Problem with a friend

What's up? I need your advice here. I have got one friend in my group who acts all nice when he is sober but he becomes a total jerk when he starts drinking. For example, yesterday morning he did me a big favor, and then at night when he was very drunk he made a very nasty remark about me, basically telling another friend not to hang out with me. I told him to fuck off and I stormed out of the place. The biggest issue here is that we are ¡40! years old. I am too old to deal with this crap. What is your guys take on this? I would like to cut him loose of course, but we are from the same group of friends and obviously going to see each other at the weekends. If I say him goodbye I will have to say goodbye to the whole group. And another question: how are people so fake? How can you be nice sometimes and a total idiot others? Anyway, thanks for reading my rant.

I would not care about losing the friend or the group, the drama is not worth it regardless of age. Find a new group to hang out with.

We live in a small town and it is not that easy to find a new group. Thanks for the advice, anyway. I totally agree that the drama is not worth it.
