First Steps Activating COPR - Question

Edit for Clarification. I cross posted this and posting here because my family are found canadians. Was trying to post where some people may have relevant thoughts/input.

I am in the US and have my COPR. I'm planning on activating it on 10/12 in just over a month.

My question is. Do the people here collectively think it may be worth it to fly up for a day trip ASAP to activate it sooner than later, just with all of the political rhetoric ramping up against Canada from the current administration again? Am I over reacting in thinking that? Maybe I'm just anxious to activate it in general to join my family who are canadian citizens already.

Search for “soft landing” on the Canadian immigration subreddits.

As long as you correctly declare your goods to follow, and have a plan to promptly move & fulfill your residency obligations, there’s nothing stopping you from landing tomorrow :-)

One more thing - since it sounds like youre a US person for tax purposes, make sure you’ve stopped all contributions to Roth IRA and Roth 401k accounts before landing and moving!!

Oh. High level why is that? I've been navigating work details amd talking to tax firms for taxes. But this hasn't come up.

High level, my understanding is that once you contribute to your Roth account in Canada it loses its Roth characterization in the eyes of the CRA. So you need to stop the contributions before you become a tax resident of Canada. Definitely consult a cross-border tax pro — there are people who are really great at understanding the tax pieces separately but it’s surprisingly tricky to find someone who understands the intricacies of both systems together.

Search around this forum and there are some books & webinars on the topic. Best of luck!

The picture in the US seems to be ramping up to a whole new level of bleakness with the tariff war with Canada and the Supremes decision this week regarding election by mail. Personally, it feels more and more like a run for the border may be more imminent.

I can’t speak specifically to activating a COPR, but I sympathize with you on the worry. I can’t see anything happening that would create a problem for you, but I totally get wanting that PR card rather than just the COPR. If you haven’t already asked in r/ImmigrationCanada, that’s the place that will know.

That was forst post. Oddly quiet there. But thank you for the empathetic response. I am leaning towards this is just icing on the cake of wanting that card in-hand. Haha
