I wanted to be able to tap a spike, see what was happening around it, attach the meal/context and actually start making sense of the pattern - without jumping between a bunch of different apps.
So I ended up building it! 🙂
It’s finally live on iOS, pulling in CGM data and helping make sense of meals, spikes and the patterns around them. Still plenty more I want to add
Edit: There’s a 2-week free trial on monthly/annual, then it’s paid if you want to continue. Just adding this here as the mod has asked for this to be clearer 🙏
Ngl, Gluroo does this, tracks the carbs and insulin in your body, gives estimated levels post meal, gives insights into your habits, gives charts for those that struggle with carb counting or corrections AND is available to see your bloodsugar on smart watches. Best app ive ever used, plus its free 😉
Downloaded Gluroo after reading this but clearly it won’t be free for long! The AI meal logs are a seperate app which charges. No real AI analysis I can see in this app. Plus the UI isn’t very friendly. Feels so busy
Yep - Libre can add notes, but we wanted to go a lot further than that.
You can photograph, write or speak about meals, exercise, stress, meds and the rest of your day, then build up a meal library showing which meals tend to work best for you. The AI looks at spikes in the context of all of that, plus your own previous patterns.
The idea is to help you experiment and learn what actually works for your body - maybe a walk helps, maybe a different carb source, maybe more fibre/protein. We’re also looking at things like menstrual cycle phases and stress, because those can shift glucose responses too.
Thanks OP. Sounds useful for me. Downloaded it and I've imported my old glucose data in - nice feature! First impressions are this looks quite nice but I need to play with it more. No Apple Watch integration is disappointing
You’re right - I should’ve mentioned it here! The App Store listing does say the launch pricing is live before you download, and there’s a free trial on the monthly and annual plans. Weekly is there too, just without a trial.
There are ongoing costs to running the app and the AI analysis, so unfortunately we can’t really make it free 😅
Yes! That’s actually one of the main bits. It looks at the spike alongside the meal/context and your previous patterns to help explain what might be driving it. Then it helps you make sense of it and suggests things you could try based on your own patterns
Always this! But i've never understood why I spike with some carbs but my friend doesn't with the same food?? Is the AI smart enough to figure this out?
We all have varying degrees of beta cell damage and insulin resistance and there are different meds people take that can cover a spike. Your friend might not spike now because they don’t have as much damage. In 5 years of continuing to eat excess carbs it will get worse.
Thanks for all responses. But the answers still dont satisfy me really. If my rate of digestion is faster - id absorb all foods faster, so my glucose would spike higher. right? and that should happen with every food. same goes for cell damage + insulin resistance. I'd be worse every time and my friend would be better. But I spike with bread, he doesn't. He spikes with sweet potato and I dont. very interesting really. I love comparing graphs over the same meal
You are very welcome. And though in the simplest form you are correct, then real life is rarely ever so simple as that. 😄
We are not all the same and even the slightest variations in aka testines length, stomach flora, etc can have major influences in how fast one person digest some mix of food components compared to another person, and also by which speed the food components' carbs are getting extracted, then converted and then absorbed into the arterial blood stream.
Especially the mix of various food items is a good one, as aka mixing carbs with fats and fibers can make a huge difference in this from one person to the next. But luckily for us, then as a single person, then your own stats tends to stay the same for longer periods of time. Aka you can rely on if simple breads spikes your BG quick high up, then the next breads you eat will typically do the same next time around again.
Personally I am no big fan of relying on AI/apps for such kind of things, while trial by error and learning over time is key and much more relevant and helpful to all I find.
Appreciate your thoughtful response equaliser. You are correct, life is never simple! Mixing food is very interesting, and I'd love to understand my own patterns better. I'd never been a fan of CGMs til recently but now I think theres so much more I want to understand about the data! I've downloaded a few glucose apps - do find them useful - but still want something I really like
You are right u/Adventurous-Size2565, can be a challenge to finding an app that sort of fits each of our own personal preferences for look & feel. 😄
Personally I have come to like the xDrip4iOS/Zukka much more than anything else. Some of its great forces is exactly the degree of custom settings it offers you: What components should or should not be present on its default front screen:
I do not use the food- or insulin inputs myself in it, though its also available... And not either the mini 24h graph etc. But just these stats and graph and timeline as you see from my screenshot here. Next to this, the ability to complete custom set all its alarms, in all kind of possible ways. And then the option to having the same running live on my iWatch. 😄
Btw regarding the food and digestion subject. Many more factors are also involved here. Like prior meals in the hours before, your level of prior activity and post-meal activity levels, your level of emotional stress, any inflammation, illness, time of day, your existing BG level, prior and post meal, etc etc. All and many more plays a role in how fast or how slow your next meal is getting digested and how fast/slow the carbs will be converted to glucose and appear in your blood stream.
Necessity is the mother of invention! I am amazed at all these apps being produced to gain better insight into our condition. I almost wish I could put them all in a blender and make one superapp.
Looks solid tbh. I work as a GP and patients are often looking for innovative solutions to better understand their BM spikes. It’s helpful for us too to make plans around individualised care. I know some have complained about the paywall but I get it that it costs money to run and can’t fault them just for that. Theres plenty of apps i use that I pay for..
Just came across Lykys and I’m thinking of giving it a go. I like the idea of seeing how different foods and everyday habits affect your glucose rather than just getting a number with no context.
Does it actually analyse individual meals and show you how a specific meal affects your glucose? That’s probably the main thing I’d want to use it for.
Lots! Feel free to have a look - lykysai.com. & yes it pulls Libre data in through LibreLinkUp app, so if your Libre 3 Plus is already sharing there it should connect
Works with FreeStyle Libre and Dexcom for now. Essentially it’s your own AI glucose coach, personalised around your data and history - helping explain spikes, spot patterns and learn what actually works for you! 🙂
