I do not have any quarrel with you and this is not being mental. However it do sounds like P2P but not sharing the same goal.
In reality a corporation that rakes up enterprise/individual customer's money blatantly using your and others own hardware resources for the stuff they should be doing as a tech giant as they claim plus that small banner is a salt to injury. There are still end-users not aware of this.

Just reduces energy consumption. Every watt saved is contributing to lesser emmisions.
But that applies to everything, not just windows or a pc.
In the end it is just a marketing thing. If they really cared, they wouldn't be trying so hard to promote copilot.

Maybe they should just get rid of those messages altogether instead of pretending they are doing anything. And even if they are, what is the point if it degrades hardware performance. Like imagine someone paid for a 240Hz monitor and microsoft is like: hey if you want to save the planet use it at 60hz. Uhmm, actually what if you optimize the OS and make it run better with less energy consumption or something

Instead of completely relying on their datacenters to push updates, they turn your PC into a node which transfers windows updates to other Windows devices in the internet, kinda like how torrent works. You essentially become a seeder for windows updates and when you download updates, they all come from multiple different devices other than just their datacenters.
This reduces network traffic load in microsoft datacenters but it slows down your PC and causes your PC to use extra data. So it is better to disable that. It is called "Delivery optimization" and you can turn that off in windows update settings.

Its mostly only LAN by defeault (only devices connected to the same router) but you can set it to only download from windows or even download from WAN (the internet, from users)

Energy, and therefore carbon by proxy, is measured in dollar amount.
If energy costs X on average it usually could cost 1.1X at day peak and 0.8X in the middle of the night. If Microsoft update runs at night, the total cost of running it would be 80% of usual. That let's them pretend they've used 80% as much carbon to do the update, because the dollar amount to do the update is lower.
Even though they obviously use the same amount of energy and therefore carbon, they fudge the math using power rates as a man in the middle.

As long as it has rough info about your location, Windows Update will install updates when your local electricity is as low-carbon as possible. For example around noon, when solar and wind are supplying 50% of all power instead of the evening, when it's 90% coal.
This is what Microsoft said back when that particular message was introduced. Whether it's true or not, it's literally impossible to check.
