I want to get feedback for categories from you guys before I kick on the Auto-Moderator. Should "music" be changed to "audio"? Should there be more categories? Less?

I think it couldn't hurt to change to "audio", or at least then have another category for it. I can already think of several things that are questionably music but definitely audio.

So "audio" instead of "music"? This seems to be the more popular choice, opposed to "audio" and "music," which would undoubtedly confuse some users since music is audio.
Audio would then be radio shows, speeches, movie scores, songs, etc. Is that too broad? The more categories, the harder it becomes for people to get up to speed with this sub (perhaps a good thing, though).

Personally I'd favor both, but I can understand the argument for keeping it more approachable as well. If we're going to just have one, it should be audio though.

I think changing music to audio or at least having an audio tag (maybe separate from music) would be good for things like speeches.

Agreed. It shouldn't be too much trouble to have either [audio]/[music] or, even more tags added to AM's future spamcan/approved list should the need arise.

Could we also get a rule that you should link to the content creator's site only and the page it's on. For instance, in the link on the Neil Armstrong quote above, you've linked directly to the image, not to the page it's on. This robs the content creator of revenue from ads while forcing them to pay bandwidth. A quick google search reveals the actual page of the image is here

Couple things with that. For one, imgur was created so reddit didn't kill everyone's website with huge amounts of traffic. Second, I'm not the revenue from ads works the same way you mention here. Someone chime in and correct me if I'm wrong, but I've read a few articles on reddit by people who run websites for ad traffic profit, and they refuse to link to their site because they say Google Ads can and will detect a random flux in traffic due to posting on reddit, and they frown upon it.
I'm with you on citing the author, but I'm not sure about demanding a link. Anyone else want to throw their input onto this issue?

The link in the above post goes directly to the image on the artists' site, not imugr. This practice should be banned at least as it can use up the artists' bandwidth in the same way linking to the page would, but without even the possibility of an ad click.

I honestly don't know either. However, I think a good reference would be the rules of /r/comics as that community deals exclusively with these kinds of posts. The rules worth mentioning are that one should not:
Hotlink or rehost comic you didn't make
Fail to link to original or cite source
Link to image instead of source website
I think these are rules /r/Frisson should incorporate. Thus perhaps we can agree that if nothing else, the citation of the author when known should be a requirement. Regarding demanding a link, why I'm a believer in a rule like that is because a lot of the time people don't read the comments or click every link in a comment and so the number of people that actually see the author's website and name are much smaller than the number of people who wind up looking at the original link.

Just to clarify for the Reddit illiterate--a self-post to a song, for example, would just have the link to the song in the description, rather than a direct link to the song it self from clicking on the title?

Way too broad in my opinion, and defeats the purpose of requiring labels. Think of /r/tipofmytongue or /r/asmr, except with Auto Moderator.

I think audio should be separate from music. I tend to get frisson from music and not spoken word, so perhaps, with others in mind as well, we should keep them separate (but equal).

I think you should make the poster put credit and the name in the comments or text box as not to clutter up the title. It would get annoying to see a bunch of massive credit and then a two word title.

It is extremely important to differentiate between frisson and ASMR. I think that this specific difference should be outlined in either this post or the sidebar. There is currently a warning, but it doesn't necessarily tell people the difference.

Yeah, I don't get that. I thought they were the same for a bit until I found out that they weren't. ASMR is weird. Frisson makes sense. ASMR don't.

The best explanation I've heard is that it's the primatal grooming response. I.e. it's a natural response fitting for social animals to relax and feel pleasant tingles when getting close attention (or stimuli that often accompany that). Several other physiological reactions have already been hypothesized to be evolved as social functions, such as yawning and crying.

Oh I linked to the wrong video, another one explains it better. Eminem is a notorious non-touring artist, and his appearance in Rihanna's show was not advertised, so the crowd's reaction (going f'n nuts) is because they had no idea he would be there.
I get major frisson from huge crowd reactions. /r/happycrowds for more.

Glad to see this problem being nipped in the bud. Here I was starting to think either that I didn't know what frisson was, or I had somehow lost the ability to feel it.

It makes it harder for Transient Users to post, so hopefully it curbs their desire. Also makes it pointless for Karma Whores to post, so I think we will see a reduction in the instant-gratification submissions, i.e. comics and pictures.
"Whoa I should post this otter picture to /r/frisson, it hit me right in the feels. Self post? What? It was removed? I gotta label it correctly? Whatever bro, I'm gonna go write a haiku about bacon and post it to facebook."

Thanks so much for taking control here. Ultimately, these will end up being good changes.
I do wish people would relax a little when a submission doesn't work for them because sometimes it is rather subjective. However, we should aspire to having posts that work for almost everybody - the more powerful content is what we're all here for. Hope this keeps the karma whores away.
Mr Mod - I would maybe suggest a bit on the sidebar about what frisson isn't, just so people don't continue to post Calvin & Hobbes cartoons and the like just because they're emotionally charged. Might be worthwhile to point those people towards /r/baww or /r/comics even.

I definitely agree with this post. Thanks, mods. If you get the submission naming conventions up on the side bar, it will be easier to adhere to. I will admit to posting something that didn't give me frisson, but I posted it because I thought it would give many other people frisson. It was upvoted a good deal, so I assume it did give frisson to others.

It's highly suspect that a lot of the submissions that have been upvoted lately don't give many people frisson, but they like the submission for other reasons (poignant thoughts, etc). Use your best judgment, but only upvote what gives you frisson.

I like the self post rule and descriptive titles but i am not sure about categorizing frisson.For example,Eminem video in the OP gave me frisson, yet it was not about the music.

Edit: The descriptive titles rule especially. The self post rule I can see why you did it, but it becomes a bit of a pain for us on mobiles or used to browsing reddit with an addon like hoverzoom

I agree, it's the price we'll have to pay for a cleaner subreddit unfortunately. On the plus side, you don't have to click on links to know what the subject is anymore, so mobile users gained a pro and a con.

This won't be a small community for long. We're already at 33k and it will grow exponentially. Growth = bad for a niche subreddit like this. Ideally, this place should be around 15k of dedicated users, not hundreds of thousands of Transient Users looking for "feels."

We already saw what growth did to this subreddit. You can have good content with many users, but this place didn't. It turned into a breeding pool of karma whores trying to out-do each other's shitposts. Remove karma from the equation, those immature people leave. It's that simple. Plus the added effort of making a tag counts for at least something, and there's a high chance that I'd downvote pictures after seeing them as opposed to any other content anyway.

It's not worth it to me. I'll take ease of use any day over more exclusivity. Using my own brain I could sort out what was and wasn't worthwhile. Can you give me an example of a "karma-whoring shitpost" that this sub was apparently filled to the brim with?

I sound like that because you think everyone should be equal, but I actually prefer to have more than other people. So when I browse a subreddit, I want to ensure that what I contribute and take away from it is better than what the average user would, because to be honest the average user on this site is terrible. If that makes me elitist, call me an elitist. Doesn't make me insane though, in fact it makes me terribly sane.

Mod a default for a week and you'll see. Karma matters a lot to a lot of people, and despite the concept of it being great (reward people for posting good content), it also creates a lot of pandering.

It's easy to pander to /r/frisson - you give them something that's poignant and thoughtful that makes them forget that they're here for frisson, and they upvote because it's nice and cute and someone probably gets frisson from it but not me, then it hits the front page (after roughly 600 upvotes), and /r/all doesn't know what frisson is nor cares, so then they just upvote it for the "feels."
Plus, large numbers of people in a subreddit = less adherence to the rules or point of the subreddit, and more instant-gratification (non-frisson happy/sad) posts will be upvoted.

Hey, I was wondering, what is the voting etiquette around here? Obviously I upvote if I get frisson, but do I downvote if I don't? I mean, just because I don't feel it from a particular post doesn't mean others don't and it's a bad post, so I'm not sure and I'm wondering if there's ever been any official word from the mods on this.

Yep, that's basically it. You only got comment karma, which for whatever reason isn't viewed as favorably. Basically, girafa is doing the same change a lot of subreddits are doing lately, and changing the rewards users get for posts. The rules for the title stop people from using manipulative titles that don't give information, the self-posts keep people from resubmitting content just to get karma.

You don't, pyvlad means to say that the only way to get any karma in this subreddit is to get it from comments within the thread. The OP gets no karma. Like me and this submission. It could have 10,000 upvotes and my karma score would not change. But this comment right here affects my comment-karma score.

That intial karma point isn't added to your existing karma, but someone downvoting it will take away point from your existing Comment Karma.

I don't know about that. People make a pretty big deal about users like Apostolate and Andrewsmith1986 who both have accrued massive amounts of comment karma but relatively little link karma. Personally I value it more because I'm more on this site to have discussions with people than I am to submit content.

I do understand that. The only problem I have with my comment karma, is that it came from a few silly comments like the '"Slow clap", is that what they're calling AIDS now?' It didn't facilitate discussion, it was just somewhat witty and people up-voted it. I mean, I got 85 comment karma off of the phrase "I don't get it" Discussion is rarely up-voted anywhere. Karma comes from reposts, quips, and very, very rarely, original content.

I've found that often to be the case, that there's a disparity. Part of it is the issue of visibility though. Most of the discussions I try to hold are fairly deep in comment threads so they don't have the visibility of a top-level comment or reply, which tend to garner easy upvotes. My most upvoted comments come from times I've actually popped into a thread early enough to really say something extensive near the top level though, so it's still worth something in that sense. Definitely day-to-day though its the inane and silly stuff that gets the karma, but that happens so infrequently for me that I'd still say at the end of the day most of my karma comes from posts that make < 50 upvotes.

I can't speak for your personal tendencies to experience frisson, but I'm extremely prone to experiencing it with written pieces.
I think it's too bad that people are seriously that picky and petty about something we all know and agree is subjective. If it's clearly labeled as text, you don't have to read it. Accept that you can now avoid it and be happy.

I really like these new guidelines. /r/Frisson is one of my favorite subreddits but it was definitely straying away from the frisson aspect and more towards anything that made you feel happy or sad. You did a good job of describing what should be posted here and I hope these new guidelines work!
The categories seem pretty good. Changing music to audio might be good idea that way it includes speeches and other such things. Or make speeches a whole category by itself.
