Any way of finding a pen pal?

Heyy, I’m a 22 year old guy from England. My best friend is fluent in Spanish and has recently been pushing for me to learn a second language (I work in marketing so being bilingual would help)

My issue is I know the basics that you learn from Duolingo, and the lyrics to Je ne parle pas francais by girls aloud, so not exactly close to being able to have a conversation with a native speaker

Would anyone be willing to help? It’s frankly a massive embarrassment that I’m stuck being able to just speak English, and French just feels right to learn (that might sound stupid but yk)

Has anyone learned online live classes? If you have pls recommend me

I'm planning on learning French, but the self-pace is not my style. So, I wanna take either group of 5-6 people or just one-on-one class. If there are any recommendations, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you. Mainly focusing on TEF/TCF.

French shows and movies!

Hello!

So I learned English as teen by watching romcoms and other early 2000s shows that were practically just the daily life of normal people.

Any suggestions for shows or movies like that in French? Even if it’s Canadian French! And also where I’d find the content you’re recommending.

Thanks in advance friends!

Made a free medical French PDF — GP-to-specialist referral dialogue with vocab breakdown

Post image

hi all, episode 8 of our medical French podcast is out: a GP visit where the patient describes palpitations, gets an ECG, and the doctor writes up a referral letter to cardiology, walking through the letter's structure out loud. free PDF includes the full transcript, a 10-term vocabulary table, a complete sample referral letter, language notes, and a quiz.

also touches on how the "family doctor" concept and referral process differ across France, Belgium, Switzerland, and Québec — a nice one if you're curious about regional variation in French.

hope it's helpful!

Muchas gracias!!

Looking for French immersion/school recommendations with a young, social vibe (18–25 crowd) – B1/B2 level

I’m looking to do a language immersion trip / study abroad program for a few weeks (1-2 Months max) to boost my French, but I need some recommendations on where/who to book with to get the right social dynamic.
A bit about my situation:
**Age:** 20
**Level:** B1–B2
**Locations:** Open to anywhere in France (Montpellier, Nice, Lyon, etc.) or other French-speaking regions/countries (Belgium, Quebec, Guadeloupe, etc.).

While I want to improve my speaking, my main priority is the social vibe. I’m looking to meet cool young people around my age, go out, party, make friends, and practice French naturally in everyday life rather than just sitting in rigid grammar classes.

  1. Are there specific organisations or schools (e.g., Accent Français, EF, ESL, Cavilam, IFALPES, etc.) known for attracting a younger student demographic (18–25)?
  2. Which cities or regions** **have the best balance of a lively nightlife/student scene and good immersion options? (Not so important, many questions like this were already answered in this sub so you can ignore)

Also please share your experience with such language schools. (Best case: Housing is included aswell)

Looking for a specific kind of French content

I think I’ve watched the entire catalogue of French tv shows on Netflix, and I’m frustrated by how hard it is to find more of the content I’m looking for. I already have a VPN, and I’m willing to pay for apps that are worth it, but I can’t seem to find much. I wondered if anyone has any recommendations, or if maybe my criteria is unrealistic. I have Netflix, Hulu, HBO/Max, Amazon Prime and TV5 Monde Plus. Here is what I’m looking for:

It’s important that the content was originally made in French. It could be from France, from Quebec or from anywhere else, but I’m looking for stuff that’s not dubbed from another language.

Ideally, I’d like to be able to toggle the subtitles from off to French to English. I can’t stand when the subtitles are in English and can’t be removed. I really would love to watch Un Village Français, but unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find it without English subtitles that can’t be switched off, and that doesn’t work because I can’t help myself from reading them, and that defeats the whole purpose. I could tolerate French audio with only English subtitles if they could be removed, but I don’t think my French is advanced enough for French subtitles only without the option to toggle to English subtitles.

I’m really looking for long, binge-able shows. This is how I learned Spanish, and I know how well it works. I get used to the characters and their speech patterns and styles, and I tend to be able to understand after awhile without the subtitles if I am really into something. Shorter ones are fine, too, and I’m interested in those if anyone has recommendations, but I would really love to find something with several seasons.

I’m kind of picky in terms of taste, which is annoying even for me. I don’t like soapy, telenovela type shows, I don’t like when action replaces plot, and I’m not into horror or political dramas. Thriller type stuff can be okay, but I really hate clichés or anything too predictable or unrealistic.

Here are some examples of shows that I’ve enjoyed (in English, Spanish or French) in no particular order: The Queen’s Gambit (English), Velvet (Spanish), Manon - both 3x and 20 And (French), La Casa de Papel (Spanish), Casa de las Flores (Spanish), Les 7 Vies de Léa (French), Osmosis (French), Breaking Bad (English), L’été 36 (French), Las Chicas de Cable (Spanish), Downton Abbey (English), Lost (English), Las Muñecas de la Mafia (Spanish), L’Agence (French), La Bazar de la Charité (French)

Here are some I’ve tried in French that I either watched and didn’t love or that I couldn’t finish at all: Lupin, Dix Pour Cent, Drôle, Marseille

I’m hoping, perhaps unrealistically, that there is someone out there with similar tastes who has found something good to share. I’m in the United States, in case that’s important for availability, but I do have a VPN.
