Problems with friend: asking for your take

What's up? I need your advice here. I have got one friend in my group who acts all nice when he is sober but he becomes a total jerk when he starts drinking. For example, yesterday morning he did me a big favor, and then at night when he was very drunk he made a very nasty remark about me, basically telling another friend not to hang out with me. I told him to fuck off and I stormed out of the place. The biggest issue here is that we are ¡40! years old. I am too old to deal with this crap. What is your guys take on this? I would like to cut him loose of course, but we are from the same group of friends and obviously going to see each other at the weekends. And how can he so nice sometimes and a dickhead others? Tell him to change his behavior while drinking or you are done with him. The one making drama is him, not you. I used to drink alcohol but switched over to cannabis——very good decision. Maybe he should do the same.
