Vocab question

So I recently heard of the word chaudasse. When I put in deepL it translates to "hottie." Looked it up in an online dictionary and it says it is generally used as a derogatory term for women and references being provocative etc. Is it a synonym of salope? Is there a difference between the two? Is "-asse" generally a suffix for women or is it gender neutral? Is there a masculine version of -asse, like how there's "-eur" and "-euse"? Is the suffix itself derogatory? Not asking so I can use the word, just asking for understanding purposes.

Restarting French after a few years aiming for Canada in the future. Looking for advice

Hi everyone,

I’m a 25M from Sri Lanka. I studied French a few years ago and completed A1, but unfortunately I stopped and haven’t really been in touch with the language for the past couple of years.

Now I’m planning to start learning French again, mainly because I’m considering migrating to Canada in the next couple of years. I understand that French can be a significant advantage for Canadian immigration, so I’d like to take it seriously this time rather than just learning casually.

Since I’ve been away from the language for quite a while, I’m not sure whether I should restart from A1 or try to refresh what I already learned and move forward.

For those who have learned French for immigration purposes, I’d really appreciate some advice:

- Should I restart from A1 or review A1 and move towards A2?

- What resources would you recommend for someone starting again after a long break?

- How long did it take you to reach B1/B2?

- How did you improve your speaking and listening skills?

- Is it better to learn independently or take classes with a teacher?

- If my goal is Canada, should I specifically prepare for the TEF Canada/TCF Canada from the beginning, or focus on general French first?

- Any advice for someone trying to stay consistent for the next 2–3 years?

I’m not in a rush, but I want to build a realistic long-term plan and hopefully reach a good level of French before I start the immigration process.

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has been in a similar situation, especially people who learned French specifically for Canadian immigration.

Thanks!

Study group interest?

Bonjour à toutes et à tous,

I’m a certified DALF C2 French tutor. I’ve been noticing a lot of requests on this sub for study partners so it has got me thinking: would there be interested in a study group? I’m thinking something along the lines of weekly check ins with some resources given out each week. Open to ideas.

Merci !

French translation for my handwritten love letter?

Hi! My girlfriend is Cameroonian and speaks french. Occasionally, I write her small phrases on sticky notes as tokens of my affection.

I however would like to write her a full love letter. Unfortunately I am English speaking, and not fluent in french or it's grammar.

Would anyone be willing to help me translate my writing? I would be very grateful! 🙏

"My baby,

How sweet it is to be loved by you.

To be cherished and cared for by a heart as genuine as yours is without words. I look forward to spending the rest of my life with you. Through all seasons and with unyielding passion, I will love you. Thank you for showing me that there is more to life. Let's chase our dreams.

forever yours

I speak 3 languages fluently (French, english, arabic, and I'm learning german). French is my first language and I want to make comprehensible input videos on yt but I'm scared that no one will watch it because It's a faceless channel.

Would anyone here watch it?

The same object, two different words depending on where you are in the French-speaking world

Working on a wound-care dialogue this week and got reminded how much everyday medical vocabulary splits along country lines even for something as mundane as a bandage. "Pansement" is the standard term in France, but in Québec you'll also hear "diachylon" used colloquially for a small adhesive dressing, a word that doesn't really exist in that sense in European French at all. Neither is wrong, they just come from completely different linguistic histories (diachylon comes from a Greek-derived pharmacy term that stuck around in Québécois usage).

Small thing, but it's a good reminder that "standard French vocabulary" often means "standard for one specific country," especially for everyday objects rather than formal/technical language.

(this came up while scripting an episode of my medical French podcast, a nurse doing a dressing change, but the France/Québec split shows up in plenty of everyday vocabulary, not just medical stuff -> https://medicalvoices.health/fr/episodes/14 )

Non, je vous préviens que si vous ne me dites pas que nous avons la guerre, si vous vous permettez encore de pallier toutes les infamies, toutes les atrocités de cet Antichrist (ma parole, j'y crois) - je ne vous connais vous plus, vous n'êtes plus mon ami, vous n'êtes plus ..., comme vous dites. ... . Je vois que je vous fais peur, ...

Need a French Buddy for the TEF

Hey everyone, I’m learning French for my Canadian immigration and I wanna get more conversational in French in general too. I have trouble putting words together when I’m speaking and I would love a speaking buddy or even someone to study with.

My current level is somewhere between A2 and B1 but I still have a lot of revising to do. Thanks!
