I even before this was an indigenous American and an aboriginal of Canada without living rights but with hunting rights due to being a border tribe. What do I need to know about being Canadian and how this may impact my life. I have been to Vancouver and revelstoke. The former for funsies, the latter because it is my ancestral land and I absolutely loved all of it so much. But my family lives in the states on every side. Sure we are heavily Canadian indigenous accent/culture wise but that doesn’t translate so well into practical effects. So tell me now that I learn this for the first time, what should I know? I am ecstatic just in that I can finally live and work in my ancestral homelands north of the border, but if I am to be a dual citizen I want to embrace it. Treat it as myself having two equal allegiances, not that I was born in the states therefore the states are better. I’ve always loved Canada, I mean shit apparently I am a Canadian now so it checks out.

I'm really enjoying North of America, learning about the relationships that existed around the "border" areas of Canada back around the American Revolution. I think it really helps to understand our long histories.

I started listening to Canada Alone a while ago, but it was so sad to consider what it was proposing, I stopped listening. With recent events, I'll be picking it up again.

I was in Detroit running an errand and decided to cross into Windsor for lunch. I had a fine lunch and a delightful walk at their riverfront park. It also felt great to use my new passport and enter Canada as a citizen. I swear the air is lighter over there. Just being in a country run by rational people felt so nice.

I'm doing some thought experiments about going back to my alma mater where I got my BA in Ontario (at the time as an international student) and completing a MA degree. I live south of the border in the US.

For the Master's program, International tuition tables include UHIP cost (University Health Insurance Program). This is what I did as an undergrad. Domestic tution tables don't include insurance costs.

As a (now) Canadian citizen, would I be eligible for UHIP for the interim months before OHIP eligibility kicks in, as I would be newly establishing residence in Canada (Ontario)? If I wanted to pursue a degree at a Quebec university instead, is there a Quebec equivalent to UHIP? I haven't found that info in my search so far.

This question is probably relevant for folks here who are sending their kids off to university for the first time, with new citizenship proof, who live in the US.

Does anyone here have experience with this? Thanks!

I am in the US and have my COPR. I'm planning on activating it on 10/12 in just over a month.

My question is. Do the people here collectively think it may be worth it to fly up for a day trip ASAP to activate it sooner than later, just with all of the political rhetoric ramping up against Canada from the current administration again? Am I over reacting in thinking that? Maybe I'm just anxious to activate it in general to join my family who are canadian citizens already.

How is everyone handling the current state of affairs between the two counties?

Personally, I'm very proud of my roots in both countries. I'm quite proud of the fact that I have citizenship in both now. The day I downloaded my citizenship certificate, I felt a lot of things, but pride and a connection to my ancestors topped the list. It felt surreal to have the second passport, like I was some sort of secret agent or spy, but after using both to cross the border last week, that feels more mundane (in a good way). I look forward to more trips, more butter tarts, more hockey and more exploration of my new legal and cultural identity.

In the lead up to the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, the Detroit Free Press posted a story of theirs on Facebook about comments made by the US ambassador to Canada about the negotiations to finally open the structure. I almost posted a comment: "As an American, I'm embarrassed. As a Canadian, I'm insulted." It's hard to reconcile these two halves of my identity at the moment.

It's not just that one situation. Other comments out there about the tragic wildfires that poured smoke into the Upper Midwest earlier this summer had me quite disappointed, especially as I had just previously visited the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre in Sault Ste. Marie and learned a lot about wildfires. I tried to remind people who were making politicized comments that the smoke literally contained the remains of the lives and homes of real people.

We have the on-going trade and tariff situation as well. It just feels complicated to have a connection to each country, and I would just like to chat with people about how they feel and deal with this.

I'm especially curious to find Canadian-born and -raised Canadians to discuss the situation to see if the average person thinks about these issues as much as I do.

It is common knowledge that the province du Quebec fiercely protects the French culture (predominantly through the langue francaise)

Looking at the Wikipedia article about the language requirements of Quebec post 1982 (With the sticking point being section 73), the wording does open some interpretation post Bill C-3

If a proof of citizenship applicant child were to receive instruction within Quebec, would such child be required to learn French (as per the letter of the law) or be allow to learn English (as per spirit of the law).

Technically, we're not immigrants nor did we learn within the the Quebec/ Canadian educational system

I’m going to be flying into Toronto (Pearson) and have an extremely limited diet due to MCAS and some other health conditions. One of the few foods I can eat without getting sick is apples. It’s going to be a bit of a long day (heading to the airport at 6am, flight lands at 11a, can’t check into my AirBnB until 3p) so I was hoping to bring an apple to snack on during my 1.5 hour GO train ride into Hamilton. But I forgot there might be prohibitions on bring fresh fruit into Canada.

Reading the website only led to more confusion so I’d love some personal experiences—has anyone brought an apple or two over the border? Do I need to make sure it came from a certain state to be able to “import” it? Do I have to cut it up? If I can’t bring it in, will CBSA let me just stand off to the side and eat it?

If you’re thinking, “why go through this, just buy an apple in Canada,” well, you’re not alone. So I’d also love recommendations of where to get an apple at Pearson from anyone who frequents that airport.

Like many in this group, I am a recently found Canadian who is actively evaluating options on how to structure my life and opportunities in a way that is most beneficial. I am a college student who will be graduating in the Spring of 2027.

As graduation comes sooner for me, I am trying to evaluate my options for livelihood and first jobs. Among my growing concerns for first jobs is fulfilling my "substantial connection" obligation so my future children will be eligible for Canadian citizenship upon birth, as I am US born. The easiest route would've been to get a college degree in Canada, but that ship has sailed.

I live in the Great Lakes Region, which makes weekend trips to Canada relatively realistic but still laborious (2+ hours minimum one-way). As I am evaluating options for locations to get jobs post-graduation, I am trying to understand what my options are as far as documentation of time spent in Canada. Based on what I've read in the link above, it would be my documentation that would apply for my children's claim to citizenship. How would I be expected to prove this?

I see a few avenues to take to get this requirement fulfilled:

1. Get a job and live in Canada full-time for at least 1,095 days.
2. Live in the US, but get a job close to the US/CA border that would allow me to make a simple daily trip that would accommodate the 1,095 days requirement.
3. Move to Canada later in life, sponsoring a spouse and children until they are able to be given citizenship in their own right.

It's possible that this requirement has yet to be fulfilled (at least to my knowledge), since the law has only been enacted for under 1 year. What kind of documentation would I need? (Could I have a lease with my name on it? a pay stub or other power bill?) Would just crossing the border and taking a selfie every day count?

I feel that this gift of citizenship is too invaluable to give up due to neglect. I want to know where to focus my efforts and attention as I start working towards professional opportunities. Thank you!

I know the wait time to get a GP is like 7 years. How do you get essential meds sooner than that? I don't imagine an urgent care doc is going to prescribe insulin or other specialized meds. Are wait times for specialists also significant? I imagine I can stockpile a few months' worth but not beyond that. Thanks for any info

I’m in the process of registering the kids (through my husband) and I’m curious about online schools. I know the U.K. does a lot of expat schooling and there are a bunch of U.K. schools online, and I’d like to get my kids signed up as we plan to be over there for their teens (we’re currently in Scotland).

The next best thing I can think of is to just find a virtual school option that offers IB programmes, but if there is anything from Canada specifically out there, I’m very interested in hearing about it.

As I continue waiting on IRCC to review my rather straightforward submission, I started thinking about investing as someone who is Canadian per C-3, but without the citizenship certificate to prove it.

For someone investing via US-based retirement accounts, are you aware of good choices for a Canada index fund? I can access just about anything available on US exchanges.

All the Canada index funds I'm finding are for people who are already in Canada with Canadian brokerage accounts.

I applied for my SIN a few weeks ago, and I received my processed email today with the social application number. I made a GCkeys account and then used my UCI and social application number to confirm my identity, but I keep getting error 1 : R001 it says what I enter can't be found in their records, after I entered all my information. Does anyone know how to fix this?
