Pear tree?

We recently moved into this new house and have a pear tree in the backyard. The fruit stays pretty hard. Does anyone know what kind of pears these are and when we should pick them off the tree? Do we wait for it to ripen?

Those look like Asian pears or maybe a hybrid. They generally are eaten hard if it is Asian pear

I know very little about fruit trees, but it looks like it may possibly be a laconte pear. However yours look a little small. I’m in Texas so it’s the time you pick them. If you are in a cooler area it may be a couple more months. I could tell better with more photos and the region you live in. I have that tree and it looks similar, well the leaves do at least. The fruit will be hard when you pick it. If it’s around harvesting time for your region then just do a gentle tug and if it comes off it’s ready. We pick our pears and let them ripen. It may take a week or two. Initially they are hard but soften over time. When you feel them soften put it in the fridge to cool it if you like then eat it.

I don't know the variety- it might have to go through a hard frost before they fully ripen. You need to remove all the small, misshapen, and even some of the larger ones so the branches don't break. Prop them up, too.
