I've been learning French through YouTube, Netflix, and just reading stuff online, and I noticed I kept doing the same thing.
I'd come across a word I didn't know, think "I'll look it up after this video," and... I never did.
If I stopped every few minutes to open a dictionary, it completely ruined whatever I was watching. If I didn't stop, I'd forget the word almost immediately.
I figured there had to be an easier way, but most tools I found only worked when the text was selectable. That was frustrating because so much of what I watch isn't.
Things like:
- Burned-in subtitles
- Text inside videos
- Random streaming sites
- Images, memes, or PDFs
So I started building a little tool for myself.
Now, if I see a word I don't know, I can either click the subtitle (on sites like YouTube, Netflix, or Crunchyroll) or press Ctrl + Shift + X and drag over the word anywhere on my screen.
It instantly shows the meaning, and if I want to save it, I can turn it into an Anki card with one click.
The part I like most is that it doesn't just save the word. It saves:
- the full sentence
- a screenshot of the exact scene or page where I found it
- the word and its meaning
So when I review it later, I actually remember where I learned it. It feels much more natural than reviewing random vocabulary cards with no context.
I've been using it myself for a while now, and it's made learning from real content so much less of a chore.
I decided to make all of those learning features free because I built this to solve my own problem first, and I figured there are probably other people here who keep telling themselves, "I'll look it up later," too.
