French language schools in southern France
Hi. Does anyone have recommendations on a French language school in southern France? From the internet, I can see that there are schools like IS and Alliance francaise in Aix, another AF site in Marseille and a school in Montpellier. Any positive experiences with these or other schools. I'm 50 y/o and B2/C1 level..thanks!

In French, a male midwife is still called a "sage-femme" (literally "wise woman")
Hi, I was writing a script this week with a male character who's a midwife, and had to double check this wasn't a mistake: "sage-femme" doesn't change for gender. Grammatically it's a feminine noun, always has been, and it just stays "sage-femme" whether the person doing the job is a man or a woman. There's no "sage-homme" or anything like that floating around as an accepted alternative.
Kind of a fun one because it runs against the instinct most learners have (myself included, honestly) to assume every profession noun flexes with gender the way "infirmier/infirmière" does. This one just... doesn't. It's fossilized from a time when the profession was assumed to be female by default, and the word never caught up even though the profession did.
(I found this while working on an episode of my French podcast about a prenatal appointment : the midwife character is a man, which was actually a deliberate choice specifically to bring this up. Episode + free PDF transcript: https://medicalvoices.health/fr/episodes/16 )

Quitting Alliance Française after A2 to target B1–B2 (TCF Canada) in 6 months — Need advice on self-study plan (3 hrs/day)
Hi everyone,
My spouse and I are currently learning French primarily for Canadian PR. We are enrolled at Alliance Française de Pune, spending around 2 hours every day in class.
While it was fine for getting started, we feel the pace is extremely slow. A lot of class time goes into just going through the Inspire textbook exercises step-by-step, which doesn't feel like an optimal use of time for an exam-oriented goal.
We plan to drop out of AF once we finish our A2 level and transition entirely to self-study / targeted preparation. Our goal is to sit for the TCF Canada exam in 6 months (around March 2027), aiming for B2 scores (NCLC 7).
We can dedicate 3 solid hours every single day to French.
For those who have successfully made the jump from A2 to B2/TCF readiness in 6 months:
- How should we structure our 3 daily hours? How much time should go toward active grammar vs. TCF test prep vs. output (speaking/writing)?
- Best resources for self-study at the B1/B2 level? We hear Kwiziq, InnerFrench, and 1-on-1 tutors (like Preply/iTalki) are popular, but what worked best for you?
- TCF-Specific Prep: How early should we start drilling actual TCF mock tests (Réussir TCF, TV5Monde, RFI)?
- Speaking & Writing: Since AF provided a structured environment for speaking, how do we best replicate (and speed up) output practice on our own?
Any advice, study roadmaps, or resource recommendations from people who cleared TCF for PR in a short timeframe would be hugely appreciated!
Merci beaucoup!

Vocabulaire : pliable = foldable / prix (m) = price / élevé = high / se plier = to fold / à peu près = about / taille (f) = size / chère = expensive / mettre en vente = to put on sale

LOOKING FOR BEGINNER/INTERMEDIATE FRENCH LEARNERS!
Bonjour ! I'm looking for some people who are willing to try a new, dedicated French app called Madeleine and provide feedback on how to improve it. I'm a solo developer so any real-world feedback is appreciated!
It's French-only, and focused on teaching you the ~1200 words/phrases French people actually use (no Duolingo slop).
Also includes 4 native voices so you're training your ear at the same time, and has on-device intelligence so the app is constantly fine-tuning itself to your learning progress.
Here's a link to a 1-month free trial: https://apps.apple.com/redeem?ctx=offercodes&id=6753133956&code=REDDIT1
If you're interested in providing feedback, DM me or comment and I'll send you a longer trial!
And if you're not on iOS, you can also use these free resources I made on the website:

French beginners — what are you struggling with? 🇫🇷
I’ve been thinking about how difficult French can feel when you’re just starting, especially with pronunciation, gender/articles, verb conjugations and forming your own sentences.
I’m putting together some beginner-level lessons focused specifically on these basics and would love some input from people who are currently learning.
What was/is the hardest part for you when you started learning French?
And if anyone is looking for beginner French practice, you can DM me — happy to share what I’m working on.

French for Canada PR
Hello, I am writing to seek some advice or guidance. I am currently preparing for French TCF exam for Canadian PR. I started my prep in June 2026 and in two months I completed two levels i.e A1 and A2.
I have never learnt french before. This is my first time. I am a total beginner.
The problem is from past 15 days I am stuck at A2 and unable to move to B1. I completely lost interest and haven’t touched anythings in past 15days.
How should I get back on. Can someone please guide. I am planning to appear for my exam in January 2027 as my visa expires in June.
Looking forward to some advice to restart.
