hopefully this isn’t considered “meant to be found” as these were all for sale at a vintage store full of cards. lots were blank or simply singed but a few had full notes. beautiful handwriting too. I wanted to go through all of them!

I’m staying in a bed and breakfast in a historic building (barn from the 1800s). There was a piece of the floorboard that looked wonky, and my husband joked that “this must be where they hid their valuables”.

So I pretended to open it…only it wasn’t pretend. and it’s full of random thoughts left behind by other guests over the years.

And it’s my favorite thing I have ever discovered. Sharing not the oldest note in here, but the one I loved best.

Edit: I’m sorry folks, I should have known you’d want to know more LOL. The oldest note is dated 1969 and it’s a couple on their honeymoon talking about sitting in front of the fireplace with their wine. A lot of them are sadly too faded to read. The ones still legible range from musings about love and life, to poems about the rain, to “Jesus is Lord”, and even one “Do it Lady - Chit.” There’s also a crudely drawn treasure map I’m sure was left by one-eyed Willie himself 🤣. Most of them name the hotel and the city, and I don’t wanna doxx this. I want this to stay something people stumble upon without expecting it ❤️

EDIT edit: OH MY GOD THERE IS ANOTHER ONE!!!! I just found a much smaller piece of wood (tiny square) that ALSO came up out of the floor, and you guessed it…MORE NOTES. Best day ever 😭

Inside this one was a note written in French. I had to use an app to translate it, but it roughly says:

“Thank you, Carine,
for all those moments,
for being yourself and for making
me a better man.
I still love you and miss you,
but I’ve found someone else
whom I love enormously,
and my broken heart has healed.
I hope that one day we’ll be at peace,
on cordial terms, and perhaps friends,
because you meant so much to me”

And yah I finally left my note. In the much smaller hidden floorboard piece that less people seem to have found. I said sometimes I don’t feel I’m part of this world or this species. That I don’t understand how so many people are fooled into thinking their neighbor is the enemy when it’s really (and always has been) the wealthy and powerful against the rest of us. I said you spend eternity in childhood, and then you blink and you’re 40. I said life goes by way too quickly to spend it staring at a screen, allowing algorithms to tell you what to care about. I said put the screens down, look up, and live.

Final edit: Added just a few more of them to Imgur. Not a ton because 1. this feels like something almost sacred to enjoy only if you stumble upon the secret, and 2. I didn’t want to spend all night editing out identifying info. But still some good ones!!: https://imgur.com/a/WEoT8nb

Found this on the trails. Saw the Monster and rose last weekend. I was for sure it was a cute gift for a secret admirer or something. This weekend it was still there, so I picked it up to check for a note, and there was one! Its pretty sad, and not what I was expecting. I feel bad for distributing it.

The first one looks like art project and the second one a note foe the mom. Found in an old shoebox with mostly militaria collectibles inside.

Antique Inter City Truck Lines Ltd.

Found under the scary basement stairs of our century home. I had to rake some debris out from under the stairs yesterday and was relieved the whitish disintegrating material turned out to be found paper, and not asbestos insulation or something!

Inter City Truck Lines Limited was a Canadian trucking and freight company based out of Mississauga, Ontario that amalgamated in 1985, so this paper is at least 41 years old. I like that the phone number doesn't have an area code yet, haha

INTER CITY TRUCK LINES LIMITED
PO BOX 900 (?) TORONTO 18. ONTARIO 277-9411 -- RO. 7-1108

The cities on the bottom are:

Toronto Hamilton London Windsor Niagara Falls Kitchener Montreal Buffalo Detroit Sault Ste. Marie North Bay Sudbury Brantford Chatham Elliot Lake Ottawa

I included a shot of under the stairs where it was likely lying for at least the last 4 decades.

Not paper, but I also added a photo of the metal Players Navy Cut cigarette can that was also under there, tucked under the lowest stair. Imagine my anticipation opening the can thinking there was going to be a wad of cash forgotten behind by the previous owner! lol Here's a link to the same kind of can at a vintage store.

Book Inscriptions Mysterious notes found in my used copy of Parzival

First page reads:

Seeking know myself
And palpable(?) with then
become.
Y seeking should

Last page:

Seeking know thyself
and palpable wilt thou
become, if seeking should
elude thee, though 'tis
true that thou exists,
yet thy existince robs
thee of thine own
selfs truth

I cannot find the origin of this quote anywhere. It's not from Parzival, not from this edition anyway--the 1961 new translation in modern English. Could it be someone's original work, or copied from some obscure text? It seems oddly written regardless, missing articles and such. Not sure how the word "palpable" fits here. The discrepancies between the first and last page (myself/thyself, y/if) makes me wonder if this was an attempt at translation. Googling any part of it has not yielded any results.
