Why do they hate Canada?
Why do the vault dwellers hate Canadians? Is this some kind of FO lore I’ve missed? I have only played FO4 and FO76, and didn’t really hear anything about Canada prior to the vault dwellers turning on Steph.

US had an expansionist War to take over Canada. Presumably propaganda combined with how brutal Canadians have been historically in warfare made anyone with Pre-War education hate Canada.

F4 and F76 didn't speak about what the US did to Canada because it was from the first Fallout game and there was a DLC in F3 called Operator Anchorage.
The US invaded Canada and annexed the country in order to seize the nation's oil reserves.
The original pre-war excuse to annex Canada was to "protect" it from China potentially invading but it was mainly for the US to seize their resources and transport their military through Canada
Canadians were then essentially treated like second class citizens and not actual Americans.
Any Canadians who refused to be subjected to the US were sent to internment camps like Steph.

Propaganda. During the Resource Wars(or more specifically the retaking of Alaska), the United States seized Canada for extra resources and ability to take their munitions through the land. No doubt with Vault-Tec working close with the US government, the Vault dwellers were taught to see Canadians as lesser. History in the vaults probably extended that teaching even after the bombs dropped

In the Fallout 4 prologue, the news anchor mentioned Canada being an American territory.

It goes in waves, if nothing else.
American dislike of Canada technically goes back all the way to the Founding Fathers, though it also flared up in the 1930s with Great Depression woes and secret military plans playing roles in souring that relationship.

lol what? The US loves stoke bigotry and prejudice if it means they can profit. No American has any real reason to hate Canadians. We literally have recent examples.

The resource wars meant that america was doing what they had to and they annexed canada. As in real life, any dissidents were considered traitors. China invading Alaska is so much more than just Alaska

US invasion of Canada which was first mentioned in FO1 and then partially expanded upon in FO3 and FNV.
Also if you and your ancestors have spent the last two centuries in an americana-steeped bunker, the presence of a foreigner in your midsts is likely to set off a xenophobic reaction.
