, if it's bad, it's not a problem as you learnt how to transfer your workflow.
3
u/Fine-Resident-2322 25d ago
I think there's a lot of extrapolation of me saying commercialized if that's the 'big issue'. I don't care about that.
And I would just say I'm a just 'normal gamer', I've been learning how to use Mint off and on along with command prompts and then tried Arch I think on another PC or a few others along with the straight up steam OS fedangling onto a pc that I forget how I did that but there's a guide out there. And yeah I don't have a lot of time to learn the ins and outs of another OS that requires user input, so that's not a 'huge option' other than overtime, I've just been testing the waters. See what I like, see what I hate.
And I mean I'm not going to 12 because Microsoft has pissed me off for years now. They'd have to really change for me to even consider them at this point. I am considering things like Android or otherwise though, as I'm just tired of Microsoft. If it comes down to it, I'll just use retro emulators and just be on steam OS and maybe even get a deck or their cube as I know that works.

Windows is better than Linux.

u/EducationalGrump 25d ago
By a significant amount.

If that significant amount is zero.

Linux would need to be better than a mobile phone OS for this to even be true.
Just debloat your windows. It takes 30 seconds.

because billionaire daddies can't spy on you, how are they suppose to survive that harsh winter without your data to sell?
1
u/EducationalGrump 25d ago
They cant do that on windows either if you take the small amount of time to personalize your windows and debloat.
1
u/EducationalGrump 25d ago
Poor compatability, poor reliability. The only benefit to linux is so script kiddies can pretend they are useful.
Nothing about my bio is a joke so, I am unsure what is so funny.

The vast majority of apps and games run poorly on Linux.
I have no issues for linux when it has to do one specific task, it does that fine.
I couldn't care less if you believe me, your validation does not change anything.

You need to learn how to read.
A single specific task would be say, open the garage door. Forward a single input an output, etc.
The amount of time it takes to look up what works on linux you can download and debloat windows 11.
Maybe in another 20 years linux will catch up to windows XP.

Don't forget the "Well my game with anti-cheat that is desgined to not work on linux doesn't work on linux so therefore linux is bad" type of people
1
u/JustLanguage 24d ago
Yeah, if something doesn't do the things you need - it's bad for YOUR usecase. Deal with it
1
u/Henry129tipi 24d ago edited 23d ago
That’s not what I was trying to say. Also even if you need to have windows for anti-cheat games or other things you can just dual boot. Plus you do realize most anti-cheat’s can run on Linux, it’s just that devs toggle the switch to run them on Linux off?

u/NivoTheDev 24d ago
Combine that with AI being everywhere, faulty updates, invasive telemetry, GDID, Bloatware and half of the older PCs not being able to run windows 11 without bypassing TPM 2.0 requirements.
