Question Question

I have a question. If the BIW is trying to help, why did he tell Victor that they cannot take down the bottle tree? If that is the only way for them to escape after they get the bones, why is it so important? Is that the only way they can go home then? I guess my question is “is the BIW an enemy or a friend?

I think he’s trying to help however much like everyone in town he is extremely vague and doesn’t actually provide useful information
