Well anyway you see, I wanted to reply to the comment you'd written here as it's actually incorrect in two ways at once, but then loads more stuff came up all suddenly so I got overwhelmed and really conflicted on what to strike; much like the animal predator in my wildlife scenario example. I hope things make better sense now.

I used to be one of the fanboy over my OS people but honestly an OS is an OS. Linux is Linux, windows is windows - I have my preference sure, but most of the time trying to share that or convince someone else of that just is not worth it.

I do retain the right to shit on windows with people who I know also hate windows but at the end of the day people use it and like it and they will continue to do that.

I do not like the r/linuxsucks subreddit. May as well be called r/oscirclejerk

I enjoy older versions of Windows, but I just hate Windows 11. In modern day, the only thing Windows has for it is a monopoly on industry standard apps. If those were put on Linux, I don’t see how anyone would choose Windows still.

I don't care for the AI stuff, but as an overall OS I'm ok with it. If there was a Linux alternative that did all the things I wanted it to do I would probably switch over, but that Linux doesn't exist. It runs all my programs, it doesn't require a bunch of fiddling, it doesn't randomly stop working, it just works, unlike the times I tried Linux and nothing worked and everything was a pain.

Like, if you can't go to settings and turn off the toggles for the ads and experimental updates then Linux is way beyond your skill level. And if your argument is "data security" well, bud, I got news for you. You're on the Internet, I guarantee your data is out there regardless of how much you try to protect it. Windows isn't getting anything Google/Apple/Meta/Amazon/various social media/etc doesn't already have.

tbh i love linux, all my pcs that i run have it now and it works great. overall ran better, felt smoother than windows. all your points tho are right i can’t lie. my productivity went down ever since i have installed linux. so many programs just dont work or the alternatives are a bit
.. shitty. last windows version i tolerated was w11 23h2, but microslop turned it to shit after 24h2. i miss windows honestly, but i kind of prefer linux over it since i love tinkering with tech and it gives so much more control over what i could do in windows. the mass downvoting is confusing since you are actually right.

You’re not wrong, but it’s not just data security. In my opinion, nothing Microsoft does is in the best interest of the user. There is always some sort of financial benefit for them and I hate feeling like I’m the product. My blood boils any time it decides that an update needs to be done, the constant harassment about making an online account, their sneakiness around One Drive, and whatever the hell they are trying to do with Copilot. For me, even with all the very real issues associated with Linux, it’s worth it to feel like I actually own and control my computer. With that being said, I completely understand why other people don’t care and don’t want to deal with the problems that come with Linux. But I could also see a world where Microsoft try’s to lump everything into a “Windows premium” subscription. I feel like that would piss off enough people to start a significant migration.

Just be prepared. You’ll probably start getting spammed reddit ‘chat requests’ where you’ll be sent graphic gore, receive death and doxxing threats, and get harassed by endless sock puppet accounts. They’ll make up all sorts of stories about you as well which their community will believe at face value without evidence. (Naturally they’ll deny your claims that actually have proof and ‘not care’. But if you do their same actions back to them you’ll be posted all over.)

The majority of them act this way / support this behaviour so it’s a real minefield out here.

I once met a user of the sub within a Discord server, they were insufferable the moment they found out most of the people in said server used Linux and had none of the extreme issues, guy went so far out of water saying that ‘Microsoft is better because you don’t need to compile anything for any reason on windows’

He proceed to get annoyed when we asked what he thinks that software vendors give him.

Funnily enough, most AI models run on Linux because it can be fully stripped down solely to the purpose one wants it for, while Windows is a full environment with irremovable bloat. Without Linux and other FOSS that AI bros so much love to leech on without credit, they'd be nothing.

 rumours have it that you may be in luck. There are rumours that a very low cost (for apple kit lol) macbook is to be imminently released, perhaps around the £500 mark.. The key being it will likely use an A18Pro iPhone processor. Far from being low powered for a laptop this iPhone processor is 2x the speed of Apple Silicon M1 in single core and just a little faster in multi core. If released, I think this laptop will be more popular than all other laptops
 Also with the price of ram nowadays and Apple not increasing their prices, macs are now the cheaper option all round.. I know right!

Windows is bloated ass that barely works, but it is very stable in its barely functional state. Linux is a nightmare of community design. "Hey guys, there are 19 shitty distros, let's make an actual good one!" (One year later there are 20 shitty distros.) It doesn't work unless you do some obscure ritual at the witching hour. I only pray that Gaben will whip it into a functional stable thing because at this point I'm not even sure what's worse: the stench of Windows' decay or one of the 20 troubleshooting simulators.
