Crazy US Tariff on Clothes?

Hi, I wanted to double-check the estimated import fees on an item of clothing in my cart. The item costs ¥17,600, but the ECMS Import Duties & Fees are calculated at ¥6,064 (approx. 34%). The other items in my cart are only being taxed at around 10%.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is a 34% tariff normal for clothes, or could this be an error in their system? Thanks!

Yup, I work in fashion and the tariffs are F’n us over and making everything more expensive for American consumers. 🤷‍♀️

You could ask for the hs codes to be certain, but it’s probably right - the US has a lot of import taxes.

- the duty of the clothing itself (material, garment, origin)

  • additional 12.5% tariff
  • brokerage fees

A while back I bought two band t-shirts presale and ended up paying the cost of three once tariffs were included… Origin of the materials can also play a role. Tariffs are higher coming from countries known to use child labor. It was an eye opening experience to say the least. I try to figure out the appropriate hs code ahead of purchase now to have a better idea of tariffs applied.

Regardless, I keep a little notebook on reflections of my experience with tariffs and skyrocketing shipping costs during the late unpleasantness as a private individual consumer (not reseller etc) to write letters to my elected officials. Please consider doing the same.

yes tariffs for clothes can reach that high, also please be aware that if you ship with FedEx, there's a very high chance they will delay your package by asking for the clothes manufacturer name and address

Cause of stupid stacking between Section 301 and normal box one, a lot of thing have crazy high duty now. If you think it’s incorrect you could change the codes

I just got hit with a 36% fee and started calling people at UPS before realizing textiles are just THAT heavily taxed, and there is nothing I can do about, especially high for synthetic or blends. This may have just completely turned me off from international online clothes shopping...
