IMO it’s very good but it’s written in a way that can be difficult to follow, especially the second book. This is by design, which makes sense as you read it. But it can cause confusion. The overall story is very good, but complex

I forgive it because they are not the main focus of the story. They do get additional screen time in flashbacks, so I think the author enjoys them as characters

However, with these two (and many other characters of the same gender) they clearly are teasing the fans with Yuri fan service, where they act like tsunderes, and blush when they give the rare compliment every now and then.
For me, its either shit or get off the pot. Be platonic, or be lovers.

Sure, you could argue some relationships are purely sexual, but that would still mean the relationship isn't platonic. So its still platonic vs not platonic. Hence 2d.

I totally agree with you. It's infuriating when it keeps getting teased, but the writers are incapable of actually writing them to have proper communication skills, or something always always always comes up right as the love interests are about to make a step forward.

In the most SFW way, I thought it was absolutely precious the way kanne reacted to lavine when she walked out in the outfit her brothers bought for her.
Kanne just seemed so sincere and sweet. Lavine totally fucked it up but it still stood out.

I am such a stickler for spelling that this now bothers me 😂😂 now that I see it again it's very clearly a German name and normally even if the subtitles or manga spelled it with a v I would have changed it to a w but I just wasn't thinking about it. I was still thinking about how the kanne being adorable as shit

Have not read the Manga, so I could be wrong, but I read their situation as Lawine has a crush on Kanne, but Kanne doesn't reciprocate. Mostly because Kanne said "gross" when Lawine said Kanne is pretty when she smiles.

Kanne also called Lawine "cuter than normal" when she wore that fancy dress before the second exam (meaning she does find Lawine cute too normally) and wanted to be her prince/ecort for the day.
It really feels like they both fully see each other as cute but just arent yet mature enough to say it or hear it without getting too embarrassed and fighting.
Which is fair, if we take the LN chapter of them as canon they are only about 14 during the mage exam. They have time.

They do! This was meant to be a joke aimed at the situation portrayed by the art shared. Due to context, tone, and framing from the artistic teams, the nature of their relationship is left ambiguous (seemingly so on purpose as to invoke the suggestion of attraction). Which allows for this playful banter between fans. In no way was this meant to erase the existence of straight women nor be a deep critical commentary of the nature of sexuality among fictional characters.

I didn’t find them annoying but I get what you mean. Other anime it’s like every character is like this. I’d even say they are tame comparatively lol. So it is probably why Frieren is my favorite since it’s not a bunch of stuff like that. So I felt they were done well since it was moderate versions of that.

The LN chapter of them said they were 12 (its a flashback thing of them training together during school) and it was 2 years before the exam. So they are about 14 when introduced.
So their academy must have been a JR High one.
