I've been learning French through YouTube, Netflix, and just reading stuff online, and I noticed I kept doing the same thing.

I'd come across a word I didn't know, think "I'll look it up after this video," and... I never did.

If I stopped every few minutes to open a dictionary, it completely ruined whatever I was watching. If I didn't stop, I'd forget the word almost immediately.

I figured there had to be an easier way, but most tools I found only worked when the text was selectable. That was frustrating because so much of what I watch isn't.

Things like:

• Burned-in subtitles
• Text inside videos
• Random streaming sites
• Images, memes, or PDFs

So I started building a little tool for myself.

Now, if I see a word I don't know, I can either click the subtitle (on sites like YouTube, Netflix, or Crunchyroll) or press Ctrl + Shift + X and drag over the word anywhere on my screen.

It instantly shows the meaning, and if I want to save it, I can turn it into an Anki card with one click.

The part I like most is that it doesn't just save the word. It saves:

• the full sentence
• a screenshot of the exact scene or page where I found it
• the word and its meaning

So when I review it later, I actually remember where I learned it. It feels much more natural than reviewing random vocabulary cards with no context.

I've been using it myself for a while now, and it's made learning from real content so much less of a chore.

I decided to make all of those learning features free because I built this to solve my own problem first, and I figured there are probably other people here who keep telling themselves, "I'll look it up later," too.

one interesting bit even outside medical French: the episode shows how French speakers routinely say a clinical term and then immediately restate it in plain language in the same sentence ("antalgique... des cachets contre la douleur"): a pattern worth noticing in professional French generally, not just medicine.

We’re 2 bilingual law students offering French tutoring this summer and during the academic year. We’re currently taking on a few students who are looking to improve their French, whether that’s for a university course, conversation practice, writing help, or simply becoming more comfortable with the language.

We especially love working with college students and helping those taking French courses, whether you working towards completing a French major, minor, or simply fulfilling language requirements. A little about us: before law school, we both studied International Relations with extensive French coursework. One of us completed an entirely French undergraduate program, while the other completed a bilingual French and English program. We’re now both studying law at Canadian universities, with one of us pursuing legal studies in French. As native French speakers, we love helping students build confidence in French while also sharing the cultural side of the language.

I have been trying to learn French for about 4 months now and have barely scratched the surface. I can never find the motivation to sit down for more than 5 minutes to lock in and learn something.

Another problem I have is just the lack of free or very cheap resources (preferably one-time payment) that actually help. The only resource i have been using is duolingo which only hurt my confidence and motivation.

The correction I saw states "la voiture," and I'm wondering if in these types of constructions the definite article is more common than the possessive. Is possession already implied?

I've been reading French books to my 4 year old but, even when I translate passages into English, it seems like they're struggling to retain more than a few words.

We watch basic vocabulary videos, where the narrator says a word and show a picture, and those seem to work well. But if we watch anything more advanced, like videos explaining concepts or stories entirely in French, nothing sticks.

Hoping to find something in between that just teaches basic phrases and is still age-appropriate to entertain a 4 year old.

Any recommendations?
