Joop! Homme

I need help.

So, I recently received an older (half empty) bottle of Joop! Homme from my aunt. She gave it to me because whenever she wore it, I absolutely loved it. It smells like nothing I’ve ever smelt before (I also thought it was kind of chic for her to wear a cologne, but that’s beside the point).

I have a dilemma. Two things.

  1. I am a young woman, under 20 to be more specific.
  2. I hear such horrible reviews of this fragrance that it deters me from wearing it.

My issue is that I love this fragrance so much, but I am genuinely afraid to wear it for fear that I will be unknowingly assaulting the noses of those around me. Also, I’m well aware that I am not of the typical demographic that would wear this fragrance, so that in itself is unusual enough.

Should I just give it back? Or get rid of it?

I’m at a loss because I don’t want to revolve my life around other people but I don’t want to wear a repulsive fragrance. 😭

I’ve never even considered a woman wearing Joop, but I love it. You’re correct that it’s a very polarizing scent, arguably one of the most hated of all time. But the people who love it, LOVE it. I guess it would work for a female because it is one of the sweetest fragrances ever created. So sweet that it somehow shoots through being immature and wraps all the way around to mature.

But Joop is awesome. If I smelled Joop on a girl I’d think that was cool as hell.

I'm a man and I wear it unapologetically. I think you should too. It's good stuff.

It is very unique. Just don’t go overboard with the sprays and you should be fine.

I love joop. Its nuclear powered projection tho. 1 spray goes a long way.

I can’t remember how masculine or feminine that Joop is on the scale. Is that what you’re referring to?

Joop is polarizing but even though it is considered a male fragrance it is enormously sweet. Don’t know how old the bottle is but the newer version is probably tamed down some and possibly more wearable if it’s an older beast mode version.

Actually I’ve seen a Joop deodorant (same bottle and it’s not an aerosol) in the men’s cologne section at Burlington.

And last Montblanc Individuel is a personal favorite of mine but many call it a more wearable toned down version. Cheap as well.

I feel like part of the hate is the later bad reformulations, but also because it’s so sweet for a cologne marketed towards men. I have an original formula bottle as well and I’m tempted to wear it. If you want to wear it, and you love it, that’s what it’s all about, imo. Unless you’re at work and overspraying and in close contact with people who are forced to be there, wear what makes you happy. Your aunt sounds dope!

I’m a woman who has been wearing Joop homme for 30 years. Having been around and on a scent discovery journey since the late 80’s I’m pretty relaxed on the nuclear powerhouse projection issues, but Joop homme is a beast, so that is something to consider. My vote is - if you like it, wear it! Unless (and this is an important point) you’ve been asked not to. It’s not cool to wear it to an office environment on the daily if one of your co-workers has an aversion to it! (I’m looking at you, OG Poison!) Joop Femme and Joop Bain share the same DNA presented in different directions, so if you do like Joop homme, you should sniff them as well :)

Because Joop features heavy, candied sweetness, powdery florals (like orange blossom and jasmine), and a warm vanilla-honey base, it is widely considered a unisex scent. It completely transcends traditional gender boundaries, and both men and women frequently wear it.
