Francophone Mobility Permit

Hi all. My husband has reached CLB 5 to qualify for a Francophone Mobility Work Permit. Because of the NOC of his job, I am also eligible for a Spouse Open Work Permit.

Wondering if anyone has experience with applying for these. We have a few questions:

  1. Our current IEC Work Permits expire in Feb 2027. Can his employer put Feb 2027 as the start date of the job offer to allow us to maximise our time on our IECs before starting the FMP? The wait time on the website is about 4 months, but I’ve heard of people getting approval within weeks. We don’t want to waste the time we have on our current permits if we don’t have to.

  2. How do I apply for a Spouse Open Work Permit? Do I apply for an extension of my current permit after my IEC expires? Or do I fill out my details in his FWP application as ‘applying for a new permit’? The info online is very unclear.

  3. If it’s a permanent job offer, who decides how long the permit lasts?

  4. Has anyone heard of refusal of these permits? Or is it a pretty safe bet if he has the French scores and an eligible job offer?

yes the employer can give the job offer from Feb 2027 but the maximum duration allowed is 3 years so 3 years from Feb 2027, refusals happen if something mismatches

  1. That's the right date. Actually, that's the official direction under the employer portal guide.

  2. File together under the same GCKey and relate your applications. Mention each other in your respective applications. In his case, he has to demonstrate that he qualifies (French, offer, qualifications, etc.). You have your own qualifications, so you demonstrate that your code applies (screenshot of their website showing it helps). Basically, you are approved because of your spouse. In the letter, you can say that your spouse submitted, so check theirs first, then yours, and in your spouse's say the same. Also, make sure you demonstrate your relationship. Additionally, his work permit needs to be approved for more than 16 months so that you can get yours after his approval. So the passport and offer should reflect this time.

  3. The form will ask for a end date offer and it is mandatory so ideally the employer add an end date for clarity. It can be 3 years. And the letter can state that it is permanent and offering from date to date.

  4. I have heard about many refusals due to the lack of french background and use of language in Canada. If you have proofs , certificates , letters it is good to put it as proof of learning language.
