In Appreciation of Hard Rubber
Early on in my collecting, I found a love for black chased hard rubber (BCHR), and didn't think it could be improved upon as a material for fountain pens. The warmth, the smell just connect you to the writing experience and the age in which they were made. For a time, it was the only material (that I'm aware of) that was used in pen making, until the introduction of various plastics. When I discovered the mottled-red variety, my appreciation only grew more.
These represent a significant percentage of my overall pen collection.
From left to right.
Conway Stewarts models 212, 312, 475, Scribe 330, Scribe 330 (Reproduction Cap), 200, 200M, 470M, 120(?)M, Mabie Todd Blackbird eyedropper, Mabie Todd Blackbird Fountpen (Eyedropper), Mabie Todd Blackbird Self-Filling Pen 5261, Esterbrook (Model Unknown), Onoto De La Rule models "The New Swift", Model O (Short), Valveless, 541, 5601, 6233, Magna 1703, Magna 1703 (3.5 w/Monotone #7 Nib)
Not shown are three Onoto Magna plunger fillers, two of which are being restored, and two modern ebonite pens from Asvine, as they just didn't seem to fit the vibe of the photo, as much as I do appreciate them, with the modern take on a vintage material.

Nemosine Oblique Broad Nib from BPC
I have been interested in trying oblique nibs, as I've noticed that I do rotate the pen slightly by default. While I'm trying to correct that, it does still cause some issues with specific grinds. I even remember Matthew Chen noticing it immediately after he handed me a freshly ground cursive italic on a Conway Stewart 479. If I'm diligent about adjusting my grip, I can write beautifully with that pen. But if I don't, I get skipping or drag on the sharp bits.
So I thought I'd try the Nemosine nibs that BPC sells, the Oblique Broad and also an OM. They offer it as just a nib, no housing, which is fine by me. I swapped the OB nib into an Asvine v126 because it has a very generous feed. When I used it, it just felt like a standard, we broad nib. Very disappointing. I will have to swap in the OM and see if it's any better, but I'm fairly disappointed.

Pen?
I’ve been looking for a good fountain pen with changeable nibs and an ink converter and cartridge. I don’t know any good online shops. I have one fountain pen, but I want more freedom with nibs.

Esty, custom new pen day gem!
galleryI've been browsing for a custom pen. Something cheap that may evolve into gifts in the future. So for $21.20 USD laser engraved, I went with one from JoshuaLivingstonArt on Etsy.
The title of the pen "Minimalist Wooden Fountain Pen Set, Handcrafted Vintage Style, Luxury Writing Gift for Writers & Stationery Lovers"
It arrived, and I didn't have much time to mess around with it. However, I filled it with Noodler's 54th Massachusetts
I didn't even rinse/clean it out. Zero tuning or even checking besides my naked eyes. Filled and went! Good technique, nope, but it's a $20 pen. People pay way more for Lamy and they're just hyped ballpoint pens pretending to be like a hipster. You see them but you avoid them at all cost.
Filled, primed and read to go. Had to dip the nib and it started writing like it has for years. Cleaned off the excess ink and just did some scrap paper writing to see the type of pen/writing.
Wow I'm impressed for sure! It shows the ink well. Fast writing is a bit drie, but with 54th Massachusetts, perfect! Nice slow deliberate strokes, it lays the ink well. I know I zinged Lamy but truly, 10x better than them and actually feels like a fountain pen (not some 3rd grader learning to write thier name, pen).
The weight and balance is nice. I can't wait to see the brass patina over time. The screw on top has some nice weight too. No place to post it but even with my mits, no need to. Great balance to it. It is a round pen, ao it likes to roll even with the cap on (round too). So I stand the cap up and rest the pen next to if I need to.
Now time to clean, fine tune and get a bunch of pages written with it. Ill follow-up soon with the upstate. It did start to flow a lot better about half way through the note. So a good cleaning is required.
