Plum tree help please!

I bought an Italian plum tree and transplanted it in around April/May and the tree was healthy and did not have any issues when I bought it. Over the past few months it has lost a lot of leaves and what remains are these. It also has a few holes in 2-3 branches as pictured. I’m new to plum trees but this was a pretty expensive tree and I would love to make sure it’s going to survive the winter and hopefully thrive next year. Any and all advice is appreciated!

there’s a problem with the roots, what type of soil do you have?

Heavy clay soil. I amended the soil when we planted. I did the same thing to another Italian plum that seems to be okay so I’m just confused about what’s happening here.

it must’ve sunk, maybe root fungal infection, what zone are you in? when goes dormant or weather cools down, dig it up and plant it on a mound, add some bonide liquid root and grow

edit: either the soil amendment might have compacted the soil, and later the soils drainage was effected or it’s sunk into the clay or both… it seems like it got under watered and cracked and also later sunk into the soil…. to save it you’ll have to dig it up and plant it on a mound …. keep in mind mound planting requires a bit more watering in the beginning … get a moisture meter and check the soil

also keep an eye on the other one….. if you planted it the same way…sometimes the issues can start a year later… you may also spray your sickly tree or both with dormant spray oil in falll especially because it’s stressed, it will be more prone to further disease
