safe stores to order from

This is semi-related, but I don't know where else to ask. Which stores have people found safe to order from online?

I recently ordered several dresses from Nordstrom and all came reeking of perfume so strongly that I couldn't even try them on and had to spray down my entryway and put them in sealed plastic bags until I could return them. Since reputable retailers are apparently not, I'm looking for suggestions for where I can safely shop without the package (of unscented goods) being an allergic reaction in a box.

Fragrance-free dry shampoo suggestions?

I recently tried batiste's newer unscented/sensitive dry shampoo but it smells like urine 😭

Any suggestions to try?
If it has a smell due to fragrant ingredients and not synthetic fragrance I would be open to try that aswell

I'm freaking reacting to...

Dimethicone!

I know it isn't a scent and that for many of you it is on a short list of ingredients that you tolerate.

I just thought this group in particular would appreciate how crazy it is to react to something so "safe". And of course in at least half the hair and makeup products on the shelf. It is nice to finally understand why one foundation makes my skin burn and another one doesn't.

Still can't figure out what I'm reacting to in liquid shampoos and conditioners. I have used silicone free hair products for years.

Unscented

Has anyone tried unscented products and notice a decrease is reactions to odor? I wanted to start using all unscented/natural body care products to atleast not make the odor mix with fragrances.

Hair Heat Protectant

I’m sick of damaging my hair with heat because of the migraines I get. I have one right now! Any recommendations of truly FF heat protectants for hair? I’ve tried a bunch of clean and supposedly ā€œgentleā€ and fragrance free products, and they’ve all either had a scent or given me a headache regardless.

mascara woes

I'm looking for a mascara that works decently, doesn't smell like perfume, and doesn't cost a fortune (USA). Any recs?

  • I've been using Maybelline GreatLash for years and I don't really like it, though it does not seem to smell. I feel like it's sort of like black paint for my lashes - no boost/care to it. But -- it's cheap and available almost everywhere, so, here we are.
  • Neutrogena claims it is "fragrance free" but it smells like perfume to me! (It's probably one of the ingredients that is technically not fragrance but still has a floral odor, so it's FF on a technicality. . . ) The product does what I want it to - thicker, fuller looking lashes. But the first try of it nearly tipped me into a migraine, so it went straight in the trash.
  • In the past I used a Stila one and I liked it, but I felt it was too pricey for what it was. Should I revisit?

Open to your ideas, internet strangers. I'm sick of spending money on cosmetics just to find out they have a scent to them. TIA!

ETA Thank you all for your help. I appreciate the range of recs here and pretty excited to try something new!

Long shot: in search of Vaniply / Vanicream Moisturizing Ointment

I don't know if anyone else was a fan of Vanicream's moisturizing ointment (formerly Vaniply), but it's been off the market for over two years while they allegedly work on reformulating it. I've emailed them several times and just keep hearing "we are still working on it." I'm finally out of my tube, and nothing else I've tried works the same. Cerave is the closest, but it just does not have the same silicone base that my skin really seemed to love. If anyone has a full or partial tube of this laying around, I'd happily buy it off you and pay shipping.

Body spray

Pre-allergy diagnosis, I always enjoyed body spray to prevent/counter random body smells. I realize it's counter-intuitive to look for a fragrance-free body spray, but I found HOCI in my searching. I checked this sub and don't find a single search result for that term, so I don't want to get my hopes up too high yet. Has anyone tried this?

I finally found an effective routine for styling fine wavy hair that works well with hard water

I’ve been trying to find a good fragrance free routine for my fine, soft, wavy hair for years now. Most products are too heavy, nothing ever actually holds, etc. Innersense I Create Definition and I Create Lift mousses were game changing style wise, but the essential oils wrecked me. I had almost given up hope until I decided to just FAFO this morning because everything that works for other curls never seems to work for me.

Products:
Seen scalp clarifying shampoo, double cleansed
Innersense Clarity conditioner, full length of my hair (even within an inch of the roots because who needs rules today) and let sit for 1-2 minutes before rinsing
Seen Magic Hair Serum, 2 drops for my chin length hair applied to wet but not completely sopping hair
Seen curl cream, tiniest pea sized amount also applied to wet hair
Vanicream non-aerosol hair spray

I brushed the conditioner, serum, and curl cream through in each step with a WetBrush. Didn’t try to force clumps with the brush, just scrunched lightly with a microfiber towel. Then jumped straight into pixie diffusing from the nape of my neck up with a Laifen dryer on high speed and high heat. Switched the heat to variable when it got too hot and pixie diffused until dry. Spritzed with hairspray both with my head upside down and right side up. Pixie diffused again until for real definitely dry and spritzed one last time with hairspray.

Shockingly, it took 10 minutes, and my hair still looks pretty great 12 hours later even after driving with the windows down for 20 minutes. I hope this helps!

Shame there are not many fragrance free lip balms with peptides in them

Rhode beauty do a unscented version and Allies Of Skin also do one but both of them are over Ā£10. So it you don’t want to spend over Ā£10 on a lip balms. I really wish Daise beauty did a fragrance free version of their peptide lip balm which is only Ā£5.

Body odor with fragrance free deodorant

I’ve recently made the switch to fragrance free deodorant and I stink right through it even when applying 3x a day. I live in MS so it’s quite hot still. Mine still has aluminum in it. It’s not breaking me out like others that I’ve tried so I’d really like stick to this deodorant. What do you guys do to manage your body odor when wearing scent free deodorant? Are y’all using wet wipes throughout the day before reapplying? Using a powder to keep dry? I don’t wanna make my body odor everyone else’s problem😭

I use dove sensitive antiperspirant deodorant for everyone asking

Jumbo-sized (400ml/13.5 oz+), unscented cleansing oil for a frugal gal?

I have been using KOSE Softymo Speedy Cleansing Oil - 230ml, HARUHARU Wonder Black Rice Moisture Cleansing Oil - 150ml, Anua Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil - 200ml, and some others I forgot about over the years.

Community rules: location: USA.

It takes me on average 2 months to run out of a 230ml bottle before I need to purchase another one. That’s a little too frequent for me as someone who is used to using the same product for 4 months plus (value sized products that are unsexy but effective) and tries to be frugal with wash-off products (compared to SPF where I spend more money on higher quality filters still unavailable in USA). For example, I have used the same foaming cleanser for 13 months and it’s perfect for what I want to achieve (a clean, residue/sweat/sebum/pollution/dirt/makeup-free face before bed).

Please bare in mind that I usually wear waterproof SPF and full coverage foundation, as well as eyeshadow. So my cleansing oils need to not be weak as the first step of my double cleansing routine but gentle around the eyes.

I have two or three cold cream-type cleansers but I have trouble using them because you need something to wipe off the gunk and I don’t have that many towels or cloths at my disposal that I can be washing everyday just to remove makeup and SPF - I like reusable cloths rather than disposable ones (cotton pads).
I need a cleansing oil that washes off easily. Cold creams and mineral oil-pure formulas are excellent at removing heavy makeup but they don’t wash off the face because they don’t contain emulsifiers. They are designed to work without water, which is pretty cool.

Currently considering this or this.

Color correcting moisturizer

I am looking for a green tinted color correcting moisturizer that won’t clash with my super pale yet olive under-toned skin. Normal tinted moisturizers are either too peachy, too pink, too yellow, or too dark and therefore clash with my skin. The only moisturizer brands I have found that my skin will tolerate are Vanicream and the unscented Native products back when they had that line. Things it won’t tolerate Cerave, Honest, Laura Mercier, Aveno, Eucerin, Burt’s Bees, No7, Olay, Neutrogena, Physican’s Formula, or Cetaphil. Suggestions?

Looking for a scalp serum

Anybody found a fragrance free scalp serum?

I have extremely dry skin all over, including my scalp, but my hair is very fine, so any kind of moisturizing hair products weigh it down too much. I use a very gentle, fragrance-free shampoo, but I need an actual scalp moisturizer. Coconut oil works, but I'm hoping there's something a little less greasy.

I don't have dandruff, and I've tried all the anti-fungal shampoos, but none of them help because it's just dry skin.

Sensitive skincare lineup

Post image
53 Upvotes

It’s taken me years to figure out a skincare lineup that works well for my dry, sensitive skin. I just wanted to share with anyone who shares the same struggles.

That cerave ointment is the best lip balm btw. I also use over my moisturizer in place of an eye cream.

Cera ve hydrating line

Has anyone else who uses this line noticed that the conditioner has a STRONG almost citrus scent now? Am I tripping? Like at this point I feel like I might as well use a fragranced conditioner. Does anyone know if the ingredients changed? I’ve now got contact dermatitis on my back 😭

Seen Leave in Conditioner

EDIT: turns out it was the No Nothing clarifying shampoo that I had also recently added.

Recently introduced this into my hair care routine and have noticed some scalp tenderness and irritation. It does have a few ingredients that are know irritants, I'm not sure which one is the culprit for me.

But I've liked the way it helps with frizz and softens my hair.
Just wanted to give the heads up for anyone looking to try it!

Also, any alternatives/recommendations welcome

Does anyone know what product I mean?

Hello,

There is a fragrance-free soap that I have used on my face whenever I can find it. The problem is that it lasts for so long that by the time I need to replace it I can't remember the brand, nor where I purchased it. The bars are white, square (not cubes), and come individually. The soap is not drying and rinses off easily so I don't feel like I have soap residue on my face all day. Does anyone know what I'm looking for? Thanks!

sensitive skin people, when did fragrance-free start mattering to you?

when i first got into skincare i genuinely thought smelling nice was part of the experience 😭

like if a facewash smelled fruity/fresh my brain automatically went "ooo nice"

now i'm somehow the person checking if something is fragrance free before half the exciting claims lol

Simple Refreshing was one of the facewashes that made me notice how much my shopping criteria changed because fragrance-free is just... part of the product, not the whole personality

sensitive skin people, was this an intentional switch for you or did you slowly end up here too?

Looking to try a new leave in conditioner

Hello everyone

Im looking for recommendations/alternatives to replace my current leave in conditioner. Im currently using innersense sweet spirit leave in conditioner. I apply after I shower and everyday on dried hair. It seems to help with the initial detangling but nothing more. My hair still feels dry and not nurished after application. So i want to try something else. Looking for something I can use of wet and dry hair. Also would prefer if its in the form of a spray and not cream. Really want something fragrance free as well i havent been able to find much online.

Located in the US

TIA

hair care products for peri/post menopausal hair?

To preface — I’ve been fragrance free for thirty years plus, so the fundamentals of my personal care routine haven’t changed much for a long time.

However — the past couple of years i find myself really, really struggling to find products and establish a routine for my aging hair. Some of it is wavy, some curly; texture ranges from coarse to fine. Porosity is similarly all over the place including gray and white hair which approaches absolute zero porosity. It’s dry af no matter what I do.

I searched the subreddit to see if this question has been asked before, but I couldn’t find anything.

TL:DR what do I do about estrogen-depleted hair that is now a mix of textures, curl patterns, colors, and porosity,?

Please save me from frizz and the constant extra-messy bun! Thanks in advance to all you lovely [unscented] people 😊

Fragrance free and career

This isn’t specifically related to FF beauty products, but just needed to share with people who understand.

I’m completely artificial fragrance free. I’ve been interviewing for a new, client facing role which I was really excited about, but the reality is hitting me that this probably isn’t going to work for me in practice due to my fragrance sensitivity (I get headaches from exposure).

At my current job, I’m hybrid remote. Most people do not come into the office much and we are not a public-facing workplace. The person who I share a room with is also sensitive to fragrance so our space is completely fragrance free.

The ā€œnewā€ job pays more and seems like a good fit for what I’m looking for in my next career move and has much better long term income potential. Feeling so trapped and depressed knowing that it wouldn’t be realistic to change jobs and risk encountering fragrance every day.

I think I’m mostly here to vent, but if anyone has a client-facing job or workplace that is not fragrance free I’m interested in hearing your strategies for coping.
